About Pat and Tod O'Connell

Pat and I moved to Essex MT in 2003. We had both worked in Glacier Park for 4 years in the late 60's and later went to the U of MT in Missoula. We both love the Glacier Park area and moved back here from St. Paul after the kids left the house. They found us shortly thereafter and come out frequently to visit. Pat and I love the mountains and the 4 seasons and enjoy going into Glacier hiking and animal watching.

Why Pat and Tod O'Connell chose Glacier Country

The Essex Mountain House came up for sale in 2010. It was formerly owned by the Great Northern Railroad and used by the roadmaster years ago. It was moved to this site, I'm told, 30 to 40 years ago. We liked the look, layout and history of the place and bought it when it came up for sale. It was in need of TLC so we totally updated the kitchen and bathrooms and did a lot of finish work while retaining the a lot of the old character. We're both really happy with how it turned out.

What makes this house unique

Totally updated large kitchen, laundry and a full bath upstairs and downstairs make this 2 story house great for families and groups. A big yard on a double lot allows plenty of room for bbq's and relaxing on the property. Essex is located half way between East and West Glacier and across the highway from the Walton entrance to Glacier. We're near the Amtrack train platform so there's great train viewing also.

Spectacular viewing for train enthusiasts. A quarter mile to Glacier Park, and half mile to Great Bear wilderness.

Excellent cross country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Great hiking and sightseeing in the Glacier Park mountains. Area wildlife includes, mountain goats, bear, moose, elk, wolves. Recommend the Skyline trail from Logan Pass. Ask about complimentry cross country ski passes for Izaak Walton trails.

Very nice place to stay

The smoke from forest fires dampered our visit, however, the rental was fantastic. The cabin was very clean and had everything you need including a good book to read. The best part of this rental for us was the owner. He lives right down the street and he and his wife couldn't have been more gracious and accommodating. This rental will not disappoint.

The house was very clean with all of the conveniences of home. Owners were very friendly and even baked us cookies. They live a few houses down and were very helpful with any local info.

Very clean and quiet.

Very clean place and quiet. I liked the sound of the trains coming by in the evening. Tod made us feel very welcome. In my opinion there were not any good restaurants close by. Bring your own food and cook it in their nice kitchen.

Across street from Glacier Park for great hiking and sightseeing. Great Cross Country skiing in winter. Groomed cross country trails at nearby hotel with ski pass available for guests at Essex Mountain House.
