Overview

About the property

The Emerson House at Asgaard Farm is available for your next Adirondack vacation! Enjoy the stunning mountain views that inspired the paintings of Rockwell Kent, explore endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, and experience life on a working farm--all in one unforgettable trip.

The Emerson House was designed and built by Kent in the 1930s, originally for his son Rocky. It eventually became the home of Gladys and Tink Emerson, who managed Asgaard for more than four decades and raised their family here. In recognition of their years of hard work and devotion to the farm, we have carefully renovated their house, so it can be appreciated and enjoyed well into the future.

Today Asgaard is a diversified family farm with a goat dairy and creamery at its core. Revolving around these activities are grass-fed and grass-finished beef together with pastured pork, poultry and eggs. You may be able to help with some of the farm work during your stay in The Emerson House, or you may choose to relax and watch from a distance. In either case, you will surely gain an appreciation for the sustainable agricultural practices that lead to healthy, delicious food. Kent devotees may also soak up the magic of the stunning landscape that inspired many of his paintings as well as the ambiance of his secluded studio, still on the property in its original condition.

Beyond the boundaries of Asgaard, the Adirondack region offers a wide variety of year-round recreational and cultural pursuits. Options range from world-class fly fishing on the Ausable River, Olympic skiing at Whiteface Mountain and spectacular hiking in the High Peaks to current and classic movies at the Champlain Valley Film Society, concerts at the acclaimed Meadowmount School of Music and tours lead by Adirondack Architectural Heritage. The area also boasts several fine restaurants with cuisine featuring local ingredients.

The Emerson House is fully equipped and available throughout the year for weekend and short-term rentals. Accommodations include two bedrooms and a full bath upstairs, a spacious entrance, sunny kitchen, open sitting room and half bath on the ground floor and a full basement with laundry facilities. There is a barbeque grill next to an al fresco dining area. Cheeses, meats, eggs and vegetables produced on the farm can also be provided.

Our regular check-in time is 3:00pm on the day arrival. The check-out time is 10:00am on the day of departure. We can certainly be flexible with these times if there aren't other guests on the front-end or the back-end of your stay.

A wonderful getaway in a farm setting.

  • 5 of 5

The Emerson house is completey updated and not lacking anything. There is no TV or WiFi, but that simply adds to the charm of the home and a much needed step back in time. There are plenty of board games and a radio. David and Rhonda are fantastic hosts and their farm store has incredible cheeses, meats and soaps from the farm. They will graciously give you a tour of the farm and let the kids help feed the animals. We stayed at The Emerson House for a ski weekend and decided to skip a day of skiing as the property and home were so cozy and inviting. Highly recommend...it is one of those gems you tentatively want to share with others before the secret is out!

Cozy house on a lovely farm

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Emerson House over the New Years holiday. It was convenient to skiing in the area and a beautiful home base. We really enjoyed all of the goodies we found upon our arrival as well as those we picked up in the farm store. Rhonda and David were great and made us feel at home on the farm. Getting to meet and pet the goats was a highlight, and we hope to come back in warmer weather.

Wonderful experience!

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, peaceful place. I am a landscape painter and my husband is a photographer. This was ideal for us. The history of Rockwell Kent owning the property was the icing on the cake! The owners are accommodating and easy going. Will return for sure.

Perfect place to relax

  • 5 of 5

The Emerson House was the perfect place to spend time with family in a cozy, clean farmhouse. The views of the mountains and stars alone are worth the trip.

We had a perfect stay at Emerson Cottage which was clean, well stocked and incredibly inviting.

  • 5 of 5

Rhonda and David were welcoming and always available despite the fact they are running a beautiful working farm. The setting is gorgeous, we hiked and biked in the area. We are long time fans of the late artist Rockwell Kent and were so pleased to stay in the (craftsman-like updated) cottage that he had built for his son. We highly recommend Emerson Cottage for individuals, couples and families.

A Slice of Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

Rhonda and David have a truly magical dairy farm. Being able to share a bit of it with them was a very special experience. They are welcoming and incredibly helpful (even when you lock yourself out of the farmhouse at 5 am on a chilly morning in your pjs). We found everything we could need when we arrived, including farm fresh eggs in the fridge, a loaf of fresh baked bread, farm made caramels and goat's milk soap, and even local coffee. We also took advantage of their farm store (which they keep open for guests). Being able to enjoy their cheeses and even steak was a real treat. And we of course had to stock up on soap and caramels for the trip home. They have restored the farmhouse beautifully. It is very comfortable and feels like home. Just a note, the bedrooms and full bath are upstairs and the laundry is in the basement. There is a 1/2 bath downstairs. It was a real treat to have goats next door (in a pasture of course). David graciously took us on a wonderful tour of the farm, including the historical nature of it. And while we were only able to witness the milking process, we would love to return to experience more of the day to day happenings. Goat crossings are one of the special things that happen on the farm. The farmhouse is incredibly private, although it is on a working farm and at times there were people coming and going. That said, everyone was very respectful of our privacy while we were there and we never felt intruded upon. While we loved the privacy, we also loved the ability to get to know Rhonda and David while we were there. We would definitely return! And hope to! Just a note, the farm is located in a fairly remote location. The nearest town is close, but very small. We actually loved this about it! Thank you Rhonda and David for your hospitality and graciousness in sharing such a special place with us.

We are located in the town of Jay and the hamlet of Au Sable Forks, a charming spot in the heart of the high peaks region of the Adirondack Park. Just a short drive to Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain and the great hiking of Keene Valley, our location gives you the benefit of all these exciting places but in a calmer, more serene environment. Staying on a small, sustainable farm will also allow you to get close to the growing local food scene in the Adirondacks.
