In finishing, furnishing, and maintaining our apartment 208, we started from a simple premise: what do we like about where we stay when we’re on holiday? Whether we’re doing a home exchange, staying in a reciprocal private club in another city, or in an apartment or condo booked through VRBO, we want a place that speaks to intimacy and individuality.

We don’t like cold, impersonal, one-size-fits-all experiences, where the bare minimum is what’s provided. We want to stay in places where our needs are important, where our time spent travelling to the destination and the cost of getting there is understood and appreciated. About Adam Leamy, Owner

We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O'Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less.

That philosophy guided our renovation and redecoration of our first Hale Kai O’Kihei apartment when we purchased it in 2008 (and sold in 2015). The same approach influenced the additions and touches we've added to this stunningly renovated unit #208, which we purchased in 2011.

We've added more “Maui” colour though a restfully exotic paint palette, thoughtful furnishings, finishings, and appliances, and additional locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork. We don’t like to pack too much when we come to Hale Kai O’Kihei, so we stock snorkels, fins, and masks, boogie boards and beach chairs right down to binoculars and tropical CDs for our guests and us to use.

We’re always learning more about what makes a stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei an outstanding experience for ourselves and our guests. Why Adam Leamy, Owner chose Kihei

We’ve been visiting HKOK since 1997, and bought our first apartment in 2008, selling it in 2015. This remarkable place, and the experience it offers, gets in your blood. Departures for us and our guests aren’t the end -- they’re just the start of planning for the next trip. And that’s the best way to finish a holiday -- making plans for the next one.

Each time we visit, HKOK delivers. Sometimes we’re doing errands and chores; other times, we’re true ‘guests’ ourselves, relishing the chance to do blissfully, decadently nothing. Just taking in the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of it all. And the great thing is that it’s all there, visible from the private lanai or for direct interaction by way of a few paces across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach.

In March 2011, on a beach walk from HKOK, past the oceanfront estates on Halama St. through Kalama Park, and over a coffee at Kihei Caffe, the decision was made to buy #208. Why? Because in a world of sometimes wearying change HKOK is a welcome, restorative constant. And therein lies the HKOK charm: Shopping and services are a block away and those farther afield run the gamut from Macy’s to Tiffany’s. For us, the real draw continues to be this simple delight: Once we get in the door of #208, and put our groceries away, we're set, and can experience much of what we want from Maui, even whale watching, from our own lanai or our own front yard and beach.

The lure of Maui’s beaches, restaurants and places to watch the world slowly go by remains. But 208, uniquely renovated, offers a wondrous Hawaiian experience, all day long -- one many of us dreamt of in childhood on ‘sick days’ in colder climes, when game-show hosts Bob Barker or Tom Kennedy whisked winners away to Hawaii, affording us all a Technicolor glimpse of this exotic paradise.

Sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared? Still a star-gazer's paradise, and an awesome way to end any day.

What makes this condo unique

We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand.

We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count.

We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air.

We love the midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei.

We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond.

We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow.

We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special.

And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.

Owner's Response: Mr. and Mrs. C, this is a lovely note to receive on your stay, and a very meaningful one to me. As others reading this might have discovered if they've read several of these notes -- and in more than one response -- a long, long time ago, I had a high school math teacher who had every reason to fail me, instead, passed me. Despite being a late bloomer on matters academic, I had plans, and I aimed to see them through. But that gesture of faith, or of pity, made the difference, and university followed, as did, in time, graduate school at USC, a career, and all manner of achievement, some big, some small. But all significant for the act of a teacher that made them possible. That patient high-school math teacher was Mr. C, and I've never forgotten his kindness. And since buying at HKOK, I've invited Mr. and Mrs. C. to visit every couple of years, as my guest. My sense is that, this time, the trip from Toronto was harder for you both -- that math class was in 1979, so none of us is getting any younger. Still, as long as you're able to safely make the trip, there's always room for you at HKOK208. Such is the enduring appreciation of a remarkably kind, and significant gesture from long ago. Adam

A Gem of a Spot!

Our nine night stay in the condo was very very pleasant. The condo offers very updated furnishings, it has everything you would need for a comfortable stay. The view from the lanai is spectacular, a great place to watch a sunset ,a great place to have coffee in the morning, a great place to sip a bottle of wine, a great place to watch humpback whales.

The surrounding area offers grocery stores, restaurants, churches, all the while remaining a quiet area . Our host could not have been more thorough in his communication and was easily reached, even during a missile threat!

We can easily recommend this is as a place you would like to stay at when you come to Maui, when we return to Maui we hope it will be available for ourselves.

Do yourself a favor, and consider this VRBO property when staying in South Maui.

Our second stay in Adam and Michelle’s condo at HKOK was even better than the first!

We were thoroughly thrilled with our stay at Adam and Michells condo this past Christmas. This was our second stay in their lovely condo and even though our first stay was perfect we loved a few specific things that made this stay even more special. From the local magazines on the table, the bottle of wine and pound of Kona coffee upon arrival to the new beach chairs and body boards we were surprised with such attention to detail and maintenance done on not only the condo itself but the bonus amenities as well. One thing we were thrilled with this time around was the amazing newly redone pool and patio just outside the lanai. They did a gorgeous job renovating this area and the pool was magnificent on the hot balmy evenings to cool off after a day of exploration. This place has such a perfect location in that it works as the ultimate home base and is an equal distance from all of the different areas of Maui so you really can explore a new direction on the island each day with a comparable drive to the previous day. This is also so close to much of Kiheis night life and really a short drive back from a night strolling down front street in Lahaina with a much better view of sunsets than the western part of the island. On our second to last night at the condo we took an evening stroll at sunset down to the left end of the beach our front and around the path to the adjoining beach and found three sea turtles that were 5 feet long cooling down on the sand as the sun began to set. Of our multiple trips to Maui we have had some of our most magical moments on the beach right out front of the condo and the neighboring beaches that are simply a short walk away. Truly a hidden gem on Maui. From unlocking the door at check in to locking up at check out we were delighted with everything that Adam and Michells condo had to offer and we would recommend this over all the other places we have stayed on Maui. This will always be our go to place when visiting. We hope that this helps anyone who is looking to rent this place make a decision they will be happy they made for years to come. This place truly makes us understand why they say Maui no ka ‘oi!

Owner's Response: What a lovely note! You’ve covered the landscape, and because of that, the part that really struck me was your reference to ‘exploration.’ I have to admit that for some time, we fell into a comfortable habit of arriving, and just settling in. Yes, lots of chores, always, so we love that when they’re done — or when we need a break in the middle to recharge — we just hit the lanai, or walk across the lawn, and take in the sound and sight of the waves on the beach, the palm trees rustling, the whales breaching, and that gorgeous horizon. But a gift to us of Hawaii Magazine with its features on out-of-the-way places, and new or long-standing local eateries off the beaten track urged us farther afield, and we’ve found that with each trip, we’re once again ‘discovering’ Maui, as if for the first time. As you point out, there’s usually current and recent copies of Hawaii Magazine on the coffee table and, as some reading this will know, we’ve started providing one-year subscriptions to all our guests so that they might be similarly assisted in the vacation planning. In fact, we were there ten days ago for a very short trip, and saw that several copies of Hawaii Magazine had guests’ mailing labels on them! I think that when guests are bringing their copies from home with them to use as a resource while staying at Hale Kai O’Kihei, the idea of ‘exploration’ is alive and well! Again, a lovely note, and thank you so much for sharing with us all the thrills and rewards of exploring Maui, and making clear how Hale Kai O’Kihei meets satisfies the urge to explore, and the simple delight of seeing and enjoying what’s offered right off the lanai, and across the lawn. Terrific Maui getaway on the beach

We had a wonderful vacation on Maui in this beachfront condo. The beach - with beautiful views of Molokini and a couple of other islands - was a couple hundred feet away. We enjoyed watching whales out in the ocean with binoculars thoughtfully provided by the owner.

The owner of the condo was very helpful and responsive to suggestions. There were thoughtful touches throughout: snorkel gear; beach chairs/mats/umbrella; boogie boards; even drink holders to use at the beach!

The location was perfect for us: within a five-minute walk was church, grocery station, coffee shop, sit-down and quick service restaurants, and even a community theater (ProArts Maui). It was incredibly convenient and also well-situated to get anywhere else on the island, including beautiful beaches for lounging, snorkeling, or boogie boarding.

We can enthusiastically recommend a vacation getaway at this condo on Maui!

Owner's Response: It’s funny how things change over time. The last several guests have, in the early days of their visit, sent us some truly lovely pictures of them adjusting to life on the beach and in the apartment. In all the years we’ve done this, these pictures are only a recent development. What makes it particularly special to us is that I know from the guests’ emails leading up to their trips that they’ve been running flat out, and are in need of a break. Maybe they have a week, maybe ten days or, for some of the luckier ones, two weeks. But, as it seems to me, they need a place where they can very, very quickly go to ground. Those pictures tell the story — within a day, sometimes less, they’ve pretty much settled in and ‘gone local.’ The smiles seem deep and easy, the stance relaxed, and the togetherness once again close and tight. Man, I love getting those pictures and seeing the difference a nice place can make, and how fast it can make it. You two did the same, sending a delightful picture of you relaxed, happy, and at ease with all. I cannot tell you how lovely it is to receive such a gift. You were grand guests in every way. Normally I try to refrain from making suggestions as preference is very much a personal thing. But your Maui questions and holiday plans had such enthusiasm that it seemed only right to pass along some of our favourites and reliable ‘go-to’ Maui gems. Any worthwhile innkeeper wants all his guests to have the time they wanted, and better. But you seemed particularly keen, and I admit to having had special hopes that you’d find your Maui. You did, and I cannot tell you how pleased that makes me for you. Thank you for bringing your kindness to Maui, Hale Kai O’Kihei, and to this wonderful little apartment on the ocean’s edge. Perfection - time & again!

This is our fifth stay at HKOK208 and every time it surprises us that it keeps getting better. I say surprised because it is perfect every time. How do you improve on perfection? Well I think you never lower your standards and you always want to your guests to have the best stay possible. This kind of service is rare today and that is why we keep coming back.

Owner's Response: One of the great delights in providing accommodation to guests is thinking about how to improve guests’ experience, finding the best means to do it, and then implementing the enhancement. To be sure, a key part of it is making sure that what’s already made available to guests is in top form. So a great supply of spares ensures that somehow, as we walk across that threshold, everything looks, well, new. And that’s a great feeling for us or for any guest. I have to say that’s it’s an incredibly detail-oriented effort, and for that reason, something I quite enjoy. And indeed, it’s what makes a stay with us very, very different than a stay with an agency-run apartment, where one-size-fits-all is the norm, where the bar is usually quite low in terms of fit, furnishing, and content quality. Nothing wrong with that kind of apartment; it’s just a bit soulless for us. But that attention to detail is just about maintaining what’s already available to our guests. What about adding to what’s there, what about the touches the build upon what’s already a pretty rare, and remarkable experience? For me, that’s where the extra fun is, and per your comment and its import, I think it’s what’s bringing guests back for their second, third, fourth and in your case and that of several others, their fifth visits! It means striking arrangements with L’Occitane for our toiletries; and now Molten Brown of London. And finding a way to get them to Hawaii, and Maui. It means doing special things when we know guests are celebrating milestones when they’re staying with us. It means phasing out fresh flowers when we could not get a steady level of quality from local suppliers, and putting in place something that’s longer lasting, like the one-year subscription to Hawaii Magazine that we now provide all our guests — allowing them to receive in their homes, months before their visits to Maui, a truly wonderful publication that lets them read and see some of the cultural, dining, entertainment, and off-the-beaten-track adventures that await them. I cannot wait to get my copy either! It’s transformed our experience of Maui and of all the islands. At the outset, I said that one of the great delights in providing accommodation to guests is improving guests’ experience. Paradise Found

From the moment we walked in to our condo we felt welcomed. The pictures did not do justice to this beautiful condo. Everything was clean, & obviously well cared for. The artwork on the walls, the highend kitchen with everything you could possibly want, the custom shower showing a humpback whale, the lanai with a view to die for, all this & more made us feel the long wait for this vacation was worth it. Certainly not a standard condo, Adam & Michelle have made this a home away from home. Sitting on the lanai, in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening sipping a Mai Tai while watching the sunset, brought us a sense of peace & listening to the waves each night lulled us to sleep. This condo is close to everything, the beach & ocean, a grocery store a block away, several restaurants in walking distance. Our stay here was far too short & we will most definitely be coming back for a longer visit. Mahalo, Donna & John Kraeker, Nanaimo, BC, Canada

A gently sloping sandy beach leads to rewarding swimming and snorkeling at Hale Kai O'Kihei (two snorkel sets are located in the bedroom closet), with low-tide opportunities to walk along the edge of the reef and experience small, beautiful aquatic life.

Cancellation Policy: If booking cancelled at least 60 days prior to arrival, a 100% refund will be made. If cancelled between 60 and 30 days prior to arrival, a 50% refund will be made. Cancellations less than 30 days before arrival are 100% non-refundable, although the $300 security deposit, and the cleaning fee are refunded. Cancellations must be made by 12:00 PM (Central Standard Time) on the appropriate day. There is no refund for shortened stays after arrival. No fee is charged for arrival- or departure-date changes if there is time available and changes are made well in advance; if there is not time available, the cancellation policy will apply. Please purchase travel cancellation insurance if you think your plans may change or be interrupted.

Seven-night minimum stay. Rates are for two people. Winter 2017-2018 rate (Dec. 16, 2017 - Mar. 31, 2018) $275/nt. Summer 2018 rate (Apr. 1, 2018 - Dec. 15, 2018) $160/nt. Winter 2018-2019 rate (Dec. 16, 2018 - Mar. 31, 2019) $260/nt. Cleaning fee is $140. Rates subject to 14.42 HI State Tax (HI Tax ID 111-920-3328-01). We offer guests staying 28 nights or more a 10% discount.

Year-in-advance reservations: Airlines generally don’t post their flight schedules more than a year in advance. For guests who have booked their stay with us in advance of airlines’ publication of their schedules, a difficulty has been created when airline schedules are announced, and flight options don’t coordinate with the dates guests have booked with us. As we are often fully booked, we’ve been unable to change guests’ accommodation dates to match flights. This was very frustrating for guests, so we don't accept reservations more than a year in advance of guest arrival at Hale Kai O’Kihei. That said, we offer our current guests the first opportunity to book the apartment for the same time period in the following year. To take advantage of this, please make your reservation for the following year during your stay.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
