About Pat and Tod O'Connell
Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching. Tod O'Connell
Pat and Tod O'Connell purchased this House in 2010
Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Essex
The Essex Mountain House was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it and updated the house including wiring and plumbing kitchen and baths while keeping its character. We and many guests are really happy with how it turned out.
What makes this House unique
Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Use the fire pit and BBQ in the summer. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier Park. We're near the Amtrak train platform so there's great train viewing also. This house shown in Great Northern Historical papers.

The Perfect Location
This house is a true gem -- both for its historic significance and its location to Glacier National Park entrances. The setting is lovely, with the backdrop of the Amtrak train running by. The owners were so responsive -- both to questions about the house and to questions about directions to various hikes, etc. The house comes equipped with everything we needed and everything is in excellent condition. Our family, arriving from Colorado, Maine, and Maryland could not have been more pleased. We hope to stay there again!
Great and convenient
What a cute property! The check in was simple, but be sure to know what you're doing before you get there because there is no service in the area. We were able to communicate with the owners on their land line and they were conveniently located to the location in case anything went wrong.
Clean, large enough for a good amount of people and easy to access Izaak Walton Inn and hikes. Great location
Very spacious and clean!!! Large washing machine and dryer and appreciated the laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets that were provided. Tod and Pat were available for questions and are wonderful hosts.
Perfect home away from home
This home was perfect for our Glacier vacation!! It was the perfect central location to the park so we were able to spend time in both sides of the park without too much driving. We took the Amtrak to Essex and were able to pick up a rental vehicle at the Isaac Walton Inn. We could not have asked for things to work out better! Todd even surprised us and met us at the train to take our luggage to the house - even though the house is within very easy walking distance of the train stop. It was a wonderful bonus after a very long trip!! They were very responsive to our needs and helpful in planning our trip activities. Todd even prepared our fire when the wood was running low so all we had to do was light it when we got home one night! Pat's warm chocolate chip cookies were also a wonderful treat at the end of the stay.
We had a multi-generational trip with my parents and our 3 boys (ages 16,14, & 7). This house was ideal for our needs. My mom has MS so has limited mobility. She was able to have all of her needs met in the main floor and our boys loved having their own room with their own TV. It was wonderful to come home to this house and be able to spend time together eating supper or having a fire, or going to our separate spaces if we wanted time away.
This house is exactly as advertised - a beautiful home that is a wonderful piece of history in a perfect location to explore all areas of this amazing park. Todd and Pat went above and beyond to make sure we had the best vacation possible.
A home away from home: Best choice you could make for your stay at Glacier
The house is PERFECT. It is spotlessly clean, charming, and gives a true country feel, with all the comfort of home- perfect for a family gathering, There is a big back yard and the home is equipped with everything you could possibly need.
Perfect location, making it easier to access both the East and West side of the Park.
The owners are the BEST- making the experience complete. You will be warmly received and given good advice and guidance about Glacier. We will never stay anyplace else! We already miss the house,as well as Todd and Pat.
Booking this house will guarantee you an outstanding base from which to visit Glacier National Park. Your family will thank you as soon as they enter the home. There is even an inviting kitchen table to gather around for meals, with an array of spices you wouldn't have otherwise,as well as cook books if you forgot that recipe.....You will easily be able to cook and eat at home.
The beds are very comfortable and there is plenty of room to set up your pack and play if you are bringing a baby.
Weather permitting, you can build a fire in the backyard fire pit. There are picnic tables and plenty of chairs for outdoor enjoyment.
The Essex Mountain House looks like an Irish cottage from the outside. Inside, it is spacious, inviting, and well laid out. You will note the craftsmanship right away. Our children and their spouses came, along with our grand baby, and there was plenty of room for everyone. .
This place is IDEAL! If you are looking for a place to stay, you have hit the jackpot here. We will book this house again in a heartbeat (although we may have made it harder to do so with this glowing review:) This place is just too good not to share. Enjoy your stay here!
Great Family Vacation Home to Explore Glacier
Our family of 6 enjoyed our stay at the Essex Mountain House. This was an affordable option for our family to explore Glacier. Everything was as pictured and described. We appreciated the laundry and made full use of the kitchen and the gas grill outside to cook breakfasts and dinners. Two floors, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, plus a kitchen and family room gave a lot of space for our family to relax after hiking in Glacier. We appreciated the help and suggestions that Tod gave, including letting us borrow Bear Spray for our hikes in Glacier. We also appreciated the homemade cookies from Pat. The trains were present, but if you hike enough in Glacier the day before, you will sleep through most of them!
Spectacular viewing for train enthusiasts. A quarter mile to Glacier Park, and half mile to Great Bear wilderness.
Excellent cross country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Great hiking and sightseeing in the Glacier Park mountains. Area wildlife includes, mountain goats, bear, moose, elk, wolves. Recommend the Skyline trail from Logan Pass. Ask about complimentry cross country ski passes for Izaak Walton trails.
