Comfort and convenience wrapped up in a lovely package!

  • 5 of 5

This little jewel of a place was a delight to stay in. It is located conveniently close to downtown but in a quiet residential area. The cottage was obviously designed with great thought and attention to detail - a luxuriously sized walk-in shower, beautiful cedar-lined closets and dresser, and a full, well-appointed kitchen. Our host Sarah was terrific - we'll be back!

a restful stay in a lovely place

We stay at Hannah's House whenever we're in Ashland. Sarah and Shady are warm and excellent hosts, the property is comfortable and central to what we like to visit in Ashland.

Some pluses, some minuses...

  • 2 of 5

While the inside of Hanna's House is beautiful and well-kept, the owner left some nice perks (like beer!), and the location couldn't have been better in terms of what we wanted to do in Ashland, having no private outdoor space was an issue for us. True, you can see some chairs in the picture, but what you don't (or I didn't!) realize is that those chairs directly face the owner's house/backyard. We felt like we were in the way. And not just in the way of the owners. There was someone there painting the owner's house and listening to a radio right outside several of the days, so even if there was room for us to hang out, we would have been right in his space and forced to listen to his radio. On the other hand, if you are totally fine staying inside with the windows closed the entire time, you will probably be more than happy with the property. Another issue was the air conditioning. During our time in Ashland it was incredibly hot, and we could not sleep without the air conditioning on. However, it is a window unit right next to the bed, and it sounded like we were in an aircraft hanger while the a/c was working.

To sum up: the cottage itself is beautiful and well-appointed, the location is awesome, but we felt as if we didn't have our own outdoor space and did not get a good night's sleep due to the loudness of the a/c (and I'm talking six nights in a row). Perhaps a winter visit would be better for this property.

Owner's Response: The little porch was put in to accommodate the needs of our mother, the Hanna of "Hanna's House" who originally owned the cottage. We did share the family backyard with her when she lived there, and there is really no way to change that to accommodate the needs of guests who would prefer more outside private space. Please ask about that when you inquire about a booking if that is important to you. However, please do not feel as though you are ever in our way! We love to have guests in our backyard and look forward to chatting if that is what you want to do. If not, it is easy to avoid us as we do not spend much time out there in the common space, routine maintenance excepted. If there is ever any issue that is detracting from your enjoyment of your vacation, please bring it to our attention and we will do everything within our power to make necessary changes to address this. We do often have a hot couple of weeks of summer in Ashland and the AC does need to run most of the day in that case. We are able to open our windows virtually every night after midnight, however, as the nice cool breezes let us turn off our own AC in the Big House. It is rare that this isn't the case.

Well equipped and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd time staying at Hanna's House. It is right downtown just steps away from EVERYTHING! We love having our own little house--living room, bedroom, full kitchen. It's all new and clean with many nice touches. They include coffee and a coffee maker, a few snacks, nice comfy bed with good linens. We bought yummy pastries at the bakery up the street the night before so we could enjoy our morning coffee before getting dressed and heading out. They even have blankets you can take with you to the outdoor theatre on chilly nights. The only drawback is there is no private outdoor area, just a couple of chairs sitting facing the main house. But that isn't a big deal. We will definitely be back on our next trip to Ashland.
