Sobre esta propriedade

A Stone Farmhouse With a Courtyard And a Vineyard In a First-Century Roman Town

The Mas des Arcs is a nineteenth-century stone farmhouse, built partly from stones recycled from Roman buildings. In the cellar you can see a whole section of wall built with these stones. The house is built around a small courtyard with a wrought iron gate. Up until the middle of the twentieth century it was the farmhouse for a working farm. There is the base of an old olive oil press in the cellar. In the living room there is a huge working fireplace that the farmers used for their cooking; there are logs to burn in it if the day is cool.

The house is set on more than an acre and a half of land, with a small vineyard, a pine grove and a swimming pool. In the winter and early spring there are daffodils and other flowering bulbs, in the summer the fragrance of our lavender. There are fig trees, plumtrees, cherry trees and almond trees on the grounds and muscat grape vines in the courtyard and on a sunny south wall. This means blossoms in the winter and spring and fruit that you can pluck and eat in the summer and fall. We have planted herbs---rosemary, thyme, sage, tarragon and winter savory---that you can use in your cooking along with the leaves of a bay tree that stands outside the kitchen, protected from the winter cold by a huge old Cedar of Lebanon.

We spend a lot of time in our house in Vaison, so we have tried to make it as attractive and comfortable as possible. There are antique wooden shop signs and folk art---Haitian, Balinese, Mexican, French and American--on the walls. There are several Persian rugs on the floor that we brought back from Iran; we found one of them in a black tent of the Q'ash Q'ai nomads. There are also some of our own paintings and rugs. We do ask you not to smoke inside the house.

Downstairs the house has a large living room/dining room/library with a fireplace, a TV and a radio/ CD/tape player, a lavatory, the sun room and a large kitchen, equipped with five-burner, two-oven stove, a dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster and food processor. There is a clothes washer in the back for laundry. Upstairs there are four double bedrooms---three with two-person beds and one with twin beds---and one single bedroom, so the house can take up to nine people. There is also a crib in case you will be traveling with an infant. There are two bathrooms upstairs, one with a shower and one with a bath and shower. Across the courtyard are the ping-pong room and another lavatory. The house is well supplied with dining, bed and bath linens and is well-heated for the colder months. On the grounds there are several fragments of Roman architecture. There is plenty of room for parking. Outside the kitchen door there is a dining area facing the vineyard, where we have most of our meals during the warmer weather.

The house has Wi Fi and renters can have a bottle a day of wine made partly from the vines of our vineyard.

Vaison has a lively musical scene. It calls itself the European Choral City and is famous for its Choralies, a triennial festival where choruses from all over Europe come to sing in the Roman theater and other sites in the city. But there are more intimate music programs all the time, in the Roman theater, in the churches, at the Chateau de la Villasse. And serious dance is produced at the Roman theater in July. Once when we were there a rock group had a gig at the Roman theater. It was so loud that we decided we would give back $100 for any night that renters said they were disturbed by sound from the theater. Fortunately concerts like that are very rare; we have rarely been asked for a refund. On the whole noise isn't too much of a problem. Although the house is only a six minute walk from the center of town, it is in a greenbelt and it's oriented toward the vineyard, which is surrounded by a high hedge that not only keeps out noise but makes it very private. Mainly from the front bedroom you can often hear the traffic from a secondary road a few hundred feet away and a few evenings in the summer you can hear the music from Roman theater. But as one of our friends says, 'The vibrant life of your 2000-year-old Provençal town against the occasional noise? It's worth it!'

We bought the Mas des Arcs in 1989 and spend time there at least twice a year. We love our house in France and hope you will too.

Lovely property

We had a wonderful holiday in this property to spend my daughter’s 18th birthday! It was a smooth booking process and the owners were very kind to accommodate our request. The location is stunning and very close to the shops and restaurants. It was very hot thae week we were there so would have loved to have AC but there were table fans around to use. Very helpful suggestions for sightseeing too! The vet was also very close by so we could get our dog’s formalities also sorted easily before our travel back. Would love to come back!

Provencal ambiance

The property is an easy drive from Avignon where we had picked up our rental car. It's a wonderfully large parcel of land that is extremely private but located just a couple of blocks away from the center of town. The house itself offers lots of space so you can always find a quiet place to read. or you can join your family for a swim in the beautiful pool set alongside the vineyard. I couldn't imagine a more idyllic setting in a town that offers so much to do - culturally and historically.

Oud

Better than advertised

Three, widely traveled, couples just spent a week in Mas des Arcs and Vaison La Romaine. We were very impressed and found the town, region and home even better than advertised. As advertised, Mas des Arcs is right across the street from a Roman Amphitheater. What we didn't understand is that is just part of a large complex including a museum. Well worth exploring. There are also Roman ruins at the top of the town. Mas des Arcs is also perfectly located to explore Viason La Romaine on foot. We didn't think their on-line tourism information did the town justice. We found the town to be the perfect combination of a working village; along with just enough tourism. Not much English spoken here; which added to the authenticity. The small towns nearby were also delightful. Phyllis left us detailed recommendations on places to eat. We followed several and found them her observations to be spot-on. We spent one day at Mount Ventoux. Two of us hiked up while the remainder visited an Inn and Sheep Farm. We all concluded with a fabulous lunch. Another day, we drove to a Chateauneuf du Pape winery. We found Nymes and Vaison market days to be very good. Our favorite dinner of the week was probably at La Fontaine, halfway up the hill in old town Vaison. The grounds of the house were very nice with its own vineyard. The owner, Phyllis, was easy to work with. Overall, a great trip and I highly recommend anyone considering that area to consider this house and town.

Mas des Arcs, Vaison-la Romaine, Provence, France

Mas des Arcs was exactly as advertised and as the photographs showed: spacious, comfortable, well-equipped, and across the street from a Roman theater. Its location was superb: the town of Vaison, with its Roman ruins and its Medieval section accessible by crossing a 2000 year old Roman bridge, was an easy 5-7 minute walk away. The town is centrally located amidst an abundance of beautiful wine villages and medieval hill towns, hugging the face of large hills. Day trips to places like Orange, Arles, and Avignon are entirely possible and recommended. There are excellent restaurants within the town and in nearby towns, but it is hard to resist the lure of cooking the excellent food products, so readily available, in the well-equipped kitchen. The grounds have a small swimming pool and vineyard and are well-maintained, just in case one would like to "stay home" for a day. But with so much to see and do, that won't be likely. We recommend this property and hope to return to Vaison ourselves..

Fantastic Property - Unique location!

We have come here several times for the same reasons: great location, nice size, wonderfully decorated and supplied, privacy and easy parking. While it can occasionally be noisy due to the amphitheatre across the street, that is also a part of the charm! Very near the heart of Vaison so easy to walk into town while being on the outskirts. A wonderful holiday home- highly recommend it!

Magnificent

My husband and I travel quite a bit and I think the Mas is my all-time favorite destination. It's every bit as beautiful as in the photos and couldn't be any more inviting inside. It's pretty much exactly how I'd want a house in Provence. My favorite activity was sitting on the sun porch drinking the house wine while looking at the vineyard to the front of me and the Roman theater to the left. It's proximity to town is perfect and you can pretty much get away without even needing a car. We bought chicken in town and I made dinner with rosemary, thyme and bay leaves I collected on the property. I can't think of a thing I'd change. Phyllis and Hendon are so thoughtful in every aspect of their home - it's clean, accommodating, contains everything you'd want or need and I can't thank them enough for sharing this gem. Vaison is wonderful. It's small and quiet but with enough to see and do that you don't really even need to leave town. We walked to the neighboring town of Crestet one day which was fabulous and really enjoyed all the Roman ruins. I can't wait to visit again! Melody

A comfortable and well located Provencal lodging

We shared the house with two other couples and had plenty of room. We found it to be comfortable, charming and beautifully located both for touring Provence and exploring the outstanding Roman ruins directly across the street. In fact, it is an ideal spot and we're hoping to return with our family in the near future..

True Provençal living, as if it were your home

We have stayed many times at Mas des Arcs and find it a perfect base for friends and family who want to explore sites in the Vaucluse and beyond. At the same time, it is so close to town--Roman and medieval sites, great food stores, the legendary Tuesday Provençal market, cultural activities--that you can use your car infrequently. Given the many nooks for reading, great professional kitchen stove, swimming pool and view on the Roman theatre and the vineyard, you may not want to wander far, anyway, though we recommend you do! Close to one of the roads out of town, the house is nonetheless quiet at night because all bedrooms but one are in the back, and the sound of the occasional summer concert in the Roman theatre is a small price to play for gazing on this amazing 1st century vestige, now restored, across the street. One caveat is that because of changing levels and steep stairs this is not a house for people with limited mobility or toddlers unless attended. In sum, if you want a unpretentious, comfortable house that accommodates a fair number of people and feels like home, not a rental property, this is a lovely place to stay.

Escape to France

This is a lovely home in Vaison La Romaine. It is in the Cote de Rhone region which is delightful, and the town is charming. The marvelous Roman ruins and market day each week make this a special destination. The house is a short walk to the center of town which makes visiting so easy. The house is wonderful with a pool, vineyard, lovely antiques and the Roman amphitheater across the street. It is a very cozy home and my family and I loved our stay. Even my fussy 10-year old said she wants to return there next summer. No higher praise is possible, believe me. The housekeeper was very helpful, and the home definitely met my expectations. I kept the details of the house a secret from my family and they were are smiles when we arrived. Great memories were made by all, and I highly recommend this charming farmhouse.
