Overview

About the property

The Emerson House at Asgaard Farm is available for your next Adirondack vacation! Enjoy the stunning mountain views that inspired the paintings of Rockwell Kent, explore endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, and experience life on a working farm--all in one unforgettable trip.

The Emerson House was designed and built by Kent in the 1930s, originally for his son Rocky. It eventually became the home of Gladys and Tink Emerson, who managed Asgaard for more than four decades and raised their family here. In recognition of their years of hard work and devotion to the farm, we have carefully renovated their house, so it can be appreciated and enjoyed well into the future.

Today Asgaard is a diversified family farm with a goat dairy and creamery at its core. Revolving around these activities are grass-fed and grass-finished beef together with pastured pork, poultry and eggs. You may be able to help with some of the farm work during your stay in The Emerson House, or you may choose to relax and watch from a distance. In either case, you will surely gain an appreciation for the sustainable agricultural practices that lead to healthy, delicious food. Kent devotees may also soak up the magic of the stunning landscape that inspired many of his paintings as well as the ambiance of his secluded studio, still on the property in its original condition.

Beyond the boundaries of Asgaard, the Adirondack region offers a wide variety of year-round recreational and cultural pursuits. Options range from world-class fly fishing on the Ausable River, Olympic skiing at Whiteface Mountain and spectacular hiking in the High Peaks to current and classic movies at the Champlain Valley Film Society, concerts at the acclaimed Meadowmount School of Music and tours lead by Adirondack Architectural Heritage. The area also boasts several fine restaurants with cuisine featuring local ingredients.

The Emerson House is fully equipped and available throughout the year for weekend and short-term rentals. Accommodations include two bedrooms and a full bath upstairs, a spacious entrance, sunny kitchen, open sitting room and half bath on the ground floor and a full basement with laundry facilities. There is a barbeque grill next to an al fresco dining area. Cheeses, meats, eggs and vegetables produced on the farm can also be provided.

Our regular check-in time is 3:00pm on the day arrival. The check-out time is 10:00am on the day of departure. We can certainly be flexible with these times if there aren't other guests on the front-end or the back-end of your stay.

The real definition of farm to table.

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in over 25 VRBO rentals and this was one of the cleanest and had one of the most well outfitted kitchens. During our five night stay, we ate every meal in, feasting on a huge assortment of delicious fresh meat from the farm. Every view from the farm was filled with incredible scenery and an abundance of healthy, happy grazing animals.

We also deeply appreciated being on the farm of one of our favorite artists, Rockwell Kent. It was a real joy to visit his studio. And, wonderful to see the respect that Rhonda and David have for maintaining the beautiful, old wood buildings throughout the farm.

Rhonda is a most gracious host, we felt at home immediately. She is also incredibly easy to get a hold of if you have any needs while you are there. We cannot wait to return.

Note, if you are a fan of sleeping in on vacation, this is not the place for you. There are no curtains so you rise with the sun accompanied by the bleating of goats, which we loved. Also, if you are looking for a private experience, this is not it. There are many farm workers going past the house regularly. They are non-intrusive, and we found them quite friendly and full of interesting information about farming practices.

What a great place!

  • 5 of 5

For being on a working farm it was very private. Our 2 y/o daughter loved the baby goats and all the other farm animals. She was able to collect some eggs and check out the cows. Anything we needed was provided for, we will definitely be staying here again.

Owner's Response: We really appreciate these kind words. It's our great farm staff you have to thank, though. It's nice to know that when we have to be away, they extend such wonderful hospitality to our guests.

Wonderful house and hosts

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our brothers stayed at the Emerson House on a cold weekend in March while in the area to do some hiking and sight seeing. The house was cozy and warm, simply but beautifully decorated, and well-stocked with everything we needed- including games, books and even some fresh food from the farm. We loved visiting the friendly goats and admiring the cows from the front yard, but unfortunately it was a little too cold to explore as much as I would have liked. We also got a visit from the most adorable and friendly golden retrievers ever! The property itself is beautiful, and luckily we managed to get back from our day of hiking just in time to see the sun set over the mountains. My husband and I look forward to returning some time in warmer weather with our two kids, who we know will love seeing the animals up close.

So beautiful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the Emerson House. It is beautiful and has such a wonderful energy. Quiet times at the farm (from a visitor's perspective anyway), but still got to enjoy the cows and chickens. The farm store sells yummy food and other farm and local products. We're already talking about a return visit.

Wonderful experience

The home is lovely, and tastefully remodeled. It is charming to be centrally located on a operational farm, with a beautiful backdrop of the mountains. We really enjoyed our stay.
