About Richard

My family absolutely loves the outdoors and we also live on the Boardman River down stream. We enjoy kayaking, gardening, hiking, and bird watching. We take our two dogs for long hikes on the state land while looking for new exciting finds that the woods have to offer. We are also excited to share this with others who share our passion for the outdoors. This cottage is a unique place!

Richard purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Richard chose Northwest

I purchased this property quite honestly because I have been here most of my life and I have found it to be in one of the best locations in the area. I love the outdoors but like the fact that I can be in Traverse City quickly with a beautiful drive to get there. The wildlife, fresh air, and of course the Boardman river being steps away, well you just can't beat it. I see all types of birds , deer, fox, partridge, well it goes on and on. Truly it has all the flavor of the now well known 'Pure Michigan.' And how about the Fall Colors

What makes this cottage unique

Wildlife including: deer, turkeys, partridge, rabbits, bobcats, and ducks. Birdwatching: Piliated woodpeckers, eagles, hawks, owls, hummingbirds, and orioles. Hiking, fourwheeling, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing. Beautiful view of river. Kayaking, tubing, fishing, and swimming. And lets not forget the fall colors! Also we have the Chery festival in July, the Horse show in July, and the Film festival after that!

Awesome & Relaxing get away

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place to say. It was exactly as described and how the pictures showed. Was a very relaxing and peacefull get away. Richard supplied everything you need and is a great source of knowledge for things to do locally. We took our 1 year old and loved it because during the day we could take her to the beach & Traverse city (very close drive) then at night once she was in bed we could relax by a fire or sit in the hot tub. Great place & great vacation, we will definitely be going back!!

Wonderful time!

  • 5 of 5

I'm really torn about giving this property the excellent review it deserves, and it becoming so popular that we won't be able to reserve the weeks we want, because we can't wait to come back! What a lovely, tranquil, spot, but we had a family event in the area and this place became headquarters. That meant we were way to busy to take full advantage of everything and did not have enough time to take full advantage of the river, the hot tub, and especially, the hammocks and lounge chairs on the decks.

Richard was very attentive to our particular needs and gave us total family

time, but we knew he was always available should we need him.

The cottage itself was comfortable and very well equipped with lots of towels, soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and even laundry detergent for the much appreciated washer and dryer.

Maybe next time, we'll come to TC unannounced so that we can enjoy this lovely spot all by ourselves.

The pictures on this site do not come close to capturing the charm of this wonderful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had such a terrific experience staying at this charming cottage in the woods. We can't say enough wonderful things about the owner, Richard. He was very responsive and really went out of his way to ensure we were having a great time. The cottage has everything you need and more! It is tucked away enough to really enjoy the quiet and beauty of nature in Michigan, yet close to the city and beaches to have some action packed fun. It was just what our busy family needed to reconnect and spend some relaxing time together. The river is crystal clear and the sounds of the river and streams were so entrancing while lying in the hammock just off of the patio. The cottage was very clean and comfortable. The hot tub was also a plus after a long afternoon of kayaking to relax th muscles and unwind. I almost didn't want to give this rave review so we can keep this location all to ourselves, but it would be a shame not to share! We can't wait to return and maybe bring a friend or two. Thank you Richard again for your hospitality and great conversation. Until next time!

Peaceful, relaxing, amazing location private oasis

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed numerous times in Traverse City but never rented a cabin. We came with our younger kids (11, 9 & 5). The drive in was a lush two track leading to the river with a bridge to cross over the river to get to the cabin sitting on the hill. We wished we could've rented longer. Just not enough time to do it all in 2 days. Unfortunately the weather was raining the whole time so we couldn't enjoy all of the amenities that were provided outside (firepit right on the river with numerous chairs, 7 kayaks & 2 large outdoor hammocks) & large deck overlooking the river. However we did enjoy all off the amenities inside. The cabin was very clean, spacious & homey however the decor was very dated. The air conditioning was on but we turned off and used the wood burning stove instead which was all set up to use. Kitchen had all the necessities you would need including oil, coffee filters, coffee maker, dishwasher. Washer/dryer were exceptionally helpful including the soap and dryer sheets to dry our wet cloths from the pontoon boat we rented on Spider Lake. We did use the hot tub located under the umbrella of trees. Beds were Richard met us at arrival and offered to ferry the kayaks for a 4 hour or a 2 hour trip down the river. We were entertained by the TV which offered a dvd player for movies.

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was more than expected. Very clean and had plenty of room for our family of 6. Well all enjoyed it fully , the hot tub was a treat. The location was perfect close to all the local sights and yet secluded, perfect. The fire pit on the river was a nightly ritual s'mores and family time awesome. Highly recommend had an awesome time😊

Way more than expected!

  • 5 of 5

You can't take a picture and capture the awe inspired views from this cabin. There is beauty in every direction. We found the cabin to be very roomy, and clean. We were very pleased with Richards accommodation, of a kayak trip down the river. (this is a "must do") I ranted to my family that this was our most perfect vacation..
