About the property

Lodge, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 20)

Trough Creek Laurel Lodge is a beautiful five bedroom and three bath mountain home built on 2.25 acres and available for your family vacation, family reunion, or small church retreat. The lodge was designed and built by Judd and Susan Buckwalter and their children in 2011. It was important to them that the design of the lodge would provide a classic rustic experience where multiple families could vacation together, making new memories and strengthening relationships. Planning your vacation is effortless as the lodge is located only several minutes from Tatman Run boat launch and swim area on Raystown Lake, and Trough Creek State Park.

The lodge is a traditional stick built home with cypress wood siding on the outside and knotty pine tongue and groove boards on the interior walls. The ceiling height is 25' to the exposed hemlock ridgepole and rafters creating an extraordinary open lodge feeling. The main living area boasts an 8' foot wide stone fireplace, dining table and living room seating for twelve, and fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher. The lodge will sleep up to twenty people. There are five bedrooms consisting of eight full size beds and six single size bunks. For your entertainment we have provided a brand new oak pool table by Heirloom Billards in Strasburg, Pa, foosball table, ping pong table, high style hickory card table, and 46' flat screen television with DVD player and a variety of DVD's (no cable). For your convenience a washer and dryer are provided.

Raystown lake is an 8,000 acre lake. Surrounding it are picnic areas, beaches, boat launches, campgrounds, trails, hunting, fishing, marina, concession stands, etc

About The Owner

Judd is a Marriage and Family Counselor and a Counseling Professor at a Bible College. Susan is a homemaker who also does insurance billing at Judd's counseling practice. They have four children, two dogs and a cat.

The Owner purchased this lodge in 2011

Why The Owner chose James Creek

Family is very important to the Buckwalters. Their purpose in building the Lodge was for their own extended family to have a large enough place to enjoy some time together in the future. It was also important to them that other families would be blessed to have a place to meet as well. The Buckwalter's also had a need for a place to provide marriage and pre-marital retreats. Originally they were just looking for wooded land. Finding land so close to Raystown lake was just an added blessing.

What makes this lodge unique

Enjoy your morning cup of coffee on the back porch in the rockers or on the porch swing. If you don't feel like taking a short drive to the lake, the waterpark, or Trough Creek State Park. You can always stay at the lodge and hike on one of the many trails within walking distance. One trail leads to the top of the mountain where you will see a breathtaking view of the lake. A short hike behind the lodge will take you to a beautiful creek where the young at heart can explore with the provided bucket and nets. Inside the lodge you can enjoy a game of pool, pingpong, or foosball. A variety of dvd's and a large screen tv are provided with plenty of seating for a large group. In the evening you can sit in the Adirondack chairs around the fire pit behind the lodge and make smores. We have found that Raystown lake and Trough Creek State Park encompass much of the same beauty we have enjoyed over the years at some of our favorite vacation spots in the Smokies and at Lake Gaston, but all this enjoyment and relaxation is much closer.

Great location for weekend retreat

  • 5 of 5

It is a beautiful house and well maintained, the kitchen as everything you could need for a week or weekend in the woods. All the rooms were comfortable and the large great room with the large fireplace made for a wonderful place to gather. A large table for everyone to sit around made meal time a "family" like experience. The outside fire pit was large with plenty of chairs to sit around and roast marshmallows or just sit and talk around the fire. There is plenty of hiking and finding our way to the top of the mountain where there is a cross overlooking the lake was a special walk in the woods. Two different areas for playing with pool, ping pong and foosball allows for plenty of activities at night and on rainy days. This is just a great location and house for a family reunion or a small group retreat. Thanks for opening up your house, we look forward to making this an annual event.

The perfect back drop for a perfect weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Our daughters are scattered and with miles between us all, and their growing families it's hard to get together. My husband and I decided this year our Christmas gift would be a weekend in a cabin and time spent with each other. We couldn't have asked for better accommodations! The 16 of us fit perfectly and plenty to do, even when it was cold and rainy. We're definitely booking again!!

Great place for large groups with awesome amenities!

  • 5 of 5

The house was fantastic for our group. We could all sit around the large table, there was a great fireplace, the kitchen was a good size and was well stocked, the pool and ping pong tables were lots of fun, and the beds nice and comfortable! Susan and Judd were very helpful with a few small issues we had and seemed very nice over the phone. We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely go back!

Probably the best designed vacation home I've ever seen.

  • 5 of 5

It's hard for me to add meaningfully to the years of overwhelmingly positive reviews you can read here -- honestly, they're pretty much right about all of it. This property is a gem.

What I'll say is that unlike a lot of vacation homes I've stayed in, everything about the lodge really *worked*. All of the bathrooms and the kitchen actually vented outside (so, taking showers or cooking a stew didn't steam everyone). The central air actually propagated very well throughout the property -- not the usual "2nd floor is an oven while the first feels like the north pole". Thoughtful chandelier-style lighting and ceiling fans were absolutely everywhere (including the centerpiece deck / porch); and, I never had to hunt for a power outlet when I needed one. The "summer camp" theme is strong throughout the property, and made the place feel so much more like I'd gotten away from my city home -- the pictures simply don't do the place justice. Windows are placed strategically throughout so that you're never spiritually far from the pleasantly woodsy setting, and the tall vaulted ceiling was both visually handsome, and a treat for the ears in the rain. The layout of the property was very conducive to making spaces for people to get together and talk or play, while leaving plenty of room for some quiet reading when a bit more solitude was wanted. We honestly never missed the lack of Cable TV -- which is an endorsement all by itself. The kitchen was surprisingly well stocked and had room for two to comfortably work, and the dishwasher was a life-saver that did a better job than mine at home. About the only thing I really missed during our stay was a tub for soaking after a long day's hike, but it's hard to complain when there were 3 very nice showers and plentiful hot water.

We're all very much looking forward to coming back next year!
