5 full bedroom suites, infinity-edge saltwater pool, panoramic ocean views
Hacienda Punta Indio is the perfect Costa Rican retreat/adventure vacation! Here you can enjoy comfortable accommodations and your own private infinity-edge pool while immersing yourself in a spectacular jungle setting. The spacious 5-bedroom house and 30-foot salt-water pool is perfect for multiple families, family reunions, or even yoga retreats.
The house is all on one level - it has 5 bedroom/bathroom suites, a kitchen, living room,, dining room, laundry room, and even an air-conditioned walk-in pantry. With a total of 6 bathrooms, your group will have more than enough privacy. This house is located up on a hillside overlooking the bay of Samara and is accesible on all-paved-roads; there is no need for a 4x4. A regular car is fine. The quiet end of Samara beach (near Hideaway Hotel) is a 10-minute walk.
Each of the 5 bedroom suites has an en-suite bathhroom, a king-size bed, remote-controlled air conditioning, two bedside tables with reading lamps, plenty of storage space. In addition, each bedroom suite has its own private front door (with its own key). All bedrooms (except one) have a back door which opens up onto a shaded deck area - perfect for enjoying the warm morning sunshine and lush green views of the mango grove. The pool is especially refreshing because it contains salt-water and only a tiny amount of chlorine, resulting in almost zero chlorine smell. It is very easy to spend hours just relaxing in the pool (from sun-up to sun-down) and enjoy watching the incoming and outgoing tides of beautiful Samara Bay, the greenery in the surrounding hillsides, and the evening lights along Samara's beachfront.
The house sits in the center of a large peninsula called Punta Indio; this peninsula divides the two horseshoe-shaped beaches of Carrillo and Samara, two of Costa Rica's favourite beaches. From the pool you can see all of Samara Beach but other views are seen throughout the property: north towards the town of Samara, south overlooking the open ocean, west to the small island of Isla Chora (where the kayaks head out in the morning) nad east to gorgeous palm-lined Playa Carrillo.
So go ahead and let the kids make noise and enjoy having NO neigbours nearby! Relax in your own private infinity-edge pool, go for morning nature walks throughout the property, and explore the 3 beaches: Samara, Carrillo, or Bahia Media Luna, a private beach at the north side of the peninsula. All this, while still being an 8-10 minute drive from Samara's town-center.
Whether you have spent the day at the beach or in town, it is a real treat to return to the comforts of the Hacienda, its pool, and its complete privacy. The kitchen is fully outfitted for gourmet meals and the outdoor grill makes it very easy to enjoy dining al fresco. A private chef is available, ask for details.
Please note that this is not 5-star accommodation. The house was designed to be very comfortable and functional. Its peaceful, natural surroundings are well suited to those on a yoga retreat, nature photographers, bird-watchers, people seeking an out-of-the-way spot who like to explore on their own or a group who is looking for something different.
While the house does not have central air-conditioning, each bedroom has remote controlled air-conditioning and the living room/dining rooms have overhead ceiling fans. These, along with 3 sets of sliding wooden doors, create good air-flow. When these wooden doors are open, the living space is literally doubled and the refreshing outside ocean breezes can flow through.
Hacienda Punta Indio is a great place for young families to hang out in. Its large covered porch provides plenty of shade throughout the day and its very large dining room is centrally located, with plenty of seating. Comfy sofas, several lounge chairs and hammocks all provide good places for book-lovers. One of the many benefits is that because there are no houses nearby, the sky is dark enough for great stargazing.
Because of the huge property size, there is an opportunity to see a lot of wildlife here. Monkeys are always somewhere on the property - either in trees by the carport, in the jungle below the pool and other times in the mango grove along the back of the house. Iguanas are frequently seen scooting into culverts near the carport. And at night, you will hear and see small owls. It is truly a nature-lover's paradise. Because of the property's higher elevation, there are noticeably fewer mosquitoes here than down at beach-level restaurants in the evening.
A car is recommended, but not necessary. Taxis are plentiful, reliable and inexpensive. Ask me for a list of our favourite taxi drivers.

About Mary-Ellen Meyers, Vancouver, Canada
My husband and I co-own this property together with 5 other couples - most of whom are Canadians. Since 1995, when our partners, Tim & Isabel, built the house and swimming pool, we have vacationed here with our extended families, filling all 5 bedrooms. Three of the couples had small children which is why the swimming pool has a shallow 'beach end' - we made it specifically with our own toddlers in mind. The Punta Indio property is extremely private and peaceful and it's common to see families of monkeys and a huge variety of birds that live in this lush tropical 'nature reserve'. Some of our partners live full-time in Costa Rica and look after the house, and our long-time caretakers Flory and Jorge are invaluable as they look after the day-to-day operation of the house. My husband and I live in Vancouver, Canada, with our 2 daughters, a Portuguese water dog named Rico and our Maine Coon cat, Lily. I enjoy very much looking after the rental of Hacienda Punta Indio and sharing this house with other families. For some people it is their first introduction to Samara. For other families, Hacienda Punta Indio is their 'happy place' where they return for 10 days every winter to escape the Canadian winter. Samara is easy to fall in love with.

Why Mary-Ellen Meyers, Vancouver, Canada chose Sámara
We chose this property because of its incredibly beautiful views. Hacienda Punta Indio is the only house on a huge, 60-acre forested peninsula that separates 2 of Costa Rica's most pristine and beautiful beaches. Both Samara Beach and Carrillo Beach are horse-shoe shaped; this peninsula is the piece of land that separates them. Trails lead to views of both beaches and the house is situated so that, from the swimming pool deck, you look over to the main beach of Samara which is lined with restaurants and bars. Both beaches are incredibly beautiful and the town of Samara is small and friendly. There is a relaxed atmosphere, plus there are dozens of great activities, amenities, excellent restaurants, and just a 2 hour drive from the Liberia Airport. The peninsula on which the house is located has many trails, 6 of which lead to awesome terraces, some with views of Samara, some of Carrillo, one overlooking the tiny island called Isla Chora, and some overlooking the open ocean. The property comprises over 60 acres which is like a private wildlife reserve - it is home to many families of howler monkeys, green iguanas, and a huge variety of birds. On the far side of the property, there is a third private beach called Bahia Media Luna (half-moon bay) - only accessible through this property, by kayak, or by walking around the rocky, craggy point.
What makes this House unique
Complete Privacy: your own salt-water, infinity-edge pool on 60 acres of jungle paradise, practically a nature reserve. From your doorstep, you can explore many walking paths, watch monkeys in their natural habitat, see and hear a variety of birds, watch iguanas, even see a coati (similar to a lemur). The 5 private bedroom suites give everyone his or her own space. The lack of nearby lights makes for fabulous star-gazing at night. Punta Indio has a trusted care-taker couple to help you should you need any assistance with the pool, a/c, or room safe. The beach house is on 60 acres of private jungle yet next to two of the country's prettiest beaches, and all the amenities you could ask for in two nice small towns.

A beautiful, restful retreat for our family!
Hacienda Punta Indio provided an ideal Christmas retreat for our family of 5 couples. Everything was exactly as described; the photos really do it justice.
Driving into Samara for errands or to enjoy the array of restaurants and activities was easy and interesting. Mary Ellen’s suggestions for groceries and places to visit were a real help. Over 10 days family members went scuba diving (twice), snorkeling, horseback riding, zip lining (WingNuts was terrific), learned to surf, played on the two beaches, took a flight in a gyrocopter, and one afternoon we all headed off to a coffee plantation. Mostly, though, we were able to relax in the pool-side hammocks.
The kitchen is well equipped and easy to use. There are two dining areas, great for after-dark games as well as our meals together. Everything was spotless, and Flory and Jorge were available to help and answer questions.
On the grounds are iguanas, geckos, a wide variety of birds and a small family of howler monkeys. Evening visits from raccoons were very entertaining. It is a pleasant walk to Samara and Carillo beaches.
Thanks Mary Ellen for making our first visit to Costa Rica so easy. We can’t wait to come back!
We love this place!
This is the third time we've stayed at the house and it get's better each time. We had a group of 5 adults and 4 teenagers in one place for 10 days and we never felt crowded at the house. The setup is perfect for larger groups with all the bedrooms having private entrances and en suite baths. The large infinity pool provided a great gathering spot during the heat of mid-day. When the kids got restless we sent them on hikes throughout the grounds of the house. With all the trails and the "hidden" beach they had plenty of space to explore.
Jorge and Flory do a great job of keeping the house pristine and are there to help within minutes of calling. The house has been updated recently with new appliances that make cooking in the open concept kitchen a breeze. The view from the kitchen makes doing dishes a treat instead of a chore.
Thank you Mary-Ellen for being so informative and responsive to our many questions. We are already planning next year's trip back to Samara.
Beautiful location and home with great views near the beach!
A group of 9 of us (2 couples and 5 kids aged 15, 13, 12, 9, and 3) spent the better part of 10 days at Hacienda Punta Indio and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great to have so many bedrooms so that everyone could spread out, but then a big enough common area where we could all hang out.
We had howler monkeys serenade us a bunch of mornings and got to see a couple of pairs of scarlet macaws flying out over the beach.
We went fishing and had great success with Captain Frank, did the zip line tours (Wingnuts was great for everyone, including the 3 year old), and a two day trip to Monteverde and Arenal (~4 hour drive).
The Pali in town was useful and we enjoyed the bakery and the beach overall. Gusto Beach was a great lunch spot.
On the property we enjoyed the pool (and even a visiting coati) and did hike down to the private beach one day - it is not at all difficult. That is where we found some of the best shells of the trip.
We would definitely go back (are already discussing it). Mary Ellen was great to work with, as were Jorge and Flory!
We love Samara, and loved this place. It is a little bit outside of town, which we weren't sure about, but we ended up really liking the location. The drive back to town and the Samara beach is about 10 minutes, and about the same to Playa Carillo. It's extremely private, with only this home on the property.
The home is a great layout, with the bedrooms all along one side, opening to the patio and pool, and the kitchen and living area also open to the patio. The house is not brand new, and doesn't have high end appliances, etc., but is very classic Tico and charming. We had 3 families staying together and the space was perfect for us. The patio has views of the ocean and beach, as well as the surrounding woods on the peninsula. There were lots of animals on the property which we enjoyed. We saw monkeys a couple of times, as well as lots of iguanas, some bats, an owl, and many different species of birds. The caretakers were very friendly and helpful, and responded quickly whenever we called them.
We loved this place -- it is the real unspoiled Costa Rica, and we will definitely stay here again!
Another great trip
This is the second time we've stayed at Punto Indio in the last year and it just keeps getting better. This is the best location in the area for privacy and is still extremely convenient to town. The size of the home makes it easy for large groups to find places to relax without tripping all over each other. We had a party of 8 had plenty of room in the house and pool. Driving through the gate on the long private drive is like stepping into your own secluded oasis. We'll be back again!
Second time visitor
We love the town, the quiet, the pool and hammocks (very relaxing). The rooms are private and the property has a lot of walks on the grounds (with hills and views). I recommend this place!
Punta Indio is a peninsula of land approximately 150 acres in size - the rental property consists of about 60 acres and is the only structure on the property. It is located half-way between Playa Samara and Playa Carrillo, and has great views of both beaches. It is essentially an untouched nature reserve: a wooded forest that is home to many types of birds, families of howler monkeys, and iguanas (the smaller species called gorobos). From your own private pool, you can see gorgeous Playa Samara, and the surrounding jungle mountainside. Punta Indio is a peninsula that separates 2 very large beaches, so they are both within easy walking distance. From the beach house, you can walk a short ways and have a stunning view of Playa Carrillo on the other side. Or take a longer walk and overlook the small islet known as Isla Chora and Playa Samara from a different angle. There paths are fairly well-maintained though caution is always advised. For nature lovers, the spectacular views and glimpses of wildlife are immensely enjoyable. This region is a photographer's dream: lush forest, rugged coastline. It is a short drive to the town of Samara where you can enjoy many great restaurants, activities, boutiques and stores, and all the amenities you could want. But it is always a treat to come back and enjoy your completely private hideaway. Samara is a very cute town with a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. You can have lunch at many restaurants with your table right on the beach. You can rent horses, boogie-boards (for $2/day), surf boards, ATV's, bicycles. You can go ocean- kayaking, take surfing lessons, or go zip-lining with WingNuts Canopy Tours, truly a world-class tour.
