About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Woodbox is our home in Playa Junquillal, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The home was developed by a locally renowned architect and has been uniquely designed to blend into the local flora.

Upon entering the grounds you will be entering a paradise within a paradise. The tranquil rock garden leads directly to a set of glass doors into the home. The home has been designed with sweeping glass windows and doors throughout, providing plenty of sunlight in all the living areas.

The four bedrooms are set up as follows:

-Bedroom one is on the first floor of the home and has a luxurious queen-size bed. The room has its own private terrace and en-suite bathroom. (There is an additional half-bath located on the first floor)

-Bedroom two is located on the second floor of the home and it also has both a king-size bed and its own en-suite bathroom

-Bedroom three is on the second floor and has two queen-size beds. This room has its own bathroom and is ideal for either a kids room or for a group of friends!

-The master bedroom encompasses the entire third floor, along with its own en-suite bathroom and private balcony. The room is absolutely stunning and has views of the Pacific Ocean!

The first floor is a central gathering area for all members of your family or group. The gourmet kitchen has been thoughtfully laid out and includes a five-burner stove top as well as a convection oven. A special bonus is the wine refrigerator for the oenophiles! The dining area has a large, rectangular table with benches to accommodate up to ten people eating at the same time. The family area has a comfortable seating arrangement along with a 46' Sony LED/LCD flat-panel television and Samsung stereo system. Bring your iPod or IPhone to plug into the stereo!

Just off the central gathering area is another set of glass doors leading out to the pool area. The entire group will end up hanging out here, as many of your meals will be prepared on the outdoor barbeque and also because the pool is located in this area. The pool area also has an outdoor shower to for a quick rinse either before going into the pool, or after. For a quick meal, the Iguanazul is just across the street.

Across the road is the beach and the Pacific Ocean. Swimming, surfing, snorkeling are all activities which can be pursued here and more than likely there won't be anyone else around!

Recreational activities abound in Costa Rica and there are many things to do either within a short drive, or for the more adventuresome the volcanoes are a few hours drive away. Please contact us for tours, atv rides, zip lines, and horseback riding.

About Michael Mettler

We are an active family who has enjoyed travelling to Costa Rica for many years. We have worked in the hospitality industry for our entire careers and understand what our guests want when travelling to this very special part of the world.

Michael Mettler purchased this house in 2012

Why Michael Mettler chose Cantón Santa Cruz

We have had a dream for many years to own a home in Costa Rica. After many visits to different parts of the country, we landed on this very special home on Costa Rica's Gold Coast. The home is far enough away from everything that you feel like you are getting away from it all, yet there are amenities within a short walk or drive from the home.

What makes this house unique

Our home is the ideal location for an unforgettable vacation in Costa Rica. World-class (famous!) surfing is only steps away. Fishing, horseback riding, ATV riding, mountain biking, surfing, SUP, kayaks, and zip lines are a short drive away. Hiking are right outside the doors of the home. The Pacific Ocean is steps away and world-class surfing spots are located all around the home.

Amazing House in the Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Woodbox from January 28 to February 4, 2017. The house is set up perfectly for our party of 8 (4 couples), and there was even room to add a few more. With 4 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms every couple had their own place to sleep and own bathroom for the week. It made it really easy on everyone to not have to worry about sharing space. The staff keeps the entire three stories in clean, top notch shape. The pool and grounds outside are kept to resort level standards. The pool was cleaned every morning and if there was even a leaf out of place, the gardener was on top of it. We experienced some windy conditions that were blowing the patio furniture cushions around and the gardener was very clever in how he zip-tied them to the furniture to prevent the constant need to chase cushions.

The Kitchen has everything you need (pots, pans, dishes, blender, coffee maker, etc.) to make your own meals if you would like and there is plenty of refrigerator/freezer space. And if you need anything, Fabrice the house manager is always just a few minutes away to help. He arranged in-house massages and the release of baby sea turtles for our group and they were two highlights of the trip. The location of the home makes it ideal for relaxation and adventure. The house is about 30 minutes from Tamarindo and Santa Cruz – so you can easily visit the larger cities without having to deal with the crowds and busyness of tourists, commerce, etc. You are not bothered by anyone in the area and you are within 10 minutes of five different Pacific beaches and surfing (two that are within walking distance from the house). The local restaurants in the area have excellent food so if you don’t want to cook, no problem.

This is our second time staying in this house (also Nov. 2014), and after each visit I would not hesitate to recommend this location to anyone considering a stay in Costa Rica. You cannot go wrong with a home that comes fully furnished (including surf boards, boogie boards, snorkel gear), has that attention to detail when it comes to cleanliness and the grounds and is perfectly situated to enjoy the beach, zip-lining or whatever additional Costa Rican adventure you may want to experience.

Paradise in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Wood Box immensely- beautiful home, exquisite grounds and pool, excellent concierge service. Although very private, there are ample restaurants nearby as well as activities: surfing, boogie boarding, and Tamarindo a 25min drive away. We highly recommend Casa Wood Box.

Two families enjoyed their Easter week escape at Woodbox

  • 5 of 5

Our family and friends enjoyed the house and region. The house is well stocked as listed and well situated although the hotel across the street has sadly closed making the dining options on foot a little further afield than advertised. We still managed to eat at Lo(n)chitos which was fantastic, Guacamaya, Cafe Playa Negra, Con-Tiki Pizza and Lola's. The ceviche at Cafe Playa Negra and the drinks at Lola's were the best of many good meals out. We also enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen and bbqing outdoors. We also had a fantastic meal with Pascal and Camille. The beaches both north to Playa Blanca and around the sunset point (in low tide) to Playa Negra as well as South to Junquillal were fantastic, rugged but walkable and largely empty especially of tourists. We enjoyed the "booze cruise" on the Blue Dolphin though getting out of Tamarindo at sunset reminded us of why we chose a more remote location! We also had a fun day trip exploring the volcanic features of Rincon de la Vieja national park and, because we were caught unaware that the waterfall trail closed at noon, an unexpected stopover on the way home at Palo Verde to see thousands of birds in the lagoon. The four bedroom home offered plenty of shared and private space for two families with very comfortable and modern furniture beds, linens, towels and accessories. The primary housekeeper was great and the back-up provided for Thursday and Friday of Easter week was fine. There were some minor issues with the house which were a bit annoying given the price point (i.e., wifi very slow and intermittent, 3rd floor AC not quite strong enough, guy who knew alarm code in kitchen at 6:30am one morning who just seemed to take out recycling then disappear which was odd, no replacement of soap, toilet paper or shampoo in bathrooms for 7 people staying 8 nights, toilet in 1st floor half bath continually sticks so have to take top off after every use to get cap to close and stop water running, extensive pile of recycling behind house in which a family of skunks have nested...). Overall, the house was extremely comfortable, well-equipped and well situated just a short walk from beautiful beaches. We enjoyed the isolation, the stunning beaches and the proximity to numerous casual dining options.

Great Place, but Not Very Safe...

  • 1 of 5

We stayed at the Woodbox for five nights in late June/early July 2017. Although the place was very nice, our stay was ruined by a break-in to the property on the first night.

We arrived in the afternoon and were shown around the place by one of the property managers. The home has a fence surrounding the property, although it is not particularly high in places. We really liked the home and amenities. While being shown around we asked the property manager whether we should lock our things up while we are out (we had done so at another property we had stayed at in Costa Rica). She responded that "Well, I don't even lock home here in Junquillal, it is a very safe place". There is an alarm on the home, but no instructions were given for its use, and given the confidence of the property manager, we didn't even think to press for having it turned on.

The first night (actually around 4 AM), someone broke the kitchen window, and went through all of our things on the main floor (we were sleeping upstairs behind closed doors). They took over $1000 in cash plus three laptops, a messenger bag and two pairs of expensive headphones. Fortunately they were careful to leave our passports and credit cards, so we did not become completely stranded.

The property manager was helpful the next day when we told him what had happened. He set up the alarm system and had a board placed over the broken window. But our stay had already been ruined and we slept uncomfortably for the next four nights. When I suggested that the owner might want to compensate us in some way, he offered to buy us dinner, which seemed meager compensation for our loss.

We also had to spend the better part of a day in Santa Cruz to get a police report so that we could get at least some compensation from our homeowners.

We were told that there was a private security guard that patrolled the home (along with two other properties in the area). Unfortunately he didn't see anything. There were also cameras in place around the outside of the home, but we were told that they wouldn't pick up the thief even though one of them was pointing straight at the kitchen window.

For anyone considering staying at the Woodbox in the future: lock up your stuff in the safe (I would suggest this even when you are sleeping) and make sure that they give you instructions on how to use the alarm.

We did feel fortunate that we didn't hear the thief and go downstairs as that could have ended something even more dire...

Owner's Response: Dave: We are sorry for your loss. Thank you for the feedback and additional information about what transpired. In the five years we have owned our Costa Rica home, neither we nor any of our previous guests have experienced anything like your loss. As you mentioned, we have built in various levels of preventive measures to ensure incidents like this do not occur. There are also additional levels of precautions built into the home which were not mentioned or utilized. We hope the behavior of one person does not tarnish your image of an otherwise wonderful country. Hopefully you'll give Costa Rica another opportunity to shine and we certainly would like to see you back. Michael and Laura Mettler

Family vacation 2017

  • 5 of 5

The house was wonderful for our family of 8. We even got to see howler monkeys in the trees at the house! Loved it!!

We enjoyed:

*endless hours in the pool

*the river boat cruise - got to see white faced monkeys, crocodiles, & the lunch was fabulous!

*zip lining - the guides were fun & made you feel secure. My 85 year old mother loved it!

*Camille & Pascal's cooking was perfect for the first night we arrived plus the breakfast package. We had them come back to make us a delicious dinner along with a birthday treat for my mom's 85th bday. Really enjoyed their cooking & their company.

Fabrice organized everything from tours to shuttle to & from the airport. Everyone he set us up with was very curious, on time, spoke good English.

The only thing that would have made it a little better would have been to know up front what we had to pay for in cash. We expected to pay for a lot of above with credit card & would have been better prepared if we knew before coming how much cash was going to be needed.

Beautiful home and location!

  • 5 of 5

The Woodbox is awesome! Three families stayed with four kids and we enjoyed each day. The beach is nearby and the snorkeling was great. Fabrice was kind and helpful and even hooked up the house with new beach chairs. We would have loved to stay even longer but, alas, responsibility called us home.

Wildlife abounds in this part of the country!! Howler monkeys travel through this area in the evening hours. Leatherback turtles lay their eggs on Playa Junquillal September - March. Many types of exotic birds nest in this area. Other types of activities are available, including tours of the country, zip lines, horseback riding, atv's, and restaurants/nightlife are a thirty minute jaunt to Tamarindo. There are also secret gems in the area, including local 'sodas' and full-service restaurants serving everything from wonderful local Tico meals to unbelievable (one of the best meals we have ever experienced!) continental cuisine.
