In finishing, furnishing, and maintaining our apartment 208, we started from a simple premise: what do we like about where we stay when we’re on holiday? Whether we’re doing a home exchange, staying in a reciprocal private club in another city, or in an apartment or condo booked through VRBO, we want a place that speaks to intimacy and individuality.

We don’t like cold, impersonal, one-size-fits-all experiences, where the bare minimum is what’s provided. We want to stay in places where our needs are important, where our time spent travelling to the destination and the cost of getting there is understood and appreciated. We want to stay in homes and apartments where the human touch of the owner abounds — where the owner’s attention to detail and focus on our experience are always top of mind.

About Adam Leamy, Owner

We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O'Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less.

That philosophy guided our renovation and redecoration of our first Hale Kai O’Kihei apartment when we purchased it in 2008 (and sold in 2015). The same approach influenced the additions and touches we've added to this stunningly renovated unit #208, which we purchased in 2011.

We've added more “Maui” colour though a restfully exotic paint palette, thoughtful furnishings, finishings, and appliances, and additional locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork. We don’t like to pack too much when we come to Hale Kai O’Kihei, so we stock snorkels, fins, and masks, boogie boards and beach chairs right down to binoculars and tropical CDs for our guests and us to use.

We’re always learning more about what makes a stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei an outstanding experience for ourselves and our guests. And with #208, one of the nicest units in Hale Kai O’Kihei -- itself the best in boutique accommodation in South Maui -- we’ve perfected the delivery of the Hawaiian experience that we and our guests have dreamt of!

Why Adam Leamy, Owner chose Kihei

We’ve been visiting HKOK since 1997, and bought our first apartment in 2008, selling it in 2015. This remarkable place, and the experience it offers, gets in your blood. Departures for us and our guests aren’t the end -- they’re just the start of planning for the next trip. And that’s the best way to finish a holiday -- making plans for the next one.

Each time we visit, HKOK delivers. Sometimes we’re doing errands and chores; other times, we’re true ‘guests’ ourselves, relishing the chance to do blissfully, decadently nothing. Just taking in the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of it all. And the great thing is that it’s all there, visible from the private lanai or for direct interaction by way of a few paces across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach.

In March 2011, on a beach walk from HKOK, past the oceanfront estates on Halama St. through Kalama Park, and over a coffee at Kihei Caffe, the decision was made to buy #208. Why? Because in a world of sometimes wearying change HKOK is a welcome, restorative constant. And therein lies the HKOK charm: Shopping and services are a block away and those farther afield run the gamut from Macy’s to Tiffany’s. For us, the real draw continues to be this simple delight: Once we get in the door of #208, and put our groceries away, we're set, and can experience much of what we want from Maui, even whale watching, from our own lanai or our own front yard and beach.

The lure of Maui’s beaches, restaurants and places to watch the world slowly go by remains. But 208, uniquely renovated, offers a wondrous Hawaiian experience, all day long -- one many of us dreamt of in childhood on ‘sick days’ in colder climes, when game-show hosts Bob Barker or Tom Kennedy whisked winners away to Hawaii, affording us all a Technicolor glimpse of this exotic paradise.

Sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared? Still a star-gazer's paradise, and an awesome way to end any day.

What makes this condo unique

We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand.

We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count.

We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air.

We love the midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei.

We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond.

We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow.

We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special.

And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.

Perfection - time & again!

This is our fifth stay at HKOK208 and every time it surprises us that it keeps getting better. I say surprised because it is perfect every time. How do you improve on perfection? Well I think you never lower your standards and you always want to your guests to have the best stay possible. This kind of service is rare today and that is why we keep coming back.

Paradise Found

From the moment we walked in to our condo we felt welcomed. The pictures did not do justice to this beautiful condo. Everything was clean, & obviously well cared for. The artwork on the walls, the highend kitchen with everything you could possibly want, the custom shower showing a humpback whale, the lanai with a view to die for, all this & more made us feel the long wait for this vacation was worth it. Certainly not a standard condo, Adam & Michelle have made this a home away from home. Sitting on the lanai, in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening sipping a Mai Tai while watching the sunset, brought us a sense of peace & listening to the waves each night lulled us to sleep. This condo is close to everything, the beach & ocean, a grocery store a block away, several restaurants in walking distance. Paradise found in HKOK 208

Counting down the days from 270 to our arrival was a very long wait but well worth it! It heightened our expectations and we weren’t disappointed. To come here to Maui is a wonderful experience but to come to 208 in Hale Kai O Kihei puts that experience over the top! Walking in made us realize that the pictures didn’t do it justice. All the art work on the walls, the dream kitchen with absolutely everything a person could want, including all the high end appliances, that amazing shower door showing a breaching humpback whale & of course the lanai with a view to kill for, made us feel we had indeed found paradise. Adam & Michelle, thank you for being such wonderful hosts, for providing us with all the amenities we could use during our far too short stay, for giving us all the information we needed to make everything go smoothly & for your gracious welcoming gifts. Sitting on the lanai, drinking coffee in the morning & sipping mai tai's in the evening made us wish we could stay here forever! I think watching the most incredible sunsets with the palm trees in front, listening to the waves rolling in against the sandy beach brought a profound sense of peace to us both. Your periodic notes were full of anticipation, and in that, a pleasant yet critically important reminder of how much time on Maui means to people, and the faith people place in booking a vacation rental. Whether it’s a stay of a week or ten days, or longer, those trips certainly represent an investment of travel time and financial resources. But they’re also an incredible investment of emotion: What will Maui be like? Is Hale Kai O’Kihei really right on the ocean’s edge? Will we hear the waves gently break on the shore and the palm trees rustle? And is HKOK208 as pictured in the photos, and as described by the owner? And it’s for precisely that reason — the emotional investment guests make — that we take the care we do. I’ve said it elsewhere in the listing, but with so much anonymous, bare-bones, and less-than-expected accommodation out there, I’ve always wanted HKOK208 to be exceptional; to deliver a guest experience that is so far above and beyond what guests’ experience tells them is the reality that they simply cannot believe they found such an apartment. Your lovely note is the 80th we’ve received since we started with HKOK208 in May, 2011. That’s a strong milestone, indeed, but rest assured that we have never wavered from the focus on the experience of each single guest. Nor will we. Beautiful rental, beautiful stay

Upon entering the condo and seeing the gorgeous view for the first time, we felt right at home. The condo had all we needed and then some. Well done, Michelle and Adam! But the condo was not all that was special about Maui. We have been to the Islands many times and although we love them all, Maui seems to be the place we want to return again and again. Is it the tropical breeze? The surf? The views? The friendly people? The fantastic food? It must be all of the above that contribute to the magical feel of well being while visiting this island. We have too many memories to list but already anticipate our next visit and plan to stay again at HKOK 208.

All excellent questions you ask, and like you, we always find ourselves wondering, ‘just what is it about this place that gets in our blood, and draws us back, again and again?’ For the life of me, I’m not sure, but what you say is true — there is, indeed, some magic to Maui that contributes to a sense of peace and wellbeing when there. And perhaps that’s a rarer commodity than we might all think, so we chase it when we find it, and seek its restorative embrace as often as we can. But maybe there’s something else, too. I think a read of many of the comments on this page suggest a constant: That those who have found Hale Kai O’Kihei and have written about it here demonstrate a kindness, a sensitivity, and a decency. Sometimes, events of life and the world can conspire against those traits — or seem like they are — making their practice seem futile. I like to think that that perhaps Maui, or maybe just this small corner of it on the ocean’s edge, draws the like-minded-in-kindness, and renews them for the important, giving work they do each day, with each interaction, back home. The key thing is that you brought more to us and to HKOK than you took, and for that, we do hope you find time to return; we’d gladly welcome you ‘home’ to your place on the beach. Adam

A true piece of paradise!

After several trips to Maui, we discovered this gem just in time for our 50th wedding anniversary. We have stayed at locations from Napili, Kahana, Ka'anipali and twice in the lower part of Kihei. This is well above all others. No having to cross a busy street to access the beach, no traffic noise or issues of any sort. The unit is BEAUTIFUL, tastefully set and w/many accommodations not offered elsewhere. The owners went above and beyond to welcome us and make our stay a wonderful experience. Perfection on the beach

As I sit here in my office, watching the wet, grey blanket of winter slowly envelope Seattle, I think back to just a month ago and can't help but smile. The warm sun, the smell of the ocean, and the sound of the waves lapping gently at the shore; for eight glorious days we had it all. This was the rest I so badly needed. The chaos of the tourist areas was just a short drive away, but here there was peace. Here there was a sense that the rest of the world had just slipped away, and all that was left was the perfect slice of paradise right off the lanai. And here there is love. You feel it the moment you walk in for the first time, and it stays with you forever. Everything about this place is truly special.

The condo is fabulous, of course. Everything you need is right there for you. It's a warm and inviting space, not some cold, sterile, and generic resort condo. It's like borrowing a beloved space from old friends. We were able to totally relax and fall in love with Maui, and each other, all over again. Maui is our favorite place in the world, and HKOK 208 is now our favorite place in Maui. We're already planning our return next year, and every year after that.

Cancellation Policy: If booking cancelled at least 60 days prior to arrival, a 100% refund will be made. If cancelled between 60 and 30 days prior to arrival, a 50% refund will be made. Cancellations less than 30 days before arrival are 100% non-refundable, although the $300 security deposit, and the cleaning fee are refunded. Cancellations must be made by 12:00 PM (Central Standard Time) on the appropriate day. There is no refund for shortened stays after arrival. No fee is charged for arrival- or departure-date changes if there is time available and changes are made well in advance; if there is not time available, the cancellation policy will apply. Please purchase travel cancellation insurance if you think your plans may change or be interrupted.

Seven-night minimum stay. Rates are for two people. Summer 2017 rate (Apr. 15, 2017 - Dec. 15, 2017) $170/nt. Winter 2017-2018 rate (Dec. 16, 2017 - Mar. 31, 2018) $270/nt. Cleaning fee is $140. Rates subject to 14.42 HI State Tax (HI Tax ID 111-920-3328-01). We offer guests staying 28 nights or more 10% off posted rates.

Year-in-advance reservations: Airlines generally don’t post their flight schedules more than a year in advance. For guests who have booked their stay with us in advance of airlines’ publication of their schedules, a difficulty has been created when airline schedules are announced, and flight options don’t coordinate with the dates guests have booked with us. As we are often fully booked, we’ve been unable to change guests’ accommodation dates to match flights. This was very frustrating for guests, so we don't accept reservations more than a year in advance of guest arrival at Hale Kai O’Kihei. That said, we offer our current guests the first opportunity to book the apartment for the same time period in the following year. To take advantage of this, please make your reservation for the following year during your stay.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
  • Service Fee fully refunded on cancellations that qualify for 100% refund.
