Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions. Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted under the reviews section a little further down on this page, or you can click the rates tab above. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks!

****PLEASE READ*** : We request that our guests leave the cabin in good rental condition for the next occupants. This means a basic cleaning/ straightening up of the entire cabin, leaving it clean and orderly. This also includes bringing your own linens or washing and folding the ones available at the cabin. We provide a comprehensive list of check-out procedures that are easy to follow. This allows for earlier check-in times and later check-out times adding many extra hours to enjoy yourselves, as well as helping us keep our costs and our renter fees down. So far we're happy to say there have been very few problems and we maintain a 5 star rating on short, WE HAVE GREAT GUESTS (most of whom are repeats) who understand, appreciate and desire a true cabin experience, and treat the cabin as they would their own home.

You having a great time at High Lonesome is our number one concern, so it's important to us that you are as aware as possible before you go!

High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway.

This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right across the street at the end of our long, gravel driveway, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. Cornhole and horseshoes are provided, as well as a hammock and even a guitar for fire pit sing-a-longs......(musical talent not provided....but inspiration is guaranteed) In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating.

The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. Once again, it's small, but cozy, so you'd better like the person/people you're staying with...or at least plan on liking them by the time you leave ; ) ..... There's a porch with a great view, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. *Just added* --new deck for totally private sunbathing....or you could eat breakfast, lunch or dinner there too. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only..... we're thinking of adding an outdoor shower, but feel free to use the hose for now! In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games. Usually the kids like to be upstairs, but they're welcome to pitch a tent and sleep outside if they're brave!

Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind.

About Robb

We have been visiting the Virginia Blue Ridge mountains for over 30 years and have always dreamed of owning a place here. We have a deep love for nature, art and music, so we wanted something semi-rustic with a down to earth, 'blend in with the surroundings' feel. Also something that offered complete privacy.

Robb purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Robb chose Tyro

While we have enjoyed staying at many different types of beautiful places, from very luxurious 'cabin-style' homes with every possible amenity, to some of the cabin 'communities', (places where there isn't as much privacy as sometimes advertised) we immediately fell in love with the peaceful seclusion and tranquility that 'High Lonesome' offered. While sitting privately on 20 acres on the mountainside, it is surrounded by national forests and steep slopes of private land assuring that it will always remain secluded.

What makes this cabin unique

It's location is also ideal. Far enough away from the more 'touristy' areas of the mountains yet close enough to get to them if you desire. The only possible issue for some will be the steepness of the gravel drive, but the new driveway is in and working out well. For us, a small price to pay for the seclusion and privacy that comes along with it. While every stay in this beautiful area is a fantastic one, what we offer at High Lonesome is location....and if you are seeking a truly private, peaceful getaway with post card views and more stars than you'll see at a will love it!

Fantanstic Mountain Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had planned a trip back in March which had to be cancelled so we were very excited to finally be able to make it up to High Lonesome. What a great place! Sitting atop a mountain, the cabin has beautiful views and tons of privacy. The cabin is small, but perfect for 1-2 couples or a small family. All the modern conveniences make the stay comfortable and stress-free. Most of all, you can tell that the owners take pride in what they've built and have a true love for the surrounding area.

During our stay, we hiked Crabtree Falls (just down the street) and visited Devil's Backbone and Wild Wolf breweries - the rest of the time we relaxed by the fire, listened to music on the cabin's surround sound system (a nice modern touch) and watched the snow storm cover the mountains outside.

Two recommendations - first, make sure you bring a stocked cooler, prepared to cook your meals in the cabin. We spent a little too much time in the car making trips to restaurants or grocery stores - everything (at least what we found) was 20-40 minutes away so this added up. Second, use Robb's directions to the cabin - we used GPS and again spent more time in the car than we needed.

Overall a special cabin in a great location. We hope to make HLC an annual destination and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Absolutely charming and comfortable cabin on a hilltop with breathtaking views !

  • 5 of 5

Hi lonesome is a beautiful place to stay. Take the owners cautions about the drive-up seriously a four-wheel-drive is definitely required. Once you arrive you will be charmed by this cabin! It’s well set up and very comfortable, important to note that too with the beds are upstairs via spiral staircase. Overall a real winner and we were definitely stay again !

Great to be BACK AGAIN!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most relaxing three days we have had all year. It was very cold so nothing else to do but stay in, build a fire and just be lazy. Thank you so much again Robb and Sally for letting us enjoy one of our most favorite places. Our dogs enjoyed being lazy with us. Our big day out was a stop at both Dollar General and Family Dollar in Lovingston which is a dream come true for me...hahaha.....We hope to get back soon.

Thank you so much again!!

Quaint, secluded and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The cabin itself is in great shape. The bed (on the main level) was very comfortable. The bathroom was clean and the washer and dryer worked well. We didn't utilize all the amenities but for a smaller location it has several offerings (outside deck, fire pit, hammock). I would absolutely stay here again. I would heed the owners recommendation that you access the cabin with a 4WD vehicle.

The only "knocks" or "cons" I would say about the cabin:

During the rental process I did not see any information about having to bring our own bed linens and that renters are responsible for cleaning the cabin. This info was provided after paying in full. I could have missed this information when researching and, honestly, it wasn't a big deal at all. I just wished I had known prior to renting.

If you need wifi and a lot of bandwidth this place is likely not for you. Surfing the web is fine but there is a limit to how much you can use (I believe this is noted in the description too)

Not really a con as I am a fan of nature and it certainly abounds at High Lonesome but I think potential tenants should be aware that there were a significant amount of bees on the premises. They were absolutely harmless while we were there, however, if you have a fear or an allergy to bees you may want to take this into consideration. The bees themselves were smaller than your standard bee (mind you, I am not a bee expert) and if you leave them alone they leave you alone (beyond mild curiosity) as they flew across the property.

Again, I would have no qualms whatsoever about staying here again and appreciated the opportunity to stay here for the time we did.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the good words, 5 star review and also the constructive criticism. I do have to point out a few errors for future guests who have never stayed who may be reading this review, though. 1) The first response we send on vrbo clearly lays out the self-cleanup process, as does the second paragraph on the vrbo listing….under PLEASE READ, directly below the REQUIREMENT (not recommendation) of four wheel drive vehicles. (including "bring your own linens or wash and fold those that are provided") It is also a part of the contract which must be digitally signed in order to rent, stating you have read it in it’s entirety and agree to the terms, then again on the FAQ’s page after payment is made. So, it’s mentioned 3 times before you pay and once after. Apologies if you missed it but we’re not sneaking it in….it’s very clearly stated and must be agreed to prior to booking. 2) The wifi part is mentioned under details on the vrbo site as “dial-up speed”, and then again in the FAQ, and it states that if "wifi is a priority for your stay we do not guarantee it’s speed or reliability." The crappy satellite wifi that we do have is quite expensive and it’s the best we can do given the mountain location. 3) This year there have been a significant amount of bees in the mountains for various reasons. A BIG plus for the orchards. We also mention mountain pests in the contract and the FAQ, and we do our best to control the ones we can…..but….it is the mountains, so nature wins. I have worked in and around them for 7 years now and have never been stung, even when mowing, but if bees or bugs freak you out or you’re allergic, then you should be aware that they do exist on our mountain. I mean no disrespect to the guest who posted this, and thank you for still giving us a 5 star review, but I want to stress that we do go out of our way to make all these things clear prior to your stay, and we have no desire to mislead anyone. It is important to read ALL the info that we provide on the site, in the emails and in the contract BEFORE your stay. We appreciate you taking great care of the cabin… Thanks! Robb
