MAGICAL LAKE SUPERIOR VIEWS AT THIS 5 STAR COTTAGE! UPSCALE EXPERIENCE!

'What a view!' Will be your first words when you enter Highlander Cottage.

Located just 30 minutes from Thunder Bay and a little over an hour from Grand Marais, Minnesota this cottage is the perfect base 'home' for you to explore from and return to each day. NOTE: Canadian guests please use HomeAway.ca for Canadian pricing.

Custom built with granite countertops, hardwood floors and leather furnishings, Highlander cottage, open year around, offers it's guests an arts and crafts style with a little post and beam thrown in. The inspiration for the one floor plus loft 1800 square foot layout was the panoramic view of Lake Superior...none other like it ! I designed the floor plan with an open living room/ kitchen concept incorporating a small cozy reading loft when you want to get away. The bedrooms are designed with privacy in mind. They are at opposite ends of the cottage and each has it's own bathroom with ample ceramic tile showers. For those bath aficionados the master has "ye ole" clawfoot tub.

The living room has a large gas fireplace to keep you warm and cozy while you look through all the windows to the lake. Off the living room is a large covered porch so rain or shine you can be outside enjoying the view while lounging on the patio furniture from Lazy Boy! The second side deck off the kitchen is convenient for grilling on the BBQ . This deck offers a great setting to dine with plenty of seating for a nice group gathering.

The kitchen is fully equipped for those of us who love to cook....and bake! If there is something missing I will make sure you have it! This is a working kitchen designed to minimize steps and enjoy the wonderful view while you are preparing.

The cottage is located in a very private setting. It is a large property offering a camp fire area up by the cottage and a nature trail down to the ledge rock edge of Lake Superior where you can sit and ponder life. With the Mink Mountains literally out your back door one can take the many hiking trails from easy to challenging. One of my favorites is the short walk to Picnic Point where a picnic lunch is a must! During the winter months these trails are wonderful for snow shoes. For those who like breaking trail... X country skiing is the best. Whether it be through the woods or on the lake when frozen over....a challenge is always waiting! Highlander Cottage is a silent sports persons dream destination any time of the year. Whether you are a reader, photographer, artist, writer, silent sports enthusiast, or a tourist that likes to be off the beaten path this is for you. Oh by the way the cottage DOES have WIFI so you will always be ...connected.

The cottage was everything we were looking for and more. We loved the views, wonderful set up, and thoughtful details. Bonzi was a delight to work with. Retreat and Recharge

We have stayed in a lot of places, but nothing compares to Highlander Cottage! The views of Lake Superior are second to none and the quiet and peaceful setting is exactly what we needed. The host, Bonzi, is kind and thoughtful. She made us feel welcome as if we were family. If you are looking to slow down and get away, this is your place!

Another Perfect Stay!

Highlander Cottage is perfect - immaculate and well stocked, plenty of space and yet intimate. The view is breathtaking. The location is peaceful, but there are all kinds of things to do nearby (I know, because I read about them in the diaries while I was snuggled into a comfortable chair overlooking the lake😉). Piece of Heaven

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this secluded piece of heaven. The hike to picnic point was absolutely fantastic and far exceeded our expectations. The house was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. If coming from the states please bring groceries as it is quite a trek to get to the closest grocery store about 40-50 minutes or so. In a word-WOW! This is one of the most beautiful VRBO's I have ever stayed in. There truly is magic as you walk through the door of Highlander Cottage. The majestic view of Lake Superior as it unfolds when crossing the threshold is incredible. And the cottage itself is so thoughtfully crafted and designed. I am in awe of the workmanship and attention to detail. The decor speaks of great love, a little whimsy and appreciation for the beauty of the surrounding nature and love of family. All provide an opportunity to relax/rejuvenate and, for a little while, escape some of the harsher realities and uncertainties of the world around us.Bonzi is an incredible host-a welcoming gift basket & note, great resources for hikes/restaurants/activities in the area, etc. But mostly, her engaging, creative and genuine personality shine and add to the magic of the experience.

Absolutely a beautiful spot

The pictures of this house and the views shown on VRBO don’t do it justice. We sat for hours with our coffee and starred out at the lake watching as the fog would conceal and then reveal the islands that dotted the scene. Fishing in Sturgeon Bay, which is very close, never failed to yield northern Pike with only 4 casts and yes, we saw bear, eagles, and some sort of Crane. We’ll definitely be back.

Perfect Getaway

This Lake Superior cottage is one of the best we've stayed at! First, Bonzi, our host, was responsive, helpful, and a delight to work with. She went above and beyond to welcome us, make us feel at home, and give us possible day trip itineraries, which we appreciated! Additionally, the cottage was beautiful, clean, and provided the perfect setting for relaxation (wait until you see the views!!!). We loved the covered porch with comfy chairs, perfect for morning coffee and dinner after a day of activity. The Mink Mountain trail head was within walking distance of the cabin - a great hike with beautiful views. Many wonderful local activities are within reasonable driving distance to this cottage, so we were never short of possible activities - Kakabeka Falls, Historic Fort William, Thunder Oaks Cheese Farm, The Bakeshop on Boundary, Blue Point Amethyst Mine, and more! We hope to be back very soon. We miss the cottage already!

This cottage truly is magical. All the amenities matched the descriptions and Bonzi was quick to answer any questions. This made planning and preparing super easy. We didn’t want for anything during our stay. Well, we did want something… we wanted to stay longer! The nearby hiking trails were the perfect length to walk multiple times so you could see something new each trip. The ledger rock shoreline was easily accessible from the cottage as it was also from the hiking trails. If hiking isn’t your thing, the furniture comfortable inside and out. The back porch is a special place for a quiet morning/evening to enjoy the loons and sound of the waves. The yard even big enough for a picnic blanket (just mind Bonzi’s advice regarding wildlife). We experienced a different lake “character” each day which really rounded out the experience. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience or a more sincerely kind host. It is definitely a place you won’t forget and dream of your trip back.

A Beautiful Hidden Gem on Lake Superior

Absolutely beautiful! Pictures didn't do it justice! No small touch was missed! Bonzi has a beautiful home on the lake and is hands on with everything! She came over and met us and went over things and gave us wonderful recommendations: Kakabeka Falls Farmers Market, Niva's Diner, Finnport Finnish Shop etc! All were fabulous! We loved sitting on the deck watching the lake, especially at sunset! Everything you could possibly need was in the cottage! We can't wait to go back!

Magical is exactly right! From the moment we pulled in the driveway, we were in awe. Highlander Cottage is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Bonzi was an absolute joy to work with and so very kind and helpful. All the amenties you could ask for are provided...a well stocked kitchen, super comfy bed, and a claw foot tub to die for. The views from the online pics are beautiful but just wait until you step through the front door. WOW! We spent so many hours just sitting on the back deck in the quietness enjoying the sounds of Lake Superior. We saw bald eagles and momma bear and cubs came to forage the wild raspberries. Mink Mountain hiking is literally right out the door and a quick walk up the street. We were so sad to leave and cannot wait to go back. Make sure you visit The Tiny Giftshop for some of Bonzi's beautiful artwork. Ready for the next trip North!

This is the second year my sister and I stayed @ Highland Cottage and left knowing we would book again for next year. As the descriptor indicates, the cottage is truly magical. From the moment we entered, there is such a feeling of peace, calm, warmth, beauty, appreciation of those who have shaped our lives that is so incredibly special and restorative. The cottage, Bonzi with her melodic tinkle of a laugh/smile that radiates throughout and Cheekies are truly an experience like non other. Truly an incredible week.

If you enjoy watching the sunrise while having your morning coffee (suggest bringing your own water), a comfortable outdoor lounge area for viewing the rugged shores of Lake Superior (closest LCBO is Thunder Bay so plan ahead), a well equipped kitchen for meal preparation (no local restaurants or stores so be prepared and bring groceries with you), and comfortable beds for a good night's rest (after enjoying a scenic hike up Mink Mtn), then Highlander Cottage (very clean and comfortable) should be on your list of destinations. Your host, Bonzi, is very timely in responding to email inquiries and provides a convenient arrival and departure procedure.

Slice of Heaven

We were looking to get away and unplug. Highlander Cottage more than delivered. From the moment we walked into see a picture perfect panoramic view, we were blown away. While we did a lot of sight seeing while we were there it was hard to drag ourselves away from the peace and beauty the Cottage and surrounding area had to offer. Weekend Getaway

My husband and I had the most incredible getaway weekend at the Highlander Cottage! The views of Lake Superior are stunning and the cottage is gorgeous. Bonzi greeted us briefly to make sure we had everything we needed and then was available for any issues that we may have encountered, which we didn't. The cottage was very secluded and had all of the amenities that we needed for a relaxing time away from it all. We did a little bit of hiking on the nearby trails. Highly recommend the trail to Picnic point if you want a rock shelf spot to reflect and the Mink Mountain overlook trail (note there is elevation) for an awesome view. We were greeted each night by Cheekies, a red fox, who gets an egg for her cuteness. Without a doubt I would recommend this cottage and we will definitely be returning again!! Thanks for sharing your gorgeous home with us, Bonzi!

Having grown up in northern Wisconsin on a family resort I guess I have the hospitality business in my blood. I love being able to share Highlander Cottage as it gives others a chance to experience this enchanting area. I have owned property in the Thunder Bay, Mink Mountain area now for 17 years. I fell in love the minute I drove over the mountain and saw the view of the lake....awe struck! I have also grown to love my Canadian neighbors. We have a community here of magnificent, adventurous people who really appreciate Lake Superior and all it has to offer.

My previous property at Mink Mountain- SUNRISE COTTAGE_ was in the Vacation Rental Pool for 3 years. I had a 5 star rating and met some FABULOUS people. I am anticipating more of the same goodness with Highlander Cottage. See you soon!

I walked onto this property in the winter and I could not get over the view. Truly unbelievable ! I knew this was the place to build my Highlander Cottage so, a love affair ensued...oh and it's on Lake Superior too !

What makes this property unique

Highlander Cottage is in a rather private area of Mink Mountain so the animals love it here. I have bear, deer, fox, ducks, eagles...on and on....visit me through out the year. So, you never know what you are going to encounter when you look out the windows to the lake or walk out the back door that faces the mountains!!!
