Cottage, 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath, (Sleeps 4), Pet-friendly, Min age of 6 for kids
At Grandview on the Bay, we have two cottages that provide the ultimate for relaxation on Mathews County’s Chesapeake Bay VA: the Fish House and the Crab Shack (VRBO Listing 357886). We’ve spent over a decade designing and renovating our property Grandview to give guests impeccable access to nature, relaxation and privacy. A great romantic vacation getaway or a memory making adventure for a small family awaits you. In February 2013, we started the construction of our new cottage, the Fish House, complete with a master king size bedroom with balcony, a second bedroom with two twin beds and gourmet kitchen. From your bedroom balcony, enjoy expansive views of the East River or watch the sun rise over the water with your morning coffee. Crave relaxation? We’ve got it! Find what suits your vacation style best – swimming in the pool, fishing or crabbing on the pier, kayaking, biking, bird watching, strolling around the coastal landscaped pathways or lounging in chairs and hammocks located throughout our three acre property. Grandview has excellent access to the Lower Chesapeake for sailors, intracoastal cruisers & fisherman with dockage for small boats & deep water anchorage for larger craft. We hope your time at Grandview will show you why we came to Mathews for a weekend and decided to stay a lifetime!
The Fish House is designed for comfort and relaxation, similar to the Crab Shack but a bit larger to accommodate a family of four (minimum age of six for children). The second level of the cottage contains your master bedroom with a king size Sleep Number bed as well as a second bedroom with twin beds. The first level offers an open concept gourmet kitchen and living room area with a leather sofa to sink into while enjoying the large screen flat panel tv, featuring satellite tv with the professional football package and a 200+ DVD collection. Love to cook? Master Chef Karla designed the gourmet kitchen with cooks in mind and she loves to share great recipes for locally available seafood. Step outside and pick fresh herbs from the garden.
What would vacation be without swimming! Refresh yourself at our swimming pool with bar area, double hammock swing, loungers, rocking chairs, dining table & grill. Can’t get enough of the water view then try your hand at good ole fashioned crabbing with chicken legs and strings on the pier or relax in the Adirondack chairs while the crab pots do the work for you. Revive yourself with a nap in the huge couples’ hammock in our mint garden (great for tea or mint juleps/mojitos). Quiet time abounds as well so relax in one of our reading areas or just kick back and rest in the lounge chairs located throughout the property. Bird watchers love viewing dozens of water fowl and bird species including our resident heron, egret and osprey. Stroll around the pathways and neighborhood and enjoy our wildlife and gardens with coastal landscaping. If you want to try an adventure, take our kayaks for a paddle and our bikes for a spin. Love fishing? Bring your boat, tie up to our pier and join in catching some of the hundreds of flounder and rockfish garnered by our guests and resident expert, Capt Dave who is happy to provide local fishing intelligence.
If you want some sand in your toes, we are a short drive from Haven Beach, Aaron Beach and Bethel Beach in Mathews with great birding, shell gathering, strolling. If you’re looking for a day trip, we are an hour away from Colonial Williamsburg & Busch Gardens, Yorktown and horse racing at Colonial Downs. We are centrally located between Virginia Beach and Washington DC and a mere 90 minutes from Richmond. We are proud to be a Virginia Green facility!
While smoking is not permitted in the cottage, guests are permitted to smoke outdoors in approved areas. We are pet lovers and have a pets considered policy so please contact us about your specific pet to see if Grandview is right for vacationing with your family member. Spend less time packing and more time playing! At Grandview, we provide many items that other rentals make you bring or rent. See our website for a complete list or email us with any needs or questions. Let us know how we can make your time in Mathews County GRAND!

About Karla Scanlan
We (Dave and Karla) are the proud 'parents' of our yellow Lab, You'reNothingtoMeNow Fredo and Skink, (we were also blessed for 13 yrs with Deputy Festus, our chocolate lab, who you'll see in a lot of our photos) and the delighted uncle and aunt of ten nieces/nephews living in VA and CA. Our labs have traveled w/us on vacations down to the Florida Keys and up to Bar Harbor (where we honeymooned nearly three decades ago). All the kids in our lives regularly remind us how amazing the rural life is and how lucky we are to be so immersed in nature. For our primary jobs, Dave runs an orthodontic lab & Karla is a mkt research analyst. Don't hold it against us but we're die hard Dallas Cowboys fans since the late 70s..hence the importance of having the professional football package available to all our guests in the fall!
Karla Scanlan purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Karla Scanlan chose Foster
In 1998, my husband Dave and I became the third owners of Grandview which was built in 1946 by master carpenter John Mason. At purchase, we found a hand made sign in the shed indicating that Mr Mason had named his home Grandview. We loved the name and kept it! After four years of being weekenders, we moved to Mathews permanently to enjoy the laid back life style. We now live at Grandview year round and are on site to provide local fishing expertise or help plan your trip to Mathews County. In early 2011, we renovated the original owner's cottage to create the Crab Shack (VRBO #357886) as a stand alone vacation rental on our property, Grandview.
What makes this Cottage unique
Grandview quickly works its magic on guests with its privacy, abundant nature and relaxation. The birdlife is simply amazing (Karla's dad is an ornithologist so we have a great appreciation) and on a clear night you can't believe the stars! From our pier you can catch fish or crabs or put on some waders and pick some oysters. Dave's even caught a snapping turtle and a gar from the pier! Mathews County's culture is a bit like the Florida Keys (which we love) in that you quickly adapt to island time. You stop worrying about all your emails and to do lists and time is measured by meal time, cocktail time and nap time. Our double hammock swing poolside was purchased on a trip to Key West. We specialize in getting people to relax, take a deep breath and enjoy nature in all its glory. Mathews County doesn't even have a stoplight but we have 90 miles of water trails great for kayaking and boating and nine coastal trails that are part of Virginia's Birding & Wildlife Trails system. For bicyclists, the Tour de Chesapeake is held annually in Mathews offering bike routes of varying lengths. The Crab Shack provides a two person accommodation with great water access and amenities while the larger Fish House offers plenty of space for a family of four or four adults.

Sports & Adventure Activities
Just read the description—you get exactly what is in the Property details section. The owners are great hosts and strike just the right balance between being hospitable and leaving you for your fun. For us that included kayaking (marvelous), biking (great but limited routes for kids) and mini-golf (yes your own course). Read the recommendations! We hit the White Dog Cafe with our white dog. we’ll be back!
This is a gem of a property! We are so happy and thrilled with everything the Fish House had to offer! Karla and Dave are amazing and so wonderful to work with! We appreciated all the "little" details that were made us feel so welcomed and right at home. The house is top of the line comfortable and cozy- with divine views! Karla and Dave are very welcoming to all guests- especially dogs!!! We greatly appreciated the grand welcome- a basket of toys and treats for the dog and a bottle of wine for us! We enjoyed the putt-putt on the property and just enjoying sitting on the pier enjoying the view. Such a beautiful home, property and relaxing place to stay! You will not be disappointed! Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven with us!
Relaxation Destination w/plenty to do
As in other reviews, pictures cannot do Grandview on the Bay justice. Immaculate, relaxing, fun, houses, grounds, and especially people. The attention is in the details down to the welcome letter to our dog Misty from Karla, a basket of toys for her to play with, and the doggy game she loved where you hide the treats and she has to move puzzle pieces around to get to the treats. As you pull into the driveway you feel as if you don't want to be anywhere else. Karla and Dave make you feel welcome and at home and they are readily available for questions or suggestions but give guests plenty of privacy to roam, play "pup putt"
on their custom mini golf course, kayak on the river, or just play with your dogs on the beautifully landscaped 5 acres. We only stayed for 2 nights in October but plan to come back to enjoy the pool in warmer weather. We explored around the area and found plenty of places to eat within a short, quick drive and appreciated the lack of "chain" restaurants along with the friendliness of all the locals. Also drove down to Yorktown waterfront (45 min)for Market Days Even our 12-year-old daughter just relaxed and enjoyed herself kayaking and playing with our dog Misty and Karla and Daves dogs Fredo and Skink. Nice drive to get there as well. The view has to be seen in person from the decks or dock to understand how great it is. We will be back and have already recommended Grandview on the Bay "Fish House" or "Crab Shack " to friends and family. Thanks again to Karla and Dave, The Blucher family.
2 nights was not enough!!
We stayed in the crab shack last year and opted for the Fish House this year. Again we were really impressed by the property. The kitchen was fully equipped (better than my own). Everything is in pristine condition. The grounds are beautiful and it is so relaxing just to be at Grand View. I felt my stress vanish as soon as I arrived. This is a terrific spot if you like kayaking or Paddle Boarding. There is also a fun mini-golf course.
Karla is very helpful and friendly. We are already talking about when to return for another visit.
Wonderful views and clean cottage
Our stay at the fish house was fabulous. The cottage was clean and comfy with beautiful views of the water. It was nice to find such a great place that welcomes dogs; Karla provided a basket of toys for our 4 yr old heeler Dolly. Dolly enjoyed the open space, toys and multiple dog mats; she had her own little vacation. It was great to be able to keep our boat tied at the dock for easy access. Evening bike rides and putt putt kept us busy when we weren't fishing. The pool is very nice as well. Other reviews suggested that everything you need is on sight and that is 100% correct; Karla has the cottage set up with everything you can think of and then some. We absolutely enjoyed ourselves and plan to return.
Karla also provides a ton of information on the area from restaurants to fun things to do!!
Heaven on the Chesapeake Bay in a beautiful, quiet setting
I knew we were gonna love this place just by talking with Karla. She is so sweet and makes you feel comfortable when conversing with her by email. When you enter the property you are immediately in love with the way the property is set up. It is very well maintained. You see the mini golf course with the cozy swing under a pergola. There are rows of trees planted and a hedge with crepe myrtle trees. There is also a little garden area over near the tree grove. We stayed in the Fish House. It is very beachy looking and looks very new. It was built in 2013. There are 3 sets of steps. It has a covered parking area for loading and unloading. When you walk in the door you fall in love immediately with the decor. It looks like it was professionally decorated. The kitchen is fully loaded with everything you need plus more. It is even stocked with things like spices, pancake mix, olive oil, canola oil, condiments, plastic bags, aluminum foil, dish detergent, etc. They also provide beach towels and towels for the dogs. You also don't have to worry about shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand soap. I have never stayed at a place that provided so much so you don't have to pack as much. The sitting area in family room is cozy and they also have many DVDs for watching. There is a bathroom room on first floor that is adorably decorated with a beautiful blue color and sand dollars and more beachy decor. The laundry room on first floor has a hug washer and dryer. The counter seating at kitchen really is comfortable. There is a beautiful wooden spiral staircase going up to second floor. The upstairs has the master bathroom that is very comfortable and the beachy theme. There is a shared bathroom that has double sinks. The spare bedroom has two double beds. The view from the house is amazing. You have a beautiful water view. There is a nice deck on first floor that has two tables and chairs for outside eating. There is a beautiful pool for swimming. They provide two kayaks as well as two bikes. Karla and Dave have provided us with everything to have a great, relaxing vacation. While the town of Bohanon is rural. You don't have to go far to visit some of the local towns and lots of great restaurants! This was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had! I highly recommend this rental house. Thank you Karla and Dave!
We are conveniently located an hour from Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country in Williamsburg, 45 minutes from /Yorktown and an hour from horse racing at Colonial Downs. Mathews has great beaches for walking, shelling, birding, or just kicking back and building sand castles.
