A stone throw south of the Austin City Limits, this cabin is situated in 2.5 wooded acres. While not in the class of a bnb, it is comfy, private and quiet. The land is inhabited by deer, raccoon, fox, owls, lizards and butterflies. There is an old stone well filled by an aquifer (legend states the well was built by Ben McCullough; the civil war hero). A large back yard is used for walks, bonfires and golfing/batting balls. Lounge in the dappled sun on the patio near a running pond surrounded with gardens. Prepare a leisurely bar-b-que. Talk late into the night by the fire pit.
This 100+ yr old cabin has been revived and furnished with love. Time seems to stop while soaking in the deep old claw tub filled with endless hot spring water . Drifting to sleep, become aware of crackling in the wood burning stove, a train whistle and the trickling pond. Breakfast choices are street tacos or pecans?
Its possible you'll be tempted to stay all day. However, the center of Austin or San Marcos, with music, swimming, fishing and kayaking are just 15-25 minutes from this retreat. (Circuit of the Americas is 18 miles through country roads.)

About Tamara Trager
I'm a semi retired pediatric social worker. I grew up around the states and in south east asia. Went to college in Conneticut, Mexico, on World Campus Afloat and finally years later, with lots of gaps for traveling, graduated at the University of Texas in Austin. After my two sons were successfully launched; one's an elite athlete and fireman and the other an aspiring physician assistant, I began renovating the property as a nature preserve and guest house. I have now successfully hosted 100 plus guests and have expanded my exposure in hopes of enjoying an ever growing variety of guests. I love hosting travelers and focus on making sure your travels are as pleasurably memorable as mine have been.
Tamara Trager purchased this Cabin in 2002
Why Tamara Trager chose Manchaca
As a child, I always fantasized living in an old wooden home with lots of windows in a picturesque setting; the types often seen in the Grimm's fairy tale pictures. When I was ready to buy, I only looked at one home, one not usually on the market, a home typical in the 30's in Austin but now in a large wooded area just outside the southern city limits. As I walked onto the property my heart said 'this is a grandmother's home!' and I was sold. Now I garden endlessly with the goal of attracting birds, butterflies and all the small creatures seeking a haven. After all the traveling, I've found my home and I am eager to share this haven with others.
What makes this Cabin unique
I enjoy the fireflies and crickets, late night fires on the patio by the pond, enticing birds and humming birds to nest nearby, and, watching the fawns frolic. A moment later, I can spontaneously leave my retreat to join friends in town to enjoy Austin's great fare and Central Texas's wonderful rivers, all within minutes from my home.

A cozy cottage with a genuine care-taker.
This was a perfect property for our needs: visiting our nearby Austin family, having a comfortable bed and enough "kitchen" for coffee and treats which were microwavable. There was a lovely sense of seclusion, and Breathe Deeply's hostess, Tamara, is both thoughtful and caring. When we visit Austin next, odds are that we'll check to see that this cabin is available.
We decided to come to Austin for a quick trip as my husband was doing some work up there. I found this place last minute. The cabin has everything you need : WIFI, coffee, tea, water, microwave, toaster and a mini fridge. Tamara is an amazing host- she will prepare a fire for you, bring you breakfast... pretty much anything you need she will either help you get it or go get it for you. One thing to beware of the cabin is a little older and it does have a certain mustyness that adds to the elcletic vibe of the place. My allergies were pretty bad while staying there BUT - my husband was fine.
Rural getaway perfect for R&R, but still close to everything.
We stayed July 2nd - July 5th. What a wonderful and relaxing three days! Loved the fire pit area and patio for outside lounging and the cabin has everything you would need for your stay. Tamara was a wonderful hostess and pays attention to all the little details. Breakfast tacos personally delivered when you are ready to eat lunch/brunch and she even shared some wonderful homemade yogurt with us. I would stay again in a heartbeat...maybe when it's not so hot, although the wonderful trees provided plenty of shade.
Fantastic experience - best host we've had
We stayed at Breathe Deeply for 4 nights and, while the accommodations were stellar, Tamara really made our visit special.
This is really a perfect mix of VRBO and B&B - private space with A/C, full bath, wi-fi, kitchenette and a comfy bed AND Tamara is available by text at almost any time to help with whatever you need. She was great (and honest) with local recommendations about where to eat. She greeted us upon our arrival with a coffee cake, leaves the patio bug candles lit each night for you, is willing to stack a fire pit if you desire, and got us breakfast burritos one morning! We didn't want to run the AC all day while we were gone if we didn't need to, but then realized that may have been a bad choice... we texted her to ask if we'd made the wrong decision and she turned it on for us before we got home.
The location is great - right near everything (just a few minutes off major roads) but feels rural - it's quiet and rustic and we spent most evenings and mornings on the mostly private patio.
We couldn't have asked for more and will certainly return next time we need a place to stay in the Austin area.
Thanks so much for the effort it took to write an informative review! I'm also glad you enjoyed the stay. I enjoy hosting and it was a pleasure to host you both. Look forward to having you again some time.
I could go on and on about how perfect this little cottage is! We stayed from Tues-Saturday and we did a lot of sight seeing but Tamara was the PERFECT guest!!! And it's located in a very nice relaxing cozy spot! If you're looking for peace and quiet after a full day of adventure I highly recommend this cottage!
We liked the place.... A++
We definitely coming back to this place.
Years ago when people spoke about Austin they typically raved about the music. That's just the beginning of what they're saying these days. Austin is also home to a wonderful ballet, world-class museums, the US Grand Prix, the X games, and beautiful outdoor spaces with outrageous bar b que! You can just as easily spend your morning paddling the lake as you can strolling through a celebrated history museum. From fishing to theater to international racing; time your visit and you'll be able to experience your passion. Then retreat to your secluded cabin nestled in 3 acres of trees, butterfly gardens and an open field where deer graze. After exploring, this cabin emphasizes leisurely relaxation around a fire near the pond. 'Breathe Deeply, you are Here'
