About Pat and Tod O'Connell

Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Essex

The Essex Mountain House was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it and updated the house including wiring and plumbing kitchen and baths while keeping its character. We and many guests are really happy with how it turned out.

What makes this house unique

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Use the fire pit and BBQ in the summer.

Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier Park. We're near the Amtrak train platform so there's great train viewing also. This house shown in Great Northern Historical papers.

Excellent place and excellent Location

  • 5 of 5

We were so happy we picked this house for our Glacier vacation. The location was perfect for seeing all of the park and was about as centrally located as you can be for Glacier. The house was perfect for us...well equipped kitchen for the meals we wanted to do at home and plenty of space for four or more people. The trains going by was an added bonus! Our experience was that there was little train traffic overnight (or we were too tired from our day to hear them). We would definitely recommend this house. Tod and Pat were very friendly and helpful. Thank you again for allowing us to use your beautiful home and slice of paradise!

Great family accommodation about 30 minutes from Glacier Park Entrance

  • 4 of 5

The is a great place for a family. The only downside is that the trains are frequent and very loud throughout the day and night.

Fun Family Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

This charming house worked well for three generations. We cooked in the kitchen the first night and relaxed around a campfire, explored the next day in Glacier, and ate the second night at Isaak Walton. Everything we needed was provided in the house - even playing cards for a rousing game of "Peaches." Thanks for the fun time.

Thanks Tod and Pat for a great stay in your historic Essex House just south of Glacier National Park! Perfect location between East and West Glacier. Clean, warm, convenient for our family of 7. Like the reviews said, the house is even nicer than the pictures! 2-full baths and laundry on the first floor! Plenty of towels and all the supplies you need for a fun, nature-filled family getaway in the mountains!

Perfect for a visit to Glacier National Park East

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable, attractive house. Four of us stayed there for five days and agreed that it was just right for our purposes. We wanted to see the east side of Glacier and to experience Northern Montana, which is unbelievably spectacular. One of the owners even brought us freshly baked chocolate chip cookies one afternoon! The nearby Izaac Walton Inn's restaurant was a bonus. Their Rainbow Trout Almondine is fabulous! All in all, we had an excellent vacation and this VRBO added greatly to it.
