The following are suggestions of fun sites to see while you're visiting Los Angeles. Should you be curious about the history of our city this timeline will provide you with fun facts.
You could spend your day in L.A. at the Universal Studios theme park and the attached City Walk outdoor mall. Or you could take a picture of the Hollywood sign. (No, you can't drive to it. You can't even walk to it; there's a fence. So, from Franklin Avenue in Hollywood, turn uphill onto Beachwood Canyon Drive and take a photo halfway up the street. Or park at the end of Beachwood and hike 30 minutes to get really close.)
You could stroll down Hollywood Boulevard to Grauman's Chinese Theater and look at all the celebrity handprints and footprints, pose for photos with the weirdos who dress up as superheroes and ask you for money, then go hang out the Hollywood and Highland Center mall. Trendy and classic fashionistas will love perusing the clothing and furniture boutiques of world famous designers and up and comers along Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard, Sunset Plaza, Beverly Boulevard, Third Street and La Brea Avenue. You could spend the day strolling in and out of a luxury stores on the twisty part of Rodeo Drive. Perhaps you could drive 45 minutes south to Disneyland for a day of memory making.
On almost any night of the week you can catch some great music from top acts of today and of lore at the Whiskey A-Go-Go (the Doors were the 'house band' in 1966!), the Troubadour, The Roxy Theatre (you just never know who is catching a bite at the The Rainbow Bar and Grill next door), The Key Club and The House Of Blues. An inspiring time can be had at The House of Blues every Sunday morning at the Gospel Brunch, featuring legendary gospel performers along with your biscuits and eggs!
Top Restaurants include the new Ink, by Michael Voltaggio, a winner of Bravo's Top Chef competition; BLT, by Gordon Ramsey of “Hell's Kitchen” fame; James Beard award winning chef, Suzanne Goin's Lucques, and Agostino Sciandri and Robert Deniro's Ago. If the paparazzi is an experience you just have to see for yourself, try the family owned and operated Madeo's, long a Hollywood crowd favorite for Northern Italian, or the Ivy, which flies in stone crabs daily from Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach. Young professionals and the entertainment crowd flock to Urth Caffe on Melrose Avenue all day long for fresh, light meals and excellent organic coffee, tea and juice drinks. And late at night, well actually, all day long, you'll find a line wrapped around the corner for one of Pink's Hot Dogs on La Brea Avenue.
If you're in need of a day at the spa or hair and makeup for a special occasion, there are many options to be pampered at the spas and salons that cater to fashionable trendsetters. Prive on Beverly Boulevard, the intimate setting at Kinara Spa on Robertson Boulevard and the glamorous Argyle Salon & Spa at Sunset Tower Hotel on Sunset Boulevard are just a few of your options.
Parking. Read street parking signs very carefully, especially in West Hollywood and Santa Monica, where I've funded entire traffic cops' salaries. Basically, you're going to put the keys into your rental car at the airport and never take them out: You'll be valeting everywhere. Even The Grove Mall.
Taxis. There are very few cabs to hail, despite what the new local law allowing hailing may imply. So perhaps you may want to rent a car.
Tipping. In restaurants, the standard tip is 15% to 20%. Give $2 per drink at bars and $2 to valets. They should really make those $2 bills more popular.
Beaches. The less crowded ones are south — Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach. The northern beaches — Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu are a quick jaunt up Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).
