Bend Bird’s Nest: A Solar powered Mid Century Modern Green Vacation Rental

Located in the heart of Bend, this home is located within walking distance to historic downtown, grocery stores, restaurants, breweries, 5 different city parks, the river trail, and two blocks from Century drive that takes you straight to Mount Bachelor. A short bike ride will get you to the Old Mill District and Les Schwab amphitheater which means if you are on vacation you may not even need to use your car. This pet friendly house is also right by two dog parks to keep any 4-legged family members happy.

Construction on this house began in 2007 with designs to gain LEED platinum certification. The program was never completed due to builder financing problems, but the house is perfect for those who want a Green place to stay. No VOC paints, finishes, and certified nontoxic products were used in building and maintaining the house. Natural wool carpets, cork bathroom floors, and an emphasis on wood, steel, natural fibers, and glass instead of plastics and synthetics make this the perfect place to stay for those who want a clean environment.

Completing the designers’ original plan the house has been outfitted with solar panels. Last summer more power was put onto the local grid than consumed. You can even look at the power meter and see how you are doing! Stay at the only vacation house in the neighborhood with solar panels.

The house was architecturally built with a Mid-Century Modern feel. We have maintained that feel with the décor, using clean and simple lines in the furnishings. But we also wanted to make sure every seat and every chair was comfortable to sit in. 9 foot ceilings and 8 foot solid doors thru the house give an open feeling. Whether you need to come to town for work or play, at the end of the day this house is designed to be a place to relax and rest.

Kitchen

The first floor is an open floor plan centered on the kitchen. With luxury appliances like a Subzero refrigerator you can cook in style and space with 53 sq feet of Madrone Butcher Block counters. Because the kitchen and living room blend together you can also watch the 52” Samsung LCD TV with DVR while you cook. Both TV’s in the house have DVR’s, so you can tape and watch any of your favorite shows. There is also a Weber Genesis gas BBQ in the fenced side yard for grilling. If you need last second grocery items Bend’s gourmet local store, Newport Market as well as an organic store are only a 1/2 block away.

Living Room

Plenty of seating in the living room at on one of the barstools along the kitchen counter, or the leather couch which is perfect for lounging, or a pair of 1950’s vintage chairs. Speakers, TV, wifi, parks modern gas fireplace, and a 9-foot shuffleboard table ensure you won’t be bored. If it’s a cold winter morning the soybean finished radiant heated concrete floors will keep your feet warm. In the summer the concrete works to keep the house cool. The large windows with screens let in light, fresh air, and a feeling of being connected with the outdoors. Blinds and curtains ensure you can also maintain your privacy.

Dining Room

The other side of the kitchen is the dining room. Set with a teak dining table and leather seats for 6 it’s easy to serve a family style dinner by taking advantage of the pass through the kitchen. If you have friends over, the table leafs extend out to seat up to ten, and there are additional chairs stored at the house. The dining table was seen on HGTV's Secrets From A Stylist as a great find! The dining room also has French doors opening into the private side yard and patio seating area so you can enjoy indoor/outdoor living.

Master Bedroom Suite

A hardwood floor staircase will lead you to the second floor with a separate Master Suite wing. The bedroom has a king size bed with Stearns and Foster mattress, bamboo headboard, two reading chairs, 32” Vizio LCD TV with DVR, and private deck for two.

The Master bathroom is designed to feel like a spa. With double vanities and a large mirror over Paperstone countertops any couple will have plenty of room to spread out. For those late night trips to the bathroom a motion sensor will turn on the soft glow of under counter mounted LED rope lights, giving you plenty of light to see without being forced wide awake. The Jacuzzi made soaking bathtub is great for relaxing after a fun day playing outside. The shower has a bench as well as Grohe rain showerhead to help fulfill the spa experience. As with all bathrooms in the house, a dual flush toilet insures minimum water wastage.

2nd and 3rd Bedroom

The other wing of the second floor has another full bath, laundry room, one bedroom with queen size bed as well as leather reading chair, and another bedroom with a full size bed.

What makes this house unique

Our property stands out as the most Green house on the market. While several other houses have the same design as our house, none have our solar panels. We are pet friendly because we have an Australian Shepherd who goes everywhere with us, so we now how great it is to take furry family members on vacation. The furniture in the house was picked because of comfort, we truly love each piece and hope you do to.

Nice property/location...house needs cleaning

The location was great. We liked the house a lot and found that the kitchen was well-equipped. However, the floors were disgustingly dirty. All of our white socks were black on the bottom within 30 min of arriving. You could feel the grime on your bare feet and there were tumble-weed sized dust bunnies under the sinks/furniture. Many level surfaces were covered in dust as well (lower rungs of chairs, light fixtures, etc.). The floors were especially disappointing because we had a baby that wanted to play/crawl on the floor. Glad we brought a blanket to spread out for him. Also, lights in the master shower were out.

We paid top dollar for this place so we felt as if it should have been moped once in a while.

The owner was always quick to respond to any questions & offered suggestions for restaurants, etc. Thw house was within walking distance of a grocery store & a few restaurants. It was only a 10 minute drive from downtown Bend where there was a variety of shops & restaurants. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time for exploring! We would definitely lease from this owner again!

Fabulous House with a Great Location!!

My family and I stayed here for 5 nights for our Spring Break, along with our mini Aussie. The location is great and close to downtown. There is a great grocery store almost right next door (a two minute walk). I think we made at least one trip there every day! There is also a few restaurants/coffee shops across the street, as well as another tiny organic grocery.

The house is really beautiful. We loved the mid-century modern look and all the big windows. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need to cook a meal. There are more than enough linens and towels, as well as dish soap, laundry soap, and paper products. They even provide Everyday Organics shampoo/conditioner/body wash! There are cork floors in the bedrooms/bathrooms that have radiant heat. That was a really awesome surprise and cool feature. There are beautiful stained concrete floors downstairs. My husband loved the mattress in the master bedroom.

Brian (the owner) is quick to respond to all correspondence and was great to deal with. We really enjoyed our stay here and can't wait to come again.

Great Winter Vacation

We spent 2 weeks in January at this property during epic snows. Loved this house! Great layout and the warm floors were wonderful. It was so cozy and warm even though it was cold and snowy outside. Our dog's favorite place was in front of the fireplace. We were able to walk to so many places-Devore's Deli, Nancy P's Bakery and the Newport Market were some of our favorites. Walking downtown to restaurants and activities was great. FYI-when it snows, the Pine Tavern serves $2 Irish Coffees! So many outdoor activities-we went skiing at Mt Bachelor (only 20 minutes away) and snowshoeing at Smith Rocks were highlights. Brian was so responsive to any questions we had. Can't say enough good things about this rental. We will be back!

Beautiful spacious place in great location

We stayed 3 nights for a ski vacation. The unit is as described - clean, modern, spacious, beautiful, and well stocked. Brian was great - made checking in smooth, came and shoveled snow, made sure we were comfortable. He was 100% reliable for us and an excellent communicator. The unit is literally across the street from Newport Market, a block and a half from great coffee, and only blocks from several great restaurants. Perfect Westside location. My only critique of the unit is lack of privacy unless the window blinds are drawn. The adjacent units are feet away. All the units have lots of huge windows, which is fantastic for light and ambiance. However, with the blinds up, you could see what the neighbors had on their dinner table.

We loved it!

The home was perfect for our friends and family over the Thanksgiving holiday. The location is perfect for getting out and walking with your dog, drinking coffee at Back Porch and we loved the convenience of Newport market being just steps from the home. Brian was wonderful to work with and wanted to make sure we had everything that we needed to have the perfect holiday. The home was very clean, and was well equipped. We loved the secure area just outside the front door where our puppy could be outside and yet be very safe. The shuffleboard was a real hit with everyone, and got much use.

It is such a pleasure to find such a clean pet friendly home in the perfect location. We hope to return!
