About Maire MacDermott

Nile Lodge has been part of the MacDermott family since 1942. I took over the care of this historic house in 1995. I have a great interest of Irish history and culture I have enjoyed hugely looking after this beautiful house and grounds. I am a family doctor and work part time doing that. It is something I have always enjoyed as I love meeting people. I have taken a big interest in the history of this house . I was very fortunate to have had Dr Nick Slope, Chairman of the Nelson Society undertook a large part of this research into the Captain and Commander who owned this house. I love walking the old streets of this city and looking at the medieval architecture. I also enjoy exploring the nearby counties and love finding special places away from the beaten track.

Maire MacDermott purchased this House in 1995

Why Maire MacDermott chose Salthill

This house is a place I have always loved. I am very happy in the location near to the sea and city center and have great neighbors and friends here. This house was owned and cared for by my husbands family before me and it was part of the social life in Galway going back to the 1940s. Before that I think that previous owners kept it to themselves.

What makes this House unique

A fantastic and unique house, with an awesome host

                                                              Adam F.Berkeley, CA

We loved staying at Nile Lodge! We were a family - two couples and one child (2 yr old) - so it was more space than we needed, but we're so glad we got the opportunity to experience the place, and "experience" really is the right word. It's a historic property, originally built in the early 1800s, and the walls of the main hallway are lined with the wills of the family through the generations, passing the house down. There's beautiful antique furniture, glassware, and Irish dishware all over the house, but despite the history it still feels homey and welcoming. Bathrooms are updated, beds are comfortable, kitchen is spacious, there's a washer and dryer, lots of yard space, and beautiful fireplaces in every room. Maire, our host, was great - she had coffee, tea, and pastries waiting for us, milk, butter, and clotted cream in the fridge, and had one of the bedrooms and bathrooms all set up for our little one. She spent an hour, at least, telling us all about the history of the house and explaining how everything worked. We hope we can find an excuse to come back to Galway so we can stay here again! If you want new and modern, maybe this isn't the property for you, but if you're in the mood to try a rental you'll remember, I highly recommend Nile Lodge.

                                                              Owner's Response:

I would like to thank you very sincerely for taking the time and going to the trouble of writing such a detailed review.

It was a huge pleasure to welcome such a wonderful family as yours and I hope that you will find even the tiniest excuse to come back here.

I would really love it if you did and will hold the house for you anytime you like.

                                                              With very best wishes,

                                                              A Grand Galway Home

                                                              Kathy M.

We just returned from a family visit to Galway, where we stayed at Nile Lodge. What a wonderful experience! Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by Maire, who helped us get settled, provided maps and information about local sites, and even took the time to make dinner reservations for us at wonderful local restaurants. Maire has lovingly restored her beautiful home to provide luxurious and comfortable accommodations in the perfect setting. There are garden views from each bedroom window and the home is a brief walk to the center of Galway as well as close to the Salthill Promenade along Galway Bay.

The bedrooms were spacious and the beds were very comfortable with luxurious linens. The bathrooms were updated and fully equipped. Maire thoughtfully provided breakfast provisions and the kitchen has everything you need if interested in making meals.

After our activities each day, it was a special treat to return to Nile Lodge, gather round a roaring fire and unwind. There are also games, cards etc..provided for family fun.

Our only regret is we did not have more time to enjoy this beautiful home and all that Galway has to offer.

Thank you again, Maire, for your hospitality. We hope to return in the future and will recommend Nile Lodge to our family and friends.

I cannot begin to tell you Kathy how much I appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness in writing such a beautiful review. It means so much to have your encouragement. I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into that lovely review.

I am so happy that you all enjoyed your stay here.

You and your wonderful family are all very welcome back to Nile Lodge anytime, Maire

                                                              Home away from home

                                                              Jim M.St Louis, MO

Nile Lodge is not just renting a place to stay, it is a sharing of Maire's property, pride and hospitality. From personally greeting us to the groceries awaiting us to booking a dinner reservation for us in spite of our late arrival, Maire exceeded all of our expectations and even hopes. The home is lovely (like staying in a museum), and Maire's tips for things to do helped us enjoy ourselves even more.

Our group of six adults enjoyed the Lodge beyond our dreams. Thank you, Maire, for making us feel a part of your family for our stay.

                                                              Owner's Response:

I really cannot tell you Jim how much I appreciate your beautiful review, and the kindness and thoughtfulness that went into your writing of it. It was an absolute delight for me to have you and your wonderful family stay here, and I would love if you decided to come back. A Cead Mile Failte would await you, your family and your friends,

Nile Lodge is a once in a lifetime experience: lovely, comfortable, and in a perfect location!

                                                              Shelly D.

Our stay in Galway was enhanced by staying at Nile Lodge. Our only regret was that our schedule was so full we were unable to simply sit and enjoy our environment. Set on an extraordinary property in the middle of Galway this home was welcoming, luxuriously comfortable, and convenient. Checking in and out was simple. The kitchen and laundry were highly functional and the home was spotless. My one piece of advice would be to stay an extra day in Galway so that you could enjoy this stop as a destination by itself! We walked everywhere, we wanted for nothing, and had ample space as a family of five. I feel confident asserting that this is your best option in Galway, no contest. We will be recommending it to all our friends traveling to Ireland.

                                                              Dear Shelly,

Your absolutely beautiful review makes all our work here worthwhile! Thank you so much, it is very much appreciated. I am very happy that you all enjoyed your stay here, and would love to have you and your friends and family back here anytime. A very big welcome awaits you all, Maire

Our extended family of 6 loved our stay at the Nile Lodge. This was a lovely house, in a great location from which you could walk (15-20 minutes) to town center and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, and we enjoyed a fire in the fireplace of the family sitting room on one particularly rainy June evening. It was also a great base to explore locations in the surrounding area like Connemara - easy access to roads leading out of Galway. Maire was a wonderful host; she had stocked our fridge with breakfast provisions, and made the best granola for us to enjoy. Very warm and friendly, she had great recommendations on the area. This was our favorite place to stay during our Ireland trip. I highly recommend this house. Thank you, Maire, for making us feel so welcome and for making our stay special.
