Margaret, An understandable review. As I said when we talked about a month ago, I am truly sorry for the problems this issue caused for you and your family; I’m very sorry to hear that the alternate accommodations didn’t live up to your expectations and this problem interfered so severely with your vacation! When you reported the bed bug problem after your second night in the home the pest control inspector deemed that it was severe in one of the five bedrooms, and significant enough to strongly recommend leaving the home to treat fully, which we did. We felt somewhat lucky that it did not spread to the other rooms. We only have the one home in Florida and we did not have any other options for you other than to give you a full refund to help you fund an alternative stay; I understand that VRBO was helpful in attempting to find alternate accommodation but it sounds like that did not live up to your expectations for a comparable property to our home. Since we were made aware of this problem by you 31 days ago we haven’t hosted any other guests in the home. Instead, in that time, the house spent over 7 days being treated by professionals and an additional 21 days in a waiting period for a follow up inspection. We disposed of the affected furniture, bedding, box springs and mattress (it was "only" one of the 2 main king bedrooms; the one we most commonly use ourselves), purchased new furniture/bedding, mattress, new bed bug covers (for all the bedrooms), thoroughly cleaned, washed all bedding, and deep cleaned all carpets (I have been doing this myself for the past week*). Yesterday, with the recommended 21 day waiting period complete, we had a follow up inspection on the problem. According to the report received last night, the bed bug issue has been handled thoroughly. I understand the concerns this type of problem poses and I would not be staying in the affected room if I was not comfortable with the bed bug problem being fully resolved. I have been staying in the room for the past 5 nights after all the remediation, new bedding, furnishings, and mattress was set up. The home is 100% ready for guests again as I leave today. We've been renting this home for 9 years now and this is the first time we've had to deal with bed bugs; based on the feedback and advice of professionals we believe we've taken the correct steps in treating the problem and made improvements in our home & property management process to help ensure this doesn’t happen again. This has been an emotionally charged issue for my wife and I and we can only imagine and appreciate your own concerns as a guest. I’m sure it was enormously disappointing to not find a similar property available when ours let you down. I’m also sorry we & VRBO weren’t able to fully resolve the problem to your satisfaction during your stay. Robert, Thank you for your review of our home. I'm sorry you were not entirely happy with your stay and we welcome your honest feedback. I apologize that the pool area and furnishings were not to your liking. I believe our furnishings are true to the photos shown on our site; some appliances and bedding have been upgraded since the pictures had been taken. We rely on feedback to keep our home comfortable for our guests and this was the first we were made aware of this problem around the pool. Since your visit and feedback, the pool area (and driveway) was power washed and thoroughly cleaned; I would not expect to see the same problems with weeds or algae around the pool at this time although as you point out Florida weather can cause changes at any time. We encourage our guests to contact us or our management company immediately with any questions or issues that arise during their stay. In the past, we have asked for prompt visits from the pool company or maintenance staff if a guest felt there was something amiss. I'm very sorry we were not able to address your concerns while you were on vacation at our home. We have had many guests who enjoyed their stay at our home and I wish we would have been able to provide you with a very enjoyable experience as well. Thank you again for your candid feedback.
