Casa La Paloma - Historic Sonoma, Old World Charm, Great Location

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,500 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

2000 sq. ft home with a beautiful large backyard garden and patio

Step into the spirit of Early California Sonoma by staying at Casa la Paloma – one of Sonoma’s historic homes from the mid 1800s. It has been carefully renovated for comfort, convenience, the maintenance of its historic character and has received awards from the Historic Society. Filled with old world charm of Spanish/Mexican California, it is located right downtown only a block from the Plaza. It’s unique location provides you with the comfortable feeling of being in a neighborhood and the fun of being only a short stroll from the life of the Plaza – walk to the Farmer’s Market, the best restaurants, the historic Sebastiani theater and endless wine tastings. You’ll be pleased you don’t have to drive home!

Casa La Paloma has a lovely spacious backyard with old fruit trees, flowers & a pond with a fountain. Here, you can bar-be-que, have a small family gathering, entertain friends for supper or just relax.

The large Great Room, with it’s original Salt Box architecture, creates a wonderful space with antique Spanish furnishings and charmingly combines the kitchen, dining area with a table for 8 and the living room.

The kitchen has everything you could need for quick meals or a gourmet dinner.

In the old Parlor/Library you can quietly read, watch TV, check your email or send the kids there to play board games.

Off the Great Room you’ll find the Master Bedroom with it’s beautiful eclectic antique furnishings including a queen wrought iron canopied bed, European armoire and French doors which open to the patio. The adjoining spacious Master Bath has been completely remodeled for comfort.

The seconded downstairs Bedroom is in the heart of the older part of the house. It has a queen brass bed and is romantic, cozy and charming. Here, the spirit of the building welcomes you warmly.

Upstairs, in the older part of the house, there are 2 more bedrooms.

Sunny and sweet, the room on the right has a touch of French antique décor, a full size bed and lots of closet space.

The bedroom on the left, also sunny and warm, has a full brass bed and a wrought iron single. Perhaps this is the best room for the children or a couple with a child.

There is no bathroom upstairs in this part of the old historic house.

Just downstairs off the kitchen, there is a second small newly remodeled bathroom with a corner shower which is shared with the downstairs bedroom.

The spaciousness, lovely garden and great location make Casa La Paloma a perfect location for special occasions – a place for the wedding friends and family to stay, host out of town guests who have come for a conference or workshop and would like to stay longer to tour the area etc.

Casa La Paloma’s great location, charm, and the feeling of old Sonoma will enhance your visit.

About Moona O'Toole

On returning to the U.S. after living in Europe for 5 years on a dime and teaching English, I found the small town of Sonoma and settled here while going to Sonoma State University to get my master’s degree and raise my daughters. Sonoma had all the feeling of being in Europe, especially Italy, with the climate and vineyards. My daughters could ride their ponies to town and tie them up in the Plaza in those days. While still teaching English as a Second language, I decided to open a Mexican import store in order to indulge my love of Mexico and traveling. Casa La Paloma had all the local history and Early California feeling I am so fond of. Recently, I have renovated the building with modern amenities and returned it into being a home with Colonial Spanish décor and Early California Sonoma ambiance.

Moona O'Toole purchased this house in 1985

Why Moona O'Toole chose Sonoma

The beauty of this property is in it's history. It was built as a home in the 1870s although it's adobe insulation in walls goes back to earlier times. It was the Bates family home in the 1800s.I have always maintained it's historic character and appreciated it's beautiful large garden area It is close to the Plaza but just enough away not to be too noisy and to have a neighborhood feeling. The best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

It is a short walk 1 block to the Plaza but just enough away not to be too noisy and to have a neighborhood feeling. The best of both worlds. It is located on the East side of town with close access to the local original wineries and picnic areas. You can even ride your bikes. If you plan to go to the Napa Valley, just a couple of blocks more to the East and you are on your way without going through town traffic.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Moona, From the moment we stepped inside the house after long and harried plane flights, the beauty and tranquility relaxed us all. The backyard patio with its beautiful landscaping of fountains, fruit trees, and roses provided a restful gathering place early in the morning for coffee and late in the evening after visiting and sightseeing. Simply a perfect spot only a few minutes from the Plaza. You seem to have anticipated our every need with fully stocked housewares and plenty of clean crisp linens. We love your decor. It is as if you had carefully collected over many years just the right vase or picture to bring out the picturesque and homey feel. We wouldn't change a thing. We needed lots of space and beds and wanted to be close to town so we could walk and enjoy the town We love Casa La Paloma inside and out! Thank you. The Family

Our group loved their stay at the Casa. It’s so close to town (you can see the Plaza from it) and it’s very spacious. The home is beautiful and was a dream for the weekend!

great weekend

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend at Casa La Paloma. The house is fantastic--- built in the late 1800s, decorated in southwestern motif, large living area, large back yard. The house is one block from the plaza--- perfect location. Perfect.

Charming, eclectic home in perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 ladies had a fabulous time staying in this warm and inviting home! The location was walking distance from the picturesque downtown Sonoma area, and we started each morning by walking to a local bakery for coffee and breakfast. Moona did everything to make sure we were comfortable and even checked in to see if we needed anything. We also loved spending time on the outdoor patio where we enjoyed wine and the perfect Sonoma weather. I'd definitely come back and stay here again!!

Depending on the time of year there are many events, festivals and Tuesday night Farmers Market at the downtown Plaza (seasonal). The Farmers Market is full of food vendors, music and fresh produce from the area.

Or the Plaza is a great location for a picnic, wine is allowed in the Plaza Park. Get your picnic supplies at the Sonoma Cheese Factory or Vella Cheese just a short walk on East 2nd Street, take Spain Street east and a left on 2nd passed the field of Clydesdale horses.
