A ferry ride away from Tacoma, Seattle, or the Olympic Peninsula, Vashon is a unique rural refuge in a sea of urban development. Located at the center of the east side of the island, KVI Beach House is the perfect location to explore Vashon and is just minutes away from town and nearby bus lines heading to the ferries.
Facing the sun all day long, KVI Beach House is on the bluff overlooking Tramp Harbor and Vashon’s most popular public beach, known to locals as KVI Beach, the heart and soul of Vashon Island. The entrance to this unique beach, protected by King County, is just a two minute walk and Islanders old, young and four-legged come to relax, play, and exercise here in all seasons of the year. For mobility impaired, a 30 second drive to the beachhead. We directly face Mt. Rainier, Maury Island and Tramp Harbor.
For those who are mobility challenged, a ramp can be installed to the house entrance, ADA shower is on the main floor, and an outside packed gravel ramp allows access to the entire wrap around deck, studio/rec room big screen TV and lower outdoor fire pit, picnic, bar and grill area.
We have 3 bedrooms plus a large studio apartment downstairs.
The studio apartment has a small bathroom with shower, open plan living/dining kitchen area, and access to the outside bar and grill, lawn and fire pit area. The studio apartment has a large dining table that can seat 12 more or less. It also has a pull out American Comfort Sleeper Queen bed, two twin click clack beds and a pack and play. The studio apartment can sleep 1 couple, 2 singles, and a baby. There is also a laundry room on this floor. The studio apartment is the entertainment center of the house, and holds a large screen TV, DVD player, Xbox, DVD library, darts, many board games and access to outdoor activities.
In the loft is the King Master and it has a king pillow-top bed, full bath with a Jacuzzi tub/shower. There is a view of Mt Rainier from the loft. The loft master also has twin beds in an alcove, separated by wood screens, in addition to a click clack futon style double bed. There is also a roll away single bed there and a crib. The high ceiling King Master sleeps up to 2 couples, as well as up to 3 singles and a baby. The room has a changing table and crib. More pack and plays are available on the other floors. There are two high chairs and a booster and restaurant-style wooden booster for older children who still need a higher chair.
On the main floor, the Queen Master has an attached bath with a 'Tea for Two' tub and a separate stand up shower. It sleeps one couple and is the most private area.
The Main Floor Bunk Room has vintage WWII Navy bunk beds which are 30'X 80' and a full size bed, sleeping 2 singles and 1 couple. There are many toys here, TV and DVDs for children. Not far down the hall is an ADA accessible bathroom with a large wheelchair accessible shower, or group shower for the kids after a day on the beach.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome. They must stay off beds and furniture and when outside, stay within our yard, not wander in the neighborhood. Dogs think KVI Beach is heaven!
Altogether, the house has 12 separate beds, 5 of which can sleep two persons. For infants there are 2 pac n plays and 1 portable crib, 2 high chairs, 1 booster chair, and 1 high chair that straps to a regular chair.
The outdoor entertaining area includes lawn games, barbecue grill, outdoor bar, large picnic table, child's picnic table, swing, seating for 10, and a large fire pit. There are gardens, sometimes with vegetables and herbs for the guests to harvest.
Guests numbering over eight are charged extra, INCLUDING babies and children, due to linens needed, extra cleaning, diaper/trash extra costs. Parking is limited to 5 spaces, 6 in a squeeze if owner is contacted ahead of time. No large sleeping vans/campers are permitted with guests of guests sleeping in them in the parking spaces, since that expands the number of guests and stresses the septic system and the quiet neighborhood..
In spring, look for seals and the Orca pods who playfully splash through on their pursuit of the salmon runs in the South Sound. Watch as the early daffodils perk up out of the ground in early March. Divers have found the shelf off this beach to be one of the best diving locations in the Sound, and in all seasons you can see dive boats moored offshore, exploring the undersea world which includes spotting the largest octopus in the world. Try your luck at fishing. The Tramp Harbor fishing pier is a ten minute walk or a minute’s drive away, and has a long dock, picnic and honey bucket facilities. You can also surf cast from the beach below our house.
In summer, listen for the high-pitched whistle of the killdeer protecting their eggs laid in the driftwood, pretending to be wounded to get you away from their nests; take note of the rattling chatter of the local population of kingfishers, who like to perch above the trees while the tide comes in. Overhead hear the whistling cries of the bald eagles and the osprey, and watch as they fight each other over dinner from the bounty of Tramp Harbor. Watch out for hummers, too, as they may just want to investigate who is invading their territory.
During the fall, this beach is a bird lover’s paradise, and Audubon walks are common when hundreds of migratory American Widgeons and other water fowl seek safe harbor here. Mallards are yearlong residents, and off shore rare water fowl are common.A spotting scope is set up on the covered porch. You definitely want to bring binoculars. Also, ask about booking a tour from a noted birder in the neighborhood or a boat ride around quartermaster harbor. The captain of the Vashona just wrote the latest book on the history of Vashon, and the tour is historical and geological. Salmon fishing trips are also possible to arrange and some pick you up from KVI beach.Of course be sure to bring a camera.
In winter, sit on the wrap-around deck of the cottage wrapped up in a blanket, look out at the migrating water fowl nosily quacking in the protected salt water stream which ebbs and flows with the tide just beneath your feet. Listen for the loons in the lagoon at night. Owls perch in the tall Douglas firs.Feel the wind and rain on your face as you walk on a mostly deserted beach, watching the waves whip up the sand and driftwood. Relax by the warm fire with a good book and never want for a view of what’s going on in Tramp Harbor.
KVI Beach is also a haven for island children who grow up on this sandy beach, where a small, salt-water inlet becomes a pool for their little boats and floats. The little ones build sand castles and driftwood forts, catch and release hermit crabs and play under the watchful eyes of their parents as the tide comes in and goes out. Sea stars, sand dollars, moon snails, mussels, clams, gooey ducks, sea cucumbers all abound. Islanders enjoy observing the creatures of the sea, and hope that visitors respect the abundant sea life. The older children and teens play beach volleyball, baseball, picnic and at night build fires augmented by the natural phosphorescence in the water of the incoming tide. Adults have a great view of all the activities from atop the covered porch of KVI Beach House.
Dogs love KVI as well, and on weekends, at all times of the year, people walk their dogs, children, and themselves on the easy beach trails that wrap around Point Heyer. Eagles hang out on the tower to the north year round. They can be seen in early morning and early evening getting breakfast and dinner, and have claimed KVI as their own.

About Nancy Bachant
Originally from NYC, we moved to Vashon in 1978. Nancy worked in the Social Services as a VISTA Volunteer on a remote Indian Reservation, teaching convicts college classes at Walla Walla State Penitentiary, and teaching Family Planning at local clinics. Her hobbies include scrapbooking, opera, traveling. Kevin is a consulting environmental geologist. We have a grown son and daughter who love the island and grew up here, and played on KVI Beach when they were children. All of us like to travel, but love to come home to this special place. We have lived on the island since 1978.
Nancy Bachant purchased this House in 2012
Why Nancy Bachant chose Vashon
The beach at KVI is such a special place we wanted to share the experience with others. So when the run down house next door came up for sale, we thought we could conveniently operate a vacation rental, now called the KVI Beach House. We tore down the old house that was there and built this new one as a future retirement home but a vacation rental for now.
What makes this House unique
This is the most popular public beach on the island, where dogs, kids, seniors, birders, locals and tourists all come together to play in the sand and sound. KVI Beach is entertaining year round, from birding in the winter to Stand up paddle boarding and kayaking in the summer.

Nancy did a great job of decorating the house for our Christmas family reunion. Every possible item you might need was provided-from cook ware to games. The views were spectacular and the light uplifting.
Looking forward to booking with Nancy again.
