About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Imagine 50 secluded acres overlooking the northern Alexander Valley with 360 degree views of surrounding mountains, fir forests and native flora and fauna. Behind a locked pipe gate, up a dirt road sits a sweet redwood ranch style house with a large porch, covered area for outdoor dining, bon-fire pit, and many campsite like spots around the property. Originally a sheep ranch, the property has many outbuildings, seasonal creeks, and dirt roads for on-site hiking. While you’re stretching your legs, stop and have a drink from the spring then come back and take a dip in the solar heated pool.

The kitchen is well equipped for anyone who enjoys cooking. Lots of interesting serving platters, linens, wine glasses, large plates and dishes. Perfect for wine country entertaining. Eat in the kitchen or outside at the long farm table in the covered area. The cabin-like living room with knotty pine walls, wood burning fireplace, comfortable furnishings is a great place to relax. There are three bedrooms with two with queen beds, one with king. Each room with it’s own unique style. Two full bathrooms and a laundry/mud room.

The quaint town of Cloverdale is a 10 minute drive away. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, a movie theater, a farmers market in the summer months, and “Friday Night Live” on the square. Russian River swimming holes within 3 miles. Healdsburg is just 20 minutes south, Hopland 20 minutes north, and Booneville in Anderson Valley is 35 minutes west. There are lots of wineries in the area for tasting and picking up a bottle to enjoy back at the house.

In other words, this is a great place to go if you want to get away from everything and just be.

Note: We advise all wheel or 4 wheel drive to drive up the 1/3 mile dirt road during the rainy season. The house is heated by two wood burning fireplaces during the cold season. We supply wood, kindling, etc. No air conditioning, ceiling fans in each bedroom. No dishwasher.

About Susie Hysen

I was born and raised in San Luis Obispo and moved to the Bay Area in 1980 where I have been ever since. I live with my husband in West Marin but love to come up to our place outside of Cloverdale to get rejuvenated by nature. I am an interior designer with my own practice, most of my work is in Marin County. My husband and I love to hunt for antiques and other interesting old stuff. We love talking long drives and looking for interesting undiscovered places. We also have a Hacienda on the Coast of Oaxaca where we spend 3 or 4 months a year. You can see it on VRBO.

Susie Hysen purchased this house in 2003

Why Susie Hysen chose Cloverdale

I bought this property 15 years ago after spending time with one of my best friends who has a house on the other side of our valley. We can see each others houses with binoculars. When I was first shown the property by her realtor knew I had to buy it. I feel very lucky to have it and when you see it you will know why.

What makes this house unique

I grew up going to ranches and there's just something about that kind of setting that really strikes a chord within me. The most special part about this property is the land and surrounding views in all directions. You feel like you are so far away from everything yet downtown is within minutes. Not a day goes by that we don't see some kind of wildlife, deer, pigs, turkeys, hawks and other birds. We even saw a Golden Eagle once. There is also a spring on the property that has amazing drinking water. We love our country pool and of course the house itself is so cozy and cabin like. The front porch is a great place to have a glass of wine in the evening or a cup of coffee in the morning.

Excellent serene retreat, road up needs attention

  • 3 of 5

The property is as described and we really enjoyed our stay once we made it up the steep hill. This is good for someone looking for a serene rustic retreat (verizon & tmobile service worked, wifi available) . There are views in all directions and we enjoyed sunrise and sunset on the property. The pool was a cool respite on hot days however we did have to clean out some of the leaves that had fallen in beforehand. There were several lounge chairs with cushions provided poolside and foam floaters/noodles to use in the pool. The house is very well equipped in terms of supplies: condiments in kitchen, lots of cookery for dining in, toiletries and paper supplies, plenty of towels, charcoal and wood for the grill / fire pit. Note that the kitchen does not have a dishwasher or stove top hood (don't cook anything that will smoke up !). Some of the things left possibly by previous guests might be welcome by some but we found that certain areas of the house could use some decluttering in this respect. The house was clean except for the inside of the dressers/closet. Beds were comfortable. Ceiling fans only available in the bedrooms, common areas can get a bit hot. There aren't many windows with screens. If the owner can provide a portable large fan for use in the common areas that would be better. This is an ideal spot for those wanting to get some rest and relaxation (4.5 / 5) and not as conducive for those wanting to go out a lot to explore the surrounding area due to the nature of the road (the road drops this rating to 3/5). We had a SUV but the rental company didn't have AWD available. Even if we had AWD, I really only recommend getting up the steep one lane hill by experienced drivers. The road is gravel and sandy in parts, there are 2 sections at turns which were very bad to negotiate..sheer drop off on one side, gutter on the other side, steep incline, and deep potholes dug into the sand by other cars spinning their wheels. If by chance you get stuck you should feel comfortable backing down the steep incline and attempting to go up again without too much power to spin but just enough to get good friction (handbrake helps). I wouldn't want to drive this after rain or in the dark. The owner needs to compact the road down, widen it if possible, and add more reflectors on tight turns at drop offs. Great property but the road condition is only going to get worse as more cars spin out in the same spots. Needs addressing.

Owner's Response: We specifically stated in description of property that there is a 1/3 mile dirt road up to the house and that all or four wheel drive was recommended. We have since revised that to REQUIRED.

beautiful property with total privacy and fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

My wife, 2 small children, 2 dogs and I stayed over the labor day weekend. The property was exactly what we were looking for. The dogs ran around til they got tired, kids swam in the pool, went on family hikes in the mornings, short drives to wineries and great restaurants for lunch (Geyserville), and grilled out every night. The house was super cute and had every necessity (except a dishwasher and microwave). They had charcoal and wood for the grill and firepit ready to go. The pool was the perfect size for swimming with 2 small children. Satelite TV with every station imaginable. The beds were comfortable. I could go on and on. If you are looking for a super private location that is not far from civilization this is the place.

Beautiful, Comfortable and Relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Susie's place is exactly as advertised and more. The house was very clean, organized, and well appointed with great antique furnishings, comfortable beds and nice linens, vintage and contemporary art, a fully equipment stocked kitchen for cooking, nice outdoor dining and seating areas with fantastic views. The pool is perfect for cooling off and hanging out and we did several steep and exhilarating hikes on the property that brought us higher up to even better views! One word of caution: my son, who is a major soccer player and is always kicking and juggling a ball around, did lose TWO balls down the's that steep!

Her place is very close to the Russian River so we went to the Cloverdale River Park (5 minutes away) and put in there for a nice, slow float and picnic. Another day, we went to the Healdsburg Veteran's Memorial Beach (25 minutes away) and swam and BBQ'd. Then we hit the Healdsburg main square for ice cream and to check out some of the art galleries. But truthfully, if I didn't have kids, I wouldn't have left the property because it was so idyllic!

Susie was a great host--very responsive to my email questions and very accommodating in general. We would definitely stay there again.
