Jungle house review
The house was fine - basic - the description of the house in VRBO should explain a bit more about the condition of the road - disappointed in the meal provided by Maria - drink was orange flavored something and the desert was hostess store bought cup cakes - not what I would expect given the price
We really enjoyed our stay at Rita's cabin, Jungle Escape Belize, in the EcoVillage of Better in Belize ! We stayed for a week and during that time we saw the Howler Monkeys every day( they even roosted in the trees on the property a few times which was an early wake up call!) lots of birds including parrots, tucans and many more we couldn't ID. The jungle setting was just what we wanted.
The cabin itself was as represented on VRBO. It had everything we needed to cook and relax. Lucy, the caretaker, explained to us how the water and power worked and checked in with us every few days to make sure all was going well and to set up any tours we wanted to do. This service I would highly recommend.! The Che Chen Ha cave tour with William was great! He is very knowledgeable and personable. Also, the river pontoon boat tour with Emile was a lot of fun. and the lunch was wonderful.
I would advise people coming to stay to take seriously the 4 wheel drive recommendation. The road from Benque Viejo is about a half hour dirt/rock road, which was ok to drive but the road in the Better in belize village could be a little more exciting without 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive on our rental did not work and the drive in and out was doable, but an adventure!
Thanks again to Rita, Lucy and Marcos for a really memorable stay!

Unique Off the grid stay in the jungle
This experience was like no other. This place is nestled deep in the jungle and completely away from civilization. The cabin is small but contains everything you need for an off the grid jungle adventure. We frequently had coffee or meals on the deck and watched wildlife pass by. A group of howler monkeys were in the tree tops in front of the cabin one night. We did some canoeing and found two groups of nearby waterfalls, with the guiding of our host, Lucy. What a unique place to stay. Rita was so accommodating when our travel plans changed last minute. Make sure you have a 4x4 though, the roads are rough to get into the cabin.
Beautiful Location, Eco friendly.... If you want to call it that...
Beautiful Location, most definitely. But there's a lot that this description doesn't tell you. But lets start with good here...
LUCY, the host... I cannot stress it enough, She and her family were the most amazing people!!! I love them! her cooking is unbelievable!! its a bit pricey(25$US pp), but well worth it in our books. Especially her BANANA bread!!! Highly recommend you ask for this, if you're getting a dinner. Her family also puts on a unbelievable pontoon boat ride that cost 75$ US pp or 90$US with a served Lunch which was amazing!!! Highly recommend that. He was incredibly knowledgeable and Fun, a whole day of amazing! Trust me... Do it. Also, we seen many different wildlife when there- up close and personal! Howler monkeys, crazy spiders, wood peckers, bats, too many to write all out. Now on to the discrepancy-
The road travelling to this location..They tell you to avoid the Coastal Highway, but the Coastal Highway doesn't have anything on the roads travelling to this location. Make sure you have 4 wheel drive, that's about all I have to say. Buy your beer before coming here, as the closest super market is a good 40 min drive. However, there is a really great lady (about 5 mins out on main street leading to the eco village) in a blue building. Its a farm you pass coming in, there's a painting of a man on the outside. She sells beer, and rum...even frozen chicken. but its a bit more expensive, happy to support her business though. The locals are very nice to help guide you to Ritas place. Now, lets talk about this Eco friendly home...If you call running an extremely loud generator to charge the batteries for 2 hours Eco friendly.. Well I just disagree. Not to mention your batteries can barley hold a charge. you run ONE light and you can see it draining the battery. The lights have the illumination of a tea candle... we had to wear head lamps to do anything inside. that was ridiculous. Shower is a mystery! you get 1 min of hot, followed by 1 min of cold. I shower quite quick, but this was not enjoyable. Beds are quite uncomfortable compared to what others say in the reviews. Kitchen is functional... it had a wine bottle opener, so I was happy. I think there could be some changes here, even having several candles that us guest could use would be hugely helpful. There is a mini fridge there, which we brought food and due to the battery situation, you'd have to get up around 6 or 7am and start that loud generator to keep that fridge going.
Clean; right in the midst of the jungle!
Rita was great to work with; even reimbursed me for a night when I didn't think I could get there before dark; Lucy the housekeeper was wonderful and helpful! Loved seeing all the wildlife and the waterfall across the river was breathtaking! An incredible jungle experience!!
Enjoy the mighty Macal River ... take a pontoon boat ride operated by a local Belizean company "La Capitana" and visit 3 fantastic waterfalls, or spend some lazy days just swimming by the river.
Just down the road from our village you can take a horseback riding tour of the mountains and take in the view from the mountain tops. In town (just 10 miles away), take in the Xunantuich mayan ruins, go river tubing, zip lining, or any of the activities offered by local tour companies.

Why Rita M. chose Benque Viejo Del Carmen
Where I live, the winters are long and cold. I have travelled to may countries in the world but had never considered purchasing a vacation property until I found this eco village in Belize. It has taught me the value of conservative off grid living. When I found this eco village I immediate fell in love with the surrounding jungle, natural and beautiful and filled with life with so many things different from my home in Canada.
What makes this Cabin unique
The cabana is nestled into a private one acre lot. Enjoy the natural jungle around you with the modern conveniences within the cabin.
