About Bill UpNorth...

In 1994 I relocated from a busy Metro area to beautiful Leelanau County with the dream of providing couples and families with clean and comfortable lodging that was affordable.

Being an 'Innkeeper' and seeing smiles on our guests faces year after year is very rewarding to us, especially when you hear a child ask their parents 'can we come back to the Cottage next year?'

Bill UpNorth... purchased this chateau / country house in 1994

Why Bill UpNorth... chose Northwest

We are situated in the heart of one of the most magnificent areas. When I found our 'Hobby Farm' included was what once was a 100+ year-old Granary. I visualized a comfy Country Guesthouse for travelers in Spring, Summer & Fall that was centered in our magnificent Leelanau County.

After a complete renovation and more than 18-months of hard work, LEELANAU COUNTRY COTTAGE accommodated their first guests receiving many compliments.

We have since welcomed Tourists locally and far away, Winery Touring guests, many bicycle enthusiasts and even folks from Europe wishing to see the splendor of our area.

Folks from all around bring their bicycles to enjoy riding on The Leelanau Trail which is inter-connected to the many TART Trails that run through our region. You can be a casual rider or an avid cyclist and find the scenery and winding Trail is breathtaking, pleasant and maintained for everyone's use.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We are close to 9+ Wineries and Tasting Rooms, immediately adjacent to the fresh pavement of THE LEELANAU TRAIL and just minutes away from 'postcard perfect' freshwater beaches.

We WILL re-book with alternative visiting dates upon 'reasonable' notice. While we strive for efficiency, IF we make a mistake in any reservation, we will be liable for amounts that we received as a prepaid deposit only. We will make every effort to re-book your stay with alternative dates at no additional charge.

Something for Everyone!

What's not to like about this clean, comfortable, beautifully renovated historic farmhouse? It's located close to wineries, restaurants, shopping, beaches and golf courses, yet when you are "home" you can still experience all the privacy you desire. Cyclists will love the Leelanau/TART Trail, a 17-mile paved trail connecting Suttons Bay to Traverse City. If you don't have bikes, rental bikes are available in Suttons Bay. Be sure to check out Hop Lot Brewing Company. Got kids? A visit to Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum is well worth the drive to Northport. Bill is a wonderful host. He welcomed us warmly and made us feel special. We even got to meet his delightful, hard-working (HA!) cats.

Owner's Response: Greetings Again! Your family was a true pleasure to have as guests. AMAZING to have two younger generation guys that could care less about 'being online'! For us, we would rather 'be outdoors'... instead of 'being online'. You and yours are always welcome here and yes, the hospitality will continue as always. Good to see folks enjoying the Trail too. The convenience of having it right here to use is a 'plus' for residents and guests alike. Again... thank you for the pleasant conversations! GREAT to meet you all too! My best to you, Bill UpNorth...

Early Summer on the Leelanau

Peaceful property and home. Convenient location, just south of Suttons Bay, and right on the TART (Traverse Area Recreation Trail) bike trail. Spent three full days exploring the lovely Leelanau Peninsula, including Northport, Suttons Bay, Glen Arbor.

The stay was great!

  • 5 of 5

The place we stayed in was very well taken care of. It was a good halfway point between traverse city and a lot of the places around the upper part of Michigan, such as Leland and Suttons Bay.

Bill was great, he greeted us in person when we got there, he had all sorts of good information for things to do around the place. He directed us to a terrific restaurant in Leland call The Cove, which was terrific. He also had some great suggestions as for Wineries to try out on the way up to the old mission lighthouse, along with a lot of additional things to check out while around Traverse city.

For people with bikes, there's a really nice paved trail that runs very close to the property.

The only reason I knocked off a star (if I could, I'd only knock off half a star) is because of the internet. We were a little disappointed by the fact that the internet didn't work. Bill did explain that they were installing fiber optic in the area and that was impacting the internet service, so I understand there wasn't much he could do. There was cable to occupy the evenings, but still it was a bit disappointing.

With the internet, it would have been perfect! Thanks again for everything Bill!

Owner's Response: Good to hear from you! Thank you for your positive input too. Yes... I am very sorry that the utility Company decided to introduce fiber optic cabling, but I really have no control over this either even if I wish that I did! In the future that utility should be a huge upgrade. And just remember too... this area did NOT get electricity until 1934 when the 'Rural Electrification Act' was passed... so fiber optics really is a huge step forward! Aside from that utility... you folks were great to see. I always enjoy providing tips of 'things to see & do'. Thanks for being such good guests. Wishing you a good Autumn too! Bill UpNorth...

Wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very nice, quiet, clean, comfortable and in an area where it was close to the things we wanted to do. We kayaked the Platte River, went to Sleeping Bear Dunes, took a bike ride on the TART trail, that was spectacular. We even took in a Steve Miller Band concert at Interlochen. We were greeted when we got to the cottage and Bill had all kinds of information for us and gave great recommendations on eateries, which we took advantage of. Sutton's Bay has some really great bar n grills. We even took the time to have a fire in the fire pit two nights under the stars and the moon. Can't get better than that. I would recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to stay in this area.

Owner's Response: You two were great to converse with! I also am happy that you found the concert at Interlochen to be a good event for you. I try to get into there once a year too and it is always worth the time. Come back anytime... and as always bring your bikes! My best to you both, Bill UpNorth...

This cottage is well maintained and very clean. The location is great! The bike path is at the end of the driveway and everything from wineries to breweries, distilleries, beaches, marinas, sand dunes, shopping, and restaurants are all within a short drive from the cottage. Thank you Bill for your hospitality and your dining recommendations. We hope to see you again next year!
