About the property

Exquisite one-bedroom, one-bath beachfront apartment on the ocean's edge

Availability Update: We're almost sold out for fall and winter 2017/18, with a ten-day, December 2017 window remaining.

Thank you so much for considering Hawaii, Maui, and Hale Kai O’Kihei for your vacation. With so many wonderful and exotic holiday destinations to choose from, the Internet bringing access to them right to your home, and vacation time and dollars so precious, we appreciate you taking the time to visit our site.

In finishing, furnishing, and maintaining our apartment 208, we started from a simple premise: what do we like about where we stay when we’re on holiday? Whether we’re doing a home exchange, staying in a reciprocal private club in another city, or in an apartment or condo booked through VRBO, we want a place that speaks to intimacy and individuality.

We don’t like cold, impersonal, one-size-fits-all experiences, where the bare minimum is what’s provided. We want to stay in places where our needs are important, where our time spent travelling to the destination and the cost of getting there is understood and appreciated. We want to stay in homes and apartments where the human touch of the owner abounds — where the owner’s attention to detail and focus on our experience are always top of mind.

It’s all about passion. Your experience with us needs to be exceptional. From the moment you walk in the door, we want you to experience an ocean-front home away from home that is warm and welcoming. Perhaps it’s the colours, the cleanliness, or the carefully selected artwork. Maybe it’s the fresh flowers and wine, or the L'Occitane en Provence toiletries. Or perhaps it's one of the dozens of other little touches — like the beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel gear, binoculars — that make arriving and getting started on your time off and time away just that much quicker and easier.

We spend a great deal of time listening to our guests and tailoring our efforts to their needs. The personal touch infuses all that we do, and that passion is fuelled each time a guest returns, or recommends our apartment to family members and friends.

Again, thank you for choosing Hawaii and Maui, and for considering our apartment 208 at Hale Kai O’Kihei. We’d like you to stay with us, and experience our efforts to make your stay exceptional and to keep you coming back, whenever work schedules, family commitments, or the need to ‘just get away’ allow.

Now, information about what awaits you at Hale Kai O’Kihei and apartment 208 . . . .

If you're looking to stay in one of the nicest oceanfront apartments available at Hale Kai O’Kihei, then you've found it! Apartment 208 in Hale Kai O’Kihei offers the Hawaiian experience you've dreamt of.

If “perfect” is the best word to describe the location of Hale Kai O’Kihei — on a palm-tree bordered golden-sand beach on a quiet residential street off busy South Kihei Road — then “stunning” is the only word to describe apartment 208, a fully renovated, no-expense-spared one-bedroom oasis on the second floor of this Kihei beachfront jewel.

From gorgeous cherry wood cabinets in the kitchen and bath with silent closing drawers, elegant granite kitchen and bath countertops, Kohler fixtures, Grohe faucets, exquisite shower with artist-designed cast-glass panels and found-pebble floor, virtually seamless 18” x 18” tile from the front door to the outer edge of the lanai, top-end appliances including flat-glass cooktop, ultra low-sound dishwasher and compact clothes washer . . .

. . . to a work-of-art ‘glass wall’ to the lanai with feather-light centre-opening doors, a peaceful but high-efficiency Fujitsu Halcyon 18,000 BTU split air conditioner, and yes, even an electric sunshade on the lanai allowing full-lanai use and ocean views, even at the height of the afternoon sun . . .

. . . and backed by only the highest quality and thread-count linens and beddings for refreshing tropical sleep, unit 208 builds on the perfect beachside location of Hale Kai O’Kihei and puts you in the picture in one of the most luxurious and fully outfitted units this jewel of a building has to offer.

And when you add this stunning unit to the perfect location? The Hawaiian experience you've dreamt of, matched by few other units in HKOK.

Relaxing in apartment 208 on the second floor of this beautiful Kihei beachfront property, the stress and pressures of hectic Mainland life are all but forgotten. Offering privacy and calm amid the sight, sound, and feel of gently breaking waves, swaying palm trees, and soothing ocean breezes, Hale Kai O’Kihei, with just over 50 units on three floors, delivers South Maui’s best boutique accommodation and oceanfront experience.

Enjoy the ocean view from your private lanai. Walk across the lawn beneath the swaying palms to swim in the warm, breathlessly blue Pacific. Stroll the quiet and largely undiscovered beach and return re-connected and renewed. Linger in the pool taking in the green lawn, the golden-sand beach, the Island of Lanai, and the sky that goes on forever. Watch the sunset from the warm sand at the edge of the beach, the palms behind you, the future and all its possibilities directly ahead.

This one-bedroom, second-floor oasis will be your ‘home away from home’ with all the amenities you will need for the Maui vacation for which you've been waiting. And Kihei, located on the sunny, southern shore of Maui, is only 20 minutes from the airport in Kahului.

This is one of the very nicest units in HKOK, and offers you the Hawaiian experience you've dreamt of.

This is a licensed vacation rental, so book with confidence. As well, in renting this unit, you are renting directly from the owner, not an agent or third-party representative. The owner has an Internal Revenue Service Tax Identification Number and a Hawaii Tax Identification Number (111-920-3328-01) for the collection and remittance of State of Hawaii Transient Accommodation Tax (TAT) and State of Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET), and dutifully makes all remittances required by law while complying with, and reserving all protections under, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the United States — Canada Income Tax Convention.

About Adam Leamy, Owner

We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O' Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less.

That philosophy guided our renovation and redecoration of our first Hale Kai O’Kihei apartment when we purchased it in 2008 (and sold in 2015). The same approach influenced the additions and touches we've added to this stunningly renovated unit #208, which we purchased in 2011.

We've added more “Maui” colour though a restfully exotic paint palette, thoughtful furnishings, finishings, and appliances, and additional locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork. We don’t like to pack too much when we come to Hale Kai O’Kihei, so we stock snorkels, fins, and masks, boogie boards and beach chairs right down to binoculars and tropical CDs for our guests and us to use.

We’re always learning more about what makes a stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei an outstanding experience for ourselves and our guests. And with #208, one of the nicest units in Hale Kai O’Kihei -- itself the best in boutique accommodation in South Maui -- we’ve perfected the delivery of the Hawaiian experience that we and our guests have dreamt of!

So join us in the great Maui adventure at Hale Kai O’Kihei! Come and visit and discover the Hawaiian holiday of your dreams!

Adam Leamy, Owner purchased this condo in 2011

Why Adam Leamy, Owner chose South Maui

We’ve been visiting HKOK since 1997, and bought our first apartment in 2008, selling it in 2015. This remarkable place, and the experience it offers, gets in your blood. Departures for us and our guests aren’t the end -- they’re just the start of planning for the next trip. And that’s the best way to finish a holiday -- making plans for the next one.

Each time we visit, HKOK delivers. Sometimes we’re doing errands and chores; other times, we’re true ‘guests’ ourselves, relishing the chance to do blissfully, decadently nothing. Just taking in the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of it all. And the great thing is that it’s all there, visible from the private lanai or for direct interaction by way of a few paces across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach.

In March 2011, on a beach walk from HKOK, past the oceanfront estates on Halama St. through Kalama Park, and over a coffee at Kihei Caffe, the decision was made to buy #208. Why? Because in a world of sometimes wearying change HKOK is a welcome, restorative constant. And therein lies the HKOK charm: Shopping and services are a block away and those farther afield run the gamut from Macy’s to Tiffany’s. For us, the real draw continues to be this simple delight: Once we get in the door of #208, and put our groceries away, we're set, and can experience much of what we want from Maui, even whale watching, from our own lanai or our own front yard and beach.

The lure of Maui’s beaches, restaurants and places to watch the world slowly go by remains. But 208, uniquely renovated, offers a wondrous Hawaiian experience, all day long -- one many of us dreamt of in childhood on ‘sick days’ in colder climes, when game-show hosts Bob Barker or Tom Kennedy whisked winners away to Hawaii, affording us all a Technicolor glimpse of this exotic paradise.

Sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared? Still a star-gazer's paradise, and an awesome way to end any day.

What makes this condo unique

We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand.

We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count.

We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air.

We love the midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei.

We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond.

We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow.

We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special.

And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.

Adam and Michelle:

Still the best place to stay on Maui. The place looks terrific and fabulous, as it always does, with all the thoughtful amenities, especially the beach and swimming gear. First rate. It was just too short a stay, but I'll be back. You guys are always planning on adding something to make a stay even better. What's up next?

Owner's Response: Ahh, the fellow traveller! The thanks, as always, are to you. I've become quite used to your quarterly visits over the years, and something seemed amiss when I'd not heard from you . . . But then there you were, passing through again from where points west begin as points far east. Since your last visit, we've dodged yet another effort by Hawaii legislators to nationalize owner-managed vacation properties in its ongoing effort to create a hotel monopoly in the state . . . the state's legislature collapsing in chaos on several fronts in May. Sadly, I've had no choice but to reduce my local spending, as each year more dollars go to local lobbyists. That said, we've upped our spending on guest amenities in California and Washington, and here in British Columbia. So while we've bid farewell to L'Occitane bath products and local fresh flowers, we've reached agreement with Molton Brown of London, and our new line of shampoo, conditioner, shower wash, bath lotion — and their gorgeous hand soap — should arrive via Florida next week! I cannot wait! We tested them out at Nordstrom's in Vancouver last week and they're just stunning. And as you may have noticed upon your return home, current and ongoing guests — as well as guests who have made a difference to me in their words and deeds — are receiving a one-year subscription to Hawaii Magazine. It comes out six-times a year, and for that, is more discerning in its coverage of restaurants to try, routes and beaches to explore, hiking trails to trod, and culture to absorb. Perhaps it will assist guests in planning their upcoming visit, serve as a memento of their Hawaii experience, or spur them on to explore other islands in Hawaii . . . or even destinations further afield. All are just fine with me; it really is a nice read every two months, and it's such a treat to see arrive in the post. As your regular visits remind me, this place — and this apartment — are good places to 'come home' to. I'm always delighted to get your text letting me know you're again on your way, about to appear from the far-off horizon. A singular pleasure, those texts. Thank you. Until our paths cross again . . . Adam

The Best Place Ever

  • 5 of 5

Dear Adam and Michelle,

We had such A TERRIFIC TIME!!!!! It was outstanding. Your place is amazing, just as you said. I wrote about our adventures in your guest book. I long to be back in Maui already. I feel like I belong there.

Oh!!! Wonderful. And so much so because of your condo. The serenity and beauty made our stay into a surprising second honeymoon. It was our fifteenth anniversary, and we could not have spent it at a better place.

I love music, and I play the guitar. Your CD collection, especially the compilation CDs were fabulous, Sounds of Hale Kai. I want the entire collection! Wish I could buy it.

Mahalo to Adam and Michelle for your time, attention, detail, artistry; this makes a fabulous experience for your guests.

Susan and Kenneth

Owner's Response: Exuberance. Love of life. And your eye for the smaller things matched by a pen that fits well to your hand making them more easily seen and appreciated by the rest of us. To me, that bespeaks a grand flair for life and the robust living of it. And in that, the recipe for a long, happy one. I have loved our written exchanges as your visit approached, and since . . . and I shall miss them. In the days ahead, I’ll ready the playlists for the 30-odd CDs that comprise the “Sounds of Hale Kai” collection that I’ve been compiling since 2007, and will send them off to you. New songs, some very old ones -- and some I’d now change -- but all, in their own way, make me long to be at HKOK, or evoke memories of it, sitting on that lanai, taking in the sights and sounds of the lovely blue Pacific and the palms that dot the lawn at its edge. Thank you so much for making your visit so enjoyable for us. Adam

Romantic, relaxing, comforts of home away from home set in paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We were celebrating our 30th anniversary during this 10 day stay in this fantastic location and condo on the beach. We were in desperate need of relaxation and that is what we definitely experienced, in fact I don't think I've ever felt so relaxed as I was on this trip! I literally did not want to leave first time ever I wasn't ready to go home! Enjoyed the lanai so much, ate our meals, watched paddle boarders, sunsets, sea turtles poking their heads up, and loved hearing the conch blown every night at sunset! The remote screen on the lanai helps screen the sun at dinner. The owners thoughtfulness in providing beach chairs, umbrella, beach towels, snorkel equipment, beach boards, cooler and beach bag is a special touch. We sure made use of these! We enjoyed several long walks along the beach our longest being 8.5 miles. We ate most meals in the condo which was so well equipped. We would highly recommend staying in this unit and are so grateful that we did! Linda and Dale P

Owner's Response: I am so very glad you chose Hawaii and Hale Kai O’Kihei for your anniversary, and that you let us play a role in such a significant achievement. I can’t think of a better place to start married life together, and to mark milestones in the journey. And well done, you, for making it a relaxing trip, too. Our first trip to Maui, we stayed farther south, in a lovely new building at the time, on the land side of South Kihei Road, up a hill, more facing east than west. As we crossed the threshold to that apartment, we realized that if we were going to experience Hawaii, and Maui, we’d need to be up and out the door by 7:00 AM, and run hard all day, and not return until after sunset if we were to see it. Put simply, every second spent in that apartment in the waking hours was time spent removed from Hawaii. So, by Day Two, and being out of the apartment for perhaps 12 hours of the day, we were exhausted — and we’d started the holiday pretty beat up in the first place. “Never again,” we said. Next time, we’d find a place right on the water, and not on busy South Kihei Road — we wanted to be on one of those two or three little peninsulas in Kihei that puts you even farther west, with quiet behind us, and nothing but palms, beach, and ocean in front of us. We wanted a place where we could sit on the lanai all day if we wanted to, and not miss a bit of the joy that is Hawaii. That's how we found the hidden treasure that is Hale Kai O’Kihei. Your eloquent description of what you experienced there is what has fuelled our return — and our emotional and physical restoration — year after year since. You’ve nailed it, capturing the sheer, easy, and relaxing delight of the place. And in that, you’ve also succeeded in making us both want to return as soon as we can. Usually we’re there over the First and Fourth celebrations, but this year, it will be later in the summer — work, of course, determining our play, at least for a while longer. But until then, your lovely note will serve as a welcome and spot-on touchstone for what awaits all of us at the end of that journey to Maui and Kihei. Thank you so much for taking the time to pen it, taking us all to that lovely place by the ocean’s edge. Please do return; we’d be delighted if you chose HKOK again, and we’d welcome you in a heartbeat. And again, congratulations on your 30th Anniversary! Adam

Incredible, romantic, perfect place to stay in Maui

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I celebrated our 20th anniversary with a 2-week stay in this amazing condo right on the beach. We've stayed in this complex before so we knew it was great, but this unit (208) is everything you could possibly want. The decor, the amenities, the location, the commitment by the owners to provide the very finest accommodation for their guests- all 5-star!! This location is central to everything so we went all over the island discovering new places to eat and explore. Every morning breakfast on the lanai watching the day come alive and every evening wine and relaxation on the same lanai watching the sun set make this a perfect slice of paradise. We left absolutely as relaxed as could be and so grateful we had this beautiful place to call home for 2 weeks. We highly recommend HKOK 208 and will be back!

Owner's Response: One of the nicest things I’ve ever received from a guest I received from you a few days into your stay; a stunningly lovely picture of you both. The image of contentment. And from your words, above, no trick of the lens, either. In no small way do I live vicariously through our guests. Work means Michelle and I can never get there often enough, so it’s usually an annual two-week trip for us, together, then three-or-four three-day trips for me to ensure all is as I’d want it to be for us and our guests. So I cannot tell you how much I appreciated that photo, and your notes during your stay of your discoveries and adventures. So, I find my self in the odd position of thanking you for bringing Maui to me, and along the way, allowing me to see a place I cherish through a different lens, and the type of traveller I’d like to be through the standard you demonstrated. I very much like your phrase, above, “Every morning, breakfast on the lanai watching the day come alive.” That’s it! Watching the day come alive. There are days that I’m out there before 5:00 AM, with the candle-lantern lit, watching darkness fade, and three hours later, I’m still there, watching it all. Yes, there are chores to do, and other activities, but I can’t tear myself away from that tranquil, restorative active-passivity. Shelly and Alan, thank you so much for returning, and being such lovely guests. Your kind words and your gentle care benefit all who read your lovely note, and visit this lovely little apartment on the ocean’s edge. And that includes Michelle and me, too. How delightful to have you stay and, curiously, rather sad to see you go. Please do consider this your home on Maui, and return whenever you can; we’d be so pleased to welcome you home. Adam

Perfect place to relax and enjoy paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed sitting on the lanai so much, with the soft ocean breeze and the splendid view of palm trees and beach, that we hardly wanted to go anywhere. The view all day and at sunset is spectacular. Coffee in the morning on the lanai, wine in the evening on the beach or on the lanai, candlelight dinners on the lanai... it is hard to describe the sense of peace and contentment we experienced here. The beach and swimming were fine, lounge chairs were comfortable in the shade of the palm trees. Bed was very comfortable, the decor was lovely and the air flow through the condo with the ceiling fans was so lovely and cool that we didn't use the air conditioning at all. Kitchen is equipped with everything you need. When we visited other beaches, we enjoyed having the equipment that Adam and Michelle have so thoughtfully supplied - a cooler, beach chairs, beach umbrella, great snorkel equipment. We can't think of anything we would wish for that was not supplied. Even prosecco and flowers for our arrival! We had rented a car, but next time I think we will rent bikes instead of a car for part of the time as everything you need is so close by and we loved hanging out right there. You can walk a long way down the beach in either direction and nearby we came upon a huge turtle sunning itself up on the beach. Booking and communicating with Adam is a real pleasure. We have never stayed in a place where so much care and attention to the comfort of guests was evident. The building managers, Sue and John, do a terrific job looking after the building and grounds. We never make vacation plans a year ahead, but we booked this condo again for next year as soon as we got home.

Owner's Response: What a lovely note to receive. And one that makes me long for a return to Hale Kai O’Kihei. What you describe is what makes that place special, and restorative. As anyone who reads these notes and who has stayed with us knows, during the course of booking we exchange emails. I don’t like to intrude on guests’ time — not when they’re arranging their stay and certainly not during it (weather warnings are my only exception) — but some information has to be exchanged to make it all work, so we send a few notes back and forth when the stay is being set up, and after — when the security deposit is being returned. Sometimes it is during these exchanges that a guest offers a turn of phrase, or a seemingly unremarkable line that has an impact on me far beyond the intent of the writer. This was particularly the case with you; in one of your notes, you offered a lovely, joyous reminder — right when I most needed it, actually; in the middle of yet another awful Hawaii legislative session marked by closed minds and open hostility — of progress achieved that makes our time so very grand. It was a soft sentence yet harboured powerful words evoking stronger images and, in doing that, spoke to love, generosity, tolerance, and hope and all that’s possible when perseverance prevails in their name. Guests write some lovely things about the property and neighbourhood, and yes, about the apartment and our efforts. That’s very kind, and helpful to us all. But the gift to me, as was the case with your note, are those seemingly unremarkable little phrases that guests offer that carry such significance, and help me along the path to greater appreciation of the good and grand things around us, the critical things in life that are worth our appreciation, our celebration, and our best efforts to further. Thank you so much for finding us and staying with us; I’m delighted to welcome you back next year and any time. Adam

With each visit, I look forward to the next!

  • 5 of 5

Adam, thank you. As you know, your place has become my go-to rest stop on the long trips back from points far past the horizon.

And a funny thing has happened over the past few years since I found your apartment — it feels like coming home each time I get close to Maui and your front door.

Thanks for taking the bookings on short notice, and for all you do to make it work.

I had a good read of your Guest Book this time, and it seems that others have also realized what a stunning place your apartment is, how much you put into it, and why that allows them to get so much out of it.

I have to admit that each time I visit, I discover something in your place that I hadn’t noticed before: This time it was that electric sun-shade on the lanai. I wondered what the remote was for, clicked it, and suddenly, it came down from on high! A great thing to have, that, when the afternoon sun is in full form.

This visit was no exception and my best yet; you made everything fall into place — fast — and you did it with such ease. As my visits add up, I’m finding it harder to leave each time. It’s a lovely apartment, and it’s got a special meaning for me and, clearly, for all who are fortunate to find it.

Until the next time.

Owner's Response: Nice to have you back. I’ve always had a one-week minimum-stay requirement, but when you inquired about a short stay a few years ago, I said yes. Your note was compelling — Maui was a stop-off point after a long trip, and you just needed a couple of days to recharge before heading home and delving in to following up on commitments made during the trip. Could I help? I saw your note as a challenge: Could the apartment and its features — and my management of the booking process — provide the needed two-or-three-day respite for a travel-weary executive? This isn’t as easy a question to answer as one might think: Our guests are visiting on holiday. Their expectations are equally high, but they’ve got more time in the apartment — a week, ten days, two weeks, or more. And they usually book months in advance. Get it right for you, and it was a test passed; get it wrong, and your respite was anything but, and I’d failed. In the end, it worked then, and has continued to do so through the years since. Then, as now, with you, it’s an email out of the blue, and suddenly, it’s game on! It is, for me, a blast. I suspect you know this. I recently flew down for a three-day stay, just to check on things. As I did that, I thought of you, and how this brief visit afforded me the chance to see the place through your eyes — a quick visit, so all had to be perfect, as time was precious. I felt that a couple of things needed to be changed — and were — but as I dumped the car, ready to fly back, I realized just how lovely that apartment is, even if just for a three-day stay. Which is all to say, thank you. Thank you for the push then, and several times since. Your visits have allowed me to see the apartment through a different lens, and have made me a better innkeeper; and, in that, have benefitted all our guests along the way. Adam

A gently sloping sandy beach leads to rewarding swimming and snorkeling at Hale Kai O'Kihei (two snorkel sets are located in the bedroom closet), with low-tide opportunities to walk along the edge of the reef and experience small, beautiful aquatic life.

Year-in-advance reservations: Airlines generally don’t post their flight schedules more than a year in advance. For guests who have booked their stay with us in advance of airlines’ publication of their schedules, a difficulty has been created when airline schedules are announced, and flight options don’t coordinate with the dates guests have booked with us. As we are often fully booked, we’ve been unable to change guests’ accommodation dates to match flights. This was very frustrating for guests, so we don't accept reservations more than a year in advance of guest arrival at Hale Kai O’Kihei. That said, we offer our current guests the first opportunity to book the apartment for the same time period in the following year. To take advantage of this, please make your reservation for the following year during your stay.
