Welcome to Finca Good Life!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAuXCTG-UwU

By the way, that’s not just a name; it’s our philosophy. Living the good life is what we do everyday, and our desire is to share it with you for a few days.

But what in the world is a finca? In Spanish it means “farm.”
We don’t have anything like a huge Texas ranch, or a vast corn field in Iowa. No, it’s not that kind of farm. Maybe you should think more about Old MacDonald’s place. But put it on a mountain-top. At 5000 feet. In Costa Rica. Now you’re getting the idea.

Yes, we have a few chickens…and geese…and guineas. They strut around striking the most delightful poses. Speaking of strutting, don’t be surprised when Ben and Jerry—the twin turkeys—run up to gobble bienvenidos (welcome.)

We have the sweetest dairy goats you’ve ever seen. And (with a little help from me in the kitchen) they produce a wide variety of homemade, organic, artisan cheeses. From Manchego to Brie to Chevré and more, they will entrance your taste buds.

Of course, we also have our good-natured pups. And what would a farm be without a barn cat.

Today a lot of folks call what we do, homesteading.

We just call it the good life.

About Michele Martin

There’s something about being Native American that has always caused me to view the world in a fresh, distinctive way. Like the first time I ever saw Ray. My mother and I had just opened a dress emporium near the Snake River Canyon. (We sold dresses for $3.99!) On our way to our little boutique one bright morning we stopped to window shop at the local dime store. I saw the cutest boy inside who was carrying a huge ladder down the stairs. Suddenly he tripped and fell and that ladder was wrapped around his head. I laughed so hard. My mother said, “You’re going to marry that boy one day.” I blushed. But I was already in love, and I have been ever since.

We’ve always been adventurers. Like the time Ray came home one December—and without any previous warning said, “I just bought your Christmas present. It’s an Italian restaurant on St. Thomas.” So we loaded up two kids and stuffed everything we could into a VW van and moved to a Caribbean island.

Years later (and too many wondrous stories to tell you now) we moved back to the States. During the 57 years since I first saw him in that store window in Idaho, Ray and I have continued to follow an assortment of dreams.

I’ve been a nurse; I’ve owned an ice cream parlor. Ray worked for Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. We are prize-winning Chili Cook-off winners. For years before pulling up stakes for Costa Rica, I owned a professional staffing company, and Ray was in charge of umpteen university dining services. We’ve been to all 50 states and lived in 35 different places. Why? Because Ray always said he wanted to know what was “on the other side of the mountain.”

Living on our mountain-top in tropical Costa Rica, we never need to move again, because we now can see what is on every side of the mountain—and it’s unconditional love, unquestioned acceptance, and natural beauty.

Ray calls it the meaning of life.

The Costa Ricans call it Pura Vida.

Whatever you call it, we’ve found it here, and we want to share it with you.

Michele Martin purchased this bungalow in 2009

Why Michele Martin chose Cartago

The municipality we live in is called Paraíso (paradise.) There’s not a place in Costa Rica that isn’t stunningly beautiful. But our piece of paradise is extra special.

Can you imagine looking to the right and seeing not one, but two sleeping giants? During your visit you won’t have to imagine it, you will have a view of two towering volcanos. Look a bit to the left and the sight of a charming hamlet…complete with church spires…will come into focus in the distance. Don’t forget to look over your shoulder—because there is our verdant mountain valley laid out in front of you.

Waterfalls cover the opposite summit as easily as the coffee fields blanket the hillsides. And the sky in between is dotted with the lilting Swallow-tailed Kite—one of the coolest birds on the planet. With its deeply forked tail and bold black-and-white plumage, it is unmistakable in the summer skies. Flying with barely a wingbeat and maneuvering with just a twist of its incredible tail, it chases dragonflies through the crystal blue yonder. After rearing its young in nearby treetops, the kite migrates to wintering grounds in South America.

Sound good? Well, you really have to experience it all in person.

What makes this bungalow unique

Your private cottage is just the start of what awaits you--move over Pottery Barn--the easy, tropical decor is enchanting. Should you wish to acquaint yourself with our good life in a more interactive way, the following activities are available for you—just be sure and let us know at the time of your booking so we can give you the one-on-one personal attention you deserve.

Artisanal Cheese Tasting and Wine Lunch

Our cheese cave is always full of some mighty-tasty cheeses that are aging to perfection. We’ll choose several varieties and pair that with wine and tropical fruit for an unforgettable experience. $15 per person.

Cheesemaking Workshop

Perfect for a couple or a family. We’ll make that most famous French goat cheese: Chèvre!
The real fun kicks into high gear when you get to design your very own flavor combinations.
Then you’ll have it to enjoy during the rest of your stay—if you can keep from eating it all up the first day. Approximately 2 hours $12 per person.

Hands-on Homestead Sausage Making

While we do not butcher any of our animals (they are pets and part of the Finca Good Life family) we do make homemade sausage. From links to breakfast patties, and whether you grill some up on our private smokehouse grill or just fry some up for breakfast, you’ll have the freshest and the “best-est” sausage you’ve ever eaten. Approximately 3 hours. $25 per person.

Goats 101

Meet the “girls” and have a truly “hands-on” experience as your learn to milk the goats. Also included, gathering farm fresh, organic eggs. Combine this with the cheesemaking and/or sausage making classes above and you’ll have the makings of a breakfast to tell your friends about. Talk about true farm-to-table freshness! Free.

Goats 201

Have a charmed life? You’ll think so if you visit us during kidding season—that’s when the goats are having babies. Whether you witness the miracle of birth or just play with those darling baby goats, you’ll have photos of your life. Also on the house.

Rest, Renew, Reconnect, Reenergize.....

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Finca Good Life after a week of adventure at the beach. It was the perfect place to rest and read and just BE. My daughter started middle school this year and I wanted a vacation that was full of fun and adventure but also about just being together doing the things we have done her whole life - cuddling, reading, walking, talking. Finca provided the recipe for perfection with their goats, turkeys, dogs, cats, ducks - there was always an animal around to greet you as you took in the beauty of the scenery surrounding Finca. It is was such a wonderful retreat before heading home to the hussle of City life, it has been 3 months since our visit and I am yearning for the solitude of the ridge and the warmth of all those that reside in and around Finca. We will be back, hopefully sooner than later. Michelle and Ray were the most wonderful hosts, I felt like family by the time we left and miss their warmth and energy.

Piece of Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Michele and Ray are the most gracious and welcoming hosts. The property has breathtaking views, beautiful landscaping and the cutest little farm from the baby goats, chickens, turkeys and the sweetest of dogs. The cabina is stunning- decorated to perfection with all the amenities needed: fully equipped kitchen, large bathroom, extra seating and super comfy bedding! It was impeccably clean and the area is quiet, safe with a true local Tico lifestyle. There is plenty to do and see near Finca Good Life, it truly is the real Costa Rican experience! I cannot wait to return as soon as I am able to, they truly made my vacation so very special!

Charm galore!

  • 5 of 5

We had booked this place because of the promise of fantastic views from the front porch. Alas, we arrived amidst wind, rain and fog and that weather pretty much stayed with us the entire visit. Our hosts, Ray and Michele, apologized profusely for the inclement weather but then proceeded to charm us with everything else this place has to offer - farm animals (each with its own personality), incredible gardens, orchards and landscaping, and the delightful graciousness of our Michele and Ray sharing their story, recommendations for places to eat and things to see and do.

And the cottage itself? Designed by Ray and Michele, it takes advantage of the landscape, is very comfortable, has everything you need, and a bed so comfortable you'll be asleep in no time. Special thanks for all the starter supplies including local coffee, and cheese and goat milk right from the farm.

Like one other reviewer said, the only thing wrong was that we didn't stay longer!
