We're like many of the guests we've met at Hale Kai O' Kihei over the years -- we've got demanding jobs, and put a lot of effort into our work. So there are times when we just want to get away from the stress for a few days, and get to a place where living is just easier, the demands less.

That philosophy guided our renovation and redecoration of our first Hale Kai O’Kihei apartment when we purchased it in 2008 (and sold in 2015). The same approach influenced the additions and touches we've added to this stunningly renovated unit #208, which we purchased in 2011.

We've added more “Maui” colour though a restfully exotic paint palette, thoughtful furnishings, finishings, and appliances, and additional locally sourced vintage Hawaiian artwork. We don’t like to pack too much when we come to Hale Kai O’Kihei, so we stock snorkels, fins, and masks, boogie boards and beach chairs right down to binoculars and tropical CDs for our guests and us to use.

We’re always learning more about what makes a stay at Hale Kai O’Kihei an outstanding experience for ourselves and our guests. Why Adam Leamy, Owner chose South Maui

We’ve been visiting HKOK since 1997, and bought our first apartment in 2008, selling it in 2015. This remarkable place, and the experience it offers, gets in your blood. Departures for us and our guests aren’t the end -- they’re just the start of planning for the next trip. And that’s the best way to finish a holiday -- making plans for the next one.

Each time we visit, HKOK delivers. Sometimes we’re doing errands and chores; other times, we’re true ‘guests’ ourselves, relishing the chance to do blissfully, decadently nothing. Just taking in the sights, the sounds, and the beauty of it all. And the great thing is that it’s all there, visible from the private lanai or for direct interaction by way of a few paces across the lawn, through the palm trees to the beach.

In March 2011, on a beach walk from HKOK, past the oceanfront estates on Halama St. through Kalama Park, and over a coffee at Kihei Caffe, the decision was made to buy #208. Why? Because in a world of sometimes wearying change HKOK is a welcome, restorative constant. And therein lies the HKOK charm: Shopping and services are a block away and those farther afield run the gamut from Macy’s to Tiffany’s. For us, the real draw continues to be this simple delight: Once we get in the door of #208, and put our groceries away, we're set, and can experience much of what we want from Maui, even whale watching, from our own lanai or our own front yard and beach.

The lure of Maui’s beaches, restaurants and places to watch the world slowly go by remains. But 208, uniquely renovated, offers a wondrous Hawaiian experience, all day long -- one many of us dreamt of in childhood on ‘sick days’ in colder climes, when game-show hosts Bob Barker or Tom Kennedy whisked winners away to Hawaii, affording us all a Technicolor glimpse of this exotic paradise.

Sitting on the edge of the beach with a glass of wine, long after the sun has disappeared? Still a star-gazer's paradise, and an awesome way to end any day.

What makes this condo unique

We love walking the beach first thing in the morning, before the sun peeks out over the edge of Haleakala, when ours are the first footprints in the sand.

We love the way that in the mid-morning, the water just off the shore is dead calm, and is as many shades of blue, blue-green, and turquoise you can count.

We love watching the horizon out past the shallows, where the water turns a deep, alluring blue, when the breaching Humpbacks send plumes of bright white spray into the air.

We love the midday when beach walkers and sun bathers take a break from the waves and the sun, seeking shade and sustenance, and a quiet falls over Hale Kai O’Kihei.

We love the mid-afternoon awakening when the wind picks up, the waves are more playful, drawing windsurfers and kite surfers to the shore and the challenges beyond.

We love the late afternoon, when the sun accelerates its race for the far side of Lanai and the lawn is a velvety canvas of yellows and greens, set against the dark slope of West Maui to the north, and a still-clear sky speaks to the promise of stars and far-away dreams to follow.

We love when the sun finally winks out behind Lanai, and those who have assembled on the lawn and beach to watch its farewell hug, kiss, or squeeze hands, in that knowing gesture which acknowledges that this one moment, this one sunset, experienced together, was what called them to Maui, and which they will use, in the years ahead, as the touchstone to remember their trip here, and why it was so special.

And then we love when darkness falls, and the two of us head down to the beach, lie back in the sand, and take in the enormity of the clarity and depth of the wondrous night sky.

Kihei Condo

Located on a beautiful golden sand beach the condo is only 20 minutes from the airport and comes well equipped with beach chairs, boogie boards and a few other treats to help start your vacation off right!

Within walking distance you've got a Times Supermarket for your essentials, Akamai Coffee Co for locally grown/roasted coffee and Maui Brewing Co for 20+ tasty craft beers and live music.

Highlights from this trip include the sunrise on Haleakala followed by a nice long bike ride down with Haleakala Bike Co, watching unsuspecting tourists getting tossed by the shore break at Makena Beach and sunsets on the deck at the condo.

We want to come back to use the binoculars during the annual winter migration of Humpback Whales, January to March. Overall it was an awesome vacation and we look forward to coming back soon. Thanks Adam!

Perfect gem in the heart of Kihei! Location Location Location!

We just got back from our second trip to Maui and had the pleasure of staying at Adam and Michelle's beautiful waterfront condo in Kihei. The location is perfect because it is right in the centre of Kihei and so close to many of Mauis best beaches, restaurants, and shopping. South Maui is known for being the best part of the island for watching sunsets and out of over a dozen beaches the beach in front of the condo was one of the best beaches to watch the sunset from. From breathtaking breakfasts on the Lanai to evening strolls down the beach at sunset we fell I love with the charm , beauty and location of this place. We also found the location perfect for how close it was to south Mauis best snorkelling and beaches yet it was also prefect for using as a home base when doing loner day trips to other parts of the island. The owners have done a beautiful job decorating the place with some gorgeous pieces of local artwork and the finishing throughout the condo Is top notch. We feel that this will always be our special place when we go to Maui and we highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get the most out of their trip to Maui.

On the Beach in Kihei!

We had a great time and really enjoyed the central location of the condo. It allowed us to readily explore other parts of Maui some days and others just to relax on the beach a few steps away. It was great to have access to the provided boogie boards, beach towels and snorkeling gear. The condo owners went above and beyond to ensure we had a relaxing stay and would highly recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: It always comes back to guests. I’ve written here before that we’ve had, without exception, remarkable guests. They always seem to get the very best out of their stay, they are a pleasure to deal with, and they take lovely care of the apartment and its amenities. But sometimes, circumstances conspire to test those experiences. This past summer, we shut down our place for two months, the promised timeline for the Board to undertake a long overdue upgrade to the beach-side deck: new grading, the addition of tiles, showers at either end of the building, new pool tiling and fencing, and a foot wash. A lovely, elegant improvement but, in the end, completed almost two months behind schedule; a powerful reminder to those on the Board that project management is an active pursuit — it doesn’t happen on its own. So, for our October and early November guests, no matter the quality of the apartment itself, the experience of HKOK wasn’t exceptional. And that was our promise: an exceptional experience. Full stop. In the end, we had to disappoint four guests; for some, the work was more intrusive than others, but for all, compensation was in order, and was made. And to a person, every one of our guests remained receptive, understanding, and helpful. Greg and Cindy, you were the first of our guests to encounter the project delay, and your approach, attitude, and spirit provided yet another reminder of the delight I experience through this apartment and the guests who visit it. Thank you for staying with us, and we’d welcome you back any time! Adam

Great Experience

My wonderful trip

We love this apartment! It feels like home to us. I just have to share with you that I have always loved the Portmeirion dishware in your condo. Every time we go there I comment on them to my husband. So this trip he said to just order them!!! They were waiting for me when I got home. Just perfect in my Island home. I chose celadon and biscuit colors and also one large bowl. Not only are they lovely, but after all the use in Maui, no chipping. So thanks for the inspiration. I love them!

Owner's Response: A great note! I’ll respond to it in a moment, but first, a bit about your trip for others reading this page. Michelle and I just returned from HKOK. Now, one thing I quite enjoy about visiting is reading our Guest Book in which guests have taken the time to make an entry. The entries run the gamut, really: Restaurant advice is shared, a nice beach find is noted, but most frequently, a special moment about the trip is illuminated — from watching the turtles just off our beach, enjoying the front-row seats the lanai provides to stunning Maui sunsets, to special milestones reached or achievements celebrated during the stay. I was delighted to read of the wonderful time shared with your daughter and son-in-law on their 20th anniversary, with so many friends and family along for the celebration! Your lovely note in the Guest Book prompted me to re-read your entry from 2014 when you marked your 50th Anniversary. I have to say that your history with HKOK is as rich as any I’ve experienced or heard about — it’s perhaps one of the strongest guest ties to HKOK that I’ve come across. Thank you for adding so much to that very special place. Now, to your note above: We love that Sophie Conran dinnerware, too! The only pieces that have ever broken were in shipping from Macy’s on the Mainland or from here in Victoria, BC. They’ve held up so very well, I’ve often wondered if guests have ever used them. In truth, I’m the shopper; I fell in love with that Conran pattern, and the colours. This past weekend, I bought some lovely Hotel Collection towels in a blue-green ocean colour (“Aegean”). Once the Black Pearl (the darker Pacific blue currently in use) runs its course in the next two quarters and we use up the last sets, I’ll ship down twelve HC sets in mauve (“Lilac”), then move to the Aegean. If you think that sounds like a lot of back-ups, don’t even get me started on the Vera Wang toasting flutes! I kid ye not, I sourced 17 sets of those toasting flutes — I thought that with the Prosecco we supply, they’d be breaking all the time. Turns out, I was wrong: With you and all our guests, we’ve been very, very fortunate to welcome kind and caring people who take great care. And in just having returned from what was surely our best visit in years, all I can say is thank you to you two and to all our guests for all that you do to add to enjoyment of the apartment and that lovely property on the very edge of the Pacific. Your Maui Stunner

Still the best place to stay on Maui. The Hawaiian luxury of the unit, with everything you could possibly think of supplied, and, however much you've seen on your travels, you can never get tired of the palms-and-ocean view from Adam and Michelle's lanai. Thanks Adam, for setting up my late arrival with your prep crew on short notice. A too-quick visit, but perfect as ever. I'm always amazed that you and Michelle are able to improve on what already is the top-notch Maui experience. New chairs on the lanai, and the Hawaii magazines on the coffee table. (I've seen these in airports but have never really had the time to actually look at them. Got some good ideas from them for next time.) I travel a lot, and I'm always on the lookout for upgrades. In Maui, I've stopped looking, simply because I can't conceive of a more perfect Maui experience (short of paying three or four times the amount for a hotel penthouse). So, thanks for all your ministrations and attention to detail. It makes a stay, whether short or long, an event to be looked foward to, enjoyed completely without worry, and turn into the best of one's vacation memories. I'm already thinking about the next time I can get to your Maui stunner.

Owner's Response: Always nice to hear from the fellow traveller. And as usual, always the keen eye for detail, too. Yes, new Tropitones on the lanai. They make these amazing sling chairs, and for us tall folk, there is simply no better product out there. Pricey, like my Herman Miller Aeron, but there you go, just the way of it. But for lanai furniture, there's none better. I thought you'd like Hawaii Magazine. I've been reading it for years, and I like the care they take in what they include in each issue. A bit more discerning, made possible by their terrain -- all the islands, not just one. In the fall and winter -- the darker months at home -- there is no greater joy than seeing it's cover blast of Hawaii colour arrive through the post. Not as good as being here, but surely the next best thing. So a bit of a twist. This past month, I bought one-year subscriptions for our most recent guests, several regular guests, and all guests who will be arriving over the next year. About 25 or so; they should get their first issue in late August or September. For some, maybe it'll rekindle good memories of the trip, anniversary, honeymoon, or the simple 're-connect' to what's important that they experienced here. For others, perhaps it will assist in trip planning for their upcoming Maui experience. And for some, it might just inspire a return to Maui or for an adventure on another island that will afford them the chance to see Hawaii from a new perspective. All sound like good things to me. Michelle and I are just wrapping up our visit. And I have to say that it's been the best visit in years. HKOK has never looked better, the lawn and beach have been quiet, and our guests have done us the very kindest turn; they've cared for our place as if it were their own -- so a very heartfelt 'thank you' to all who have stayed with us for being such gracious guests. And to you, as well, fellow traveller. Whenever your travels bring you by Maui, whether for one night of several, you have a home here. Cancellation Policy: If booking cancelled at least 60 days prior to arrival, a 100% refund will be made. If cancelled between 60 and 30 days prior to arrival, a 50% refund will be made. Cancellations less than 30 days before arrival are 100% non-refundable, although the $300 security deposit, and the cleaning fee are refunded. Cancellations must be made by 12:00 PM (Central Standard Time) on the appropriate day. There is no refund for shortened stays after arrival. No fee is charged for arrival- or departure-date changes if there is time available and changes are made well in advance; if there is not time available, the cancellation policy will apply. Please purchase travel cancellation insurance if you think your plans may change or be interrupted.

Seven-night minimum stay. Rates are for two people. Our Winter 2016-2017 rate (Dec. 12, 2016 - Apr. 14, 2017) is $285/nt. Our Summer 2017 rate (Apr. 15, 2017 - Dec. 11, 2017) is $160/nt. Cleaning fee is $140. Rates subject to 13.42 HI State Tax (HI Tax ID 111-920-3328-01). We offer guests staying 28 nights or more 10% off posted rates.

Year-in-advance reservations: Airlines generally don’t post their flight schedules more than a year in advance. For guests who have booked their stay with us in advance of airlines’ publication of their schedules, a difficulty has been created when airline schedules are announced, and flight options don’t coordinate with the dates guests have booked with us. As we are often fully booked, we’ve been unable to change guests’ accommodation dates to match flights. This was very frustrating for guests, so we don't accept reservations more than a year in advance of guest arrival at Hale Kai O’Kihei. That said, we offer our current guests the first opportunity to book the apartment for the same time period in the following year. To take advantage of this, please make your reservations for the following year during your stay.
