**3D Tour just added! Scroll down to photos and click the 3D tour link....SUPERCOOL!**

Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions. Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted under the reviews section a little further down on this page, or you can click the rates tab above. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks!

****PLEASE READ*** : We request that our guests leave the cabin in good rental condition for the next occupants. This means a basic cleaning/ straightening up of the entire cabin, leaving it clean and orderly. This also includes bringing your own linens or washing and folding the ones available at the cabin. We provide a comprehensive list of check-out procedures that are easy to follow. This allows for earlier check-in times and later check-out times adding many extra hours to enjoy yourselves, as well as helping us keep our costs and our renter fees down. So far we're happy to say there have been very few problems and we maintain a 5 star rating on VRBO......in short, WE HAVE GREAT GUESTS (most of whom are repeats) who understand, appreciate and desire a true cabin experience, and treat the cabin as they would their own home.

You having a great time at High Lonesome is our number one concern, so it's important to us that you are as aware as possible before you go!

High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway.

***FOUR-WHEEL/ ALL WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED***

This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right across the street at the end of our long, gravel driveway, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. Cornhole and horseshoes are provided, as well as a hammock and even a guitar for fire pit sing-a-longs......(musical talent not provided....but inspiration is guaranteed) In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating.

The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. Once again, it's small, but cozy, so you'd better like the person/people you're staying with...or at least plan on liking them by the time you leave ; ) ..... There's a porch with a great view, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. *Just added* --new deck for totally private sunbathing....or you could eat breakfast, lunch or dinner there too. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only..... we're thinking of adding an outdoor shower, but feel free to use the hose for now! In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games. Usually the kids like to be upstairs, but they're welcome to pitch a tent and sleep outside if they're brave!

Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind.

About Robb

We have been visiting the Virginia Blue Ridge mountains for over 30 years and have always dreamed of owning a place here. We have a deep love for nature, art and music, so we wanted something semi-rustic with a down to earth, 'blend in with the surroundings' feel. Also something that offered complete privacy.

Robb purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Robb chose Central Virginia

While we have enjoyed staying at many different types of beautiful places, from very luxurious 'cabin-style' homes with every possible amenity, to some of the cabin 'communities', (places where there isn't as much privacy as sometimes advertised) we immediately fell in love with the peaceful seclusion and tranquility that 'High Lonesome' offered. While sitting privately on 20 acres on the mountainside, it is surrounded by national forests and steep slopes of private land assuring that it will always remain secluded.

What makes this cabin unique

It's location is also ideal. Far enough away from the more 'touristy' areas of the mountains yet close enough to get to them if you desire. The only possible issue for some will be the steepness of the gravel drive, but the new driveway is in and working out well. For us, a small price to pay for the seclusion and privacy that comes along with it. While every stay in this beautiful area is a fantastic one, what we offer at High Lonesome is location....and if you are seeking a truly private, peaceful getaway with post card views and more stars than you'll see at a planetarium....you will love it!

Fantanstic Mountain Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had planned a trip back in March which had to be cancelled so we were very excited to finally be able to make it up to High Lonesome. What a great place! Sitting atop a mountain, the cabin has beautiful views and tons of privacy. The cabin is small, but perfect for 1-2 couples or a small family. All the modern conveniences make the stay comfortable and stress-free. Most of all, you can tell that the owners take pride in what they've built and have a true love for the surrounding area.

During our stay, we hiked Crabtree Falls (just down the street) and visited Devil's Backbone and Wild Wolf breweries - the rest of the time we relaxed by the fire, listened to music on the cabin's surround sound system (a nice modern touch) and watched the snow storm cover the mountains outside.

Two recommendations - first, make sure you bring a stocked cooler, prepared to cook your meals in the cabin. We spent a little too much time in the car making trips to restaurants or grocery stores - everything (at least what we found) was 20-40 minutes away so this added up. Second, use Robb's directions to the cabin - we used GPS and again spent more time in the car than we needed.

Overall a special cabin in a great location. We hope to make HLC an annual destination and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Glad you guys made it this time. You've described your experience very well, and we appreciate that as we're so biased it's good to hear other people's reactions and how they share their experience. Thanks for the tips for future guests, and especially thank you for the referrals.

Beautiful cabin tucked away in Shenandoah

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was lovely, modern but still rustic feeling. We were there in March and the wood stove was great for keeping the place warm. Plenty of activities nearby including the AT. The driveway is no problem as long as you have AWD/4WD. No cell service but wifi works fine. Make sure to bring all of the food/clothes/etc you will need - some things are provided but generally bring what you will need.

Second stay - second season

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay here at HLC and we may have loved it more this time than we did the first. Andrew turned 30 and I couldnt think of a better way to celebrate than by staying in this peaceful solitude. The rains were heavy, but that left us with a spectacular show at Crabtree Falls. The driveway did reveal some loose gravel after the rains, but that was to be expected- it just made things a bit more slick going down. We are excited to come back in the fall and experience our third season at HLC.

Great cabin getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my wife stayed @ HLC in the beginning of April 2017 and loved every minute of it. This place has it all. If you like campfires, nature, great breweries, hiking, fishing and just a place to go and get away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life, then this is the place for you. The owners are very nice and accommodating and have thought of everything you could possibly think of when building a super cabin. We loved it there so much we just booked it again for a week this summer. Thanks again HLC and see you soon.

Your friends;

Gary & Lyndsay

Pictures don't do this "cabin" justice

  • 5 of 5

I would better describe this as a "luxury cabin." The space is extremely well used and it includes all the comforts of home (wi-fi internet, sat TV, full size fridge) plus all the perks of a cabin (fire pit, great views, secluded location). There was plenty of space with room to spare for my wife and I. We also commented that we could (and hope to soon) bring our 2 elementary school aged kids here for a vacation as there is plenty of room for them too.

The hiking in the area is amazing. We did two days of hiking and then rewarded ourselves with wine/beer tastings on the third day. You can probably find 50 great hikes and 20 great wineries/breweries within 30 minutes of this house which is impressive because of how secluded it feels. We also took in the D-Day Memorial in Bedford (45 mins away) which was extremely impressive and located in what has to be one of the friendliest places on earth.

The owners lay everything out to maximize your stay with plenty of pre-trip information and in-cabin notes/labels.

Best part of all.... my boss tried to call me but I didn't even get a missed call because of the lack of cell reception! The owner does provide a free phone usage for the call you do want to get.

A wonderful getaway - a perfectly appointed cozy cabin

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway to High Lonesome Cabin. The cabin was charming, clean, and stocked with everything you could possibly need (and yet forgot to bring) :) The driveway is a bit steep and curvy, but our Subaru Forester handled it with no problem. I loved all the different places to sit and relax and the nooks available to enjoy yourself: the firepit, the outdoor fire/grill by the back deck, the front porch with a cup of coffee (or wine).... all perfect places to enjoy the serenity of your surroundings. The views cannot be beat.
