Why Shell Ostler chose Mariposa

My husband and I met in beautiful Yosemite. When we would visit Yosemite we would stay in Mariposa and fell in love with the town. When the opportunity presented itself we both knew this is where we wanted to live the rest of our lives. The people are extremely friendly, the area is rich with history and you can't beat the beauty of Yosemite.

What makes this studio unique

For a small fee, we offer to stock the place with what you want so you don't need to spend valuable relaxing time shopping groceries.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at the old oak hideaway had everything we needed. A nice, cozy cabin with easy acces to Yosemite. Shell and Dan were really friendly and welcoming. We would definitely recommend this place.

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was from July 10-15 2018

The hideaway has a great location and is close to Yosemite National Park which was the reason for our stay. The cabin was clean and well stocked with anything you may need. Shell, was very friendly and accommodating- she even offered us the use of her personal crockpot which was very nice as it offered us a hot meal to come home to after a long day of hiking. She had the cabin well stocked with variety of very informative information about the area and nearby parks to include maps. The Hideaway does have WIFI which was a big plus! Shell, you are doing a great job, and wouldn't change a thing! We would absolutely stay here again on our next trip to Yosemite Nation Park.

Wonderful place to stay near Yosemite!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place. It was clean, very comfortable, and has everything you may need or want. We were happily surprised to find a cooler, so we could pack food for our daily trips into Yosemite. Shell even had a first aid kit, suntan lotion, and bug spray. It was hot when we visited, but enjoyed sitting out on the deck in the cooler evenings with a glass of wine, listening to the birds and the animals from a nearby farm. The town of Mariposa is small, but offers what you need. Check out the visitors center before you head into the park. They are very friendly and helpful, giving us detailed maps of different trails in Yosemite. I would definetly recomend this place or Shell's larger home to anyone but particularly to families with children. Shell provides books, puzzles, games, movies, and inside and outside toys and equipment to entertain children for hours.

Clean, comfortable beds, huge tv, 1 hour + to Yosemite entrance

  • 2 of 5

Pros: clean, comfortable beds, private-ish, kitchen if needed.

Cons: not super convenient for visiting Yosemite as it’s a long drive to get to the park. Also about 20-30 minutes from Mariposa. Lots of animal noises at dusk and dawn (we wore earplugs so it wasn’t bad). IMO the property is not very attractive. There’s stuff littered throughout like kids toys, equipment, etc., there is another rental about 20 feet from the loft, which could be an issue depending on your situation, there is also a large tent/tarp type camp on the property which is disheveled and strange looking- not sure what it’s for. The rental buildings are worn down looking on the outside. There’s no couch, only straight back chairs and the beds. Stairs up to the loft are uneven, and the railing is wobbly. The shower was ok but no grab bar for safety.

Quiet and cozy

  • 5 of 5

Shell's property was quiet and cozy, with all amenities needed (even had a rice cooker which we really appreciated)! Her dog Dino was extremely friendly and I would really miss seeing that black lab coming up to greet me and say goodbye every single time. It was a little far away from Yosemite (about an hour's drive) but we didn't mind the drive at all, as it was really scenic all the way into the park, and not too far from Mariposa if you needed to make grocery runs. Only downside was my phone had no reception at all (AT&T) but the same goes for the park, and you have wifi on the property so that makes up for it. I would recommend downloading offline maps onto your phone for anyone who's traveling into the area!

Private, wonderfully furnished retreat

  • 5 of 5

This hideaway served as our home base for Yosemite adventures. It offered a private bedroom, kitchen and bathroom all tucked into a woodsy rural area. Shell was an excellent host and made us feel very taken care of.
