About Maire MacDermott

Nile Lodge has been part of the MacDermott family since 1942.

I took over the care of this historic house in 1995. I have a great interest of Irish history and culture I have enjoyed hugely looking after this beautiful house and grounds.

I am a family doctor and work part time doing that. It is something I have always enjoyed as I love meeting people.

I have taken a big interest in the history of this house . I was very fortunate to have had Dr Nick Slope, Chairman of the Nelson Society undertook a large part of this research into the Captain and Commander who owned this house.

I love walking the old streets of this city and looking at the medieval architecture. I also enjoy exploring the nearby counties and love finding special places away from the beaten track.

Maire MacDermott purchased this house in 1995

Why Maire MacDermott chose Galway City

This house is a place I have always loved. I am very happy in the location near to the sea and city center and have great neighbors and friends here. This house was owned and cared for by my husbands family before me and it was part of the social life in Galway going back to the 1940s. Before that I think that previous owners kept it to themselves.

What makes this house unique

Wonderful Location in one of most desirable parts of Galway city. Luxury spacious accommodation, over 2500 Sq feet of privacy.

Five minute walking distance to city center restaurants, night life and beach.

Located perfectly for sightseeing the major attractions of west of Ireland The Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, The Burren, Kylemore Abbey, The Aran Islands, Bunratty Castle, Ailwee Caves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful tour of the rest of Ireland but none ever compared to our time with you at Nile Lodge. Thank you again for your hospitality. Thank you so much.

Nile Lodge is a once in a lifetime experience: lovely, comfortable, and in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Galway was enhanced by staying at Nile Lodge. Our only regret was that our schedule was so full we were unable to simply sit and enjoy our environment. Set on an extraordinary property in the middle of Galway this home was welcoming, luxuriously comfortable, and convenient. Checking in and out was simple. The kitchen and laundry were highly functional and the home was spotless. My one piece of advice would be to stay an extra day in Galway so that you could enjoy this stop as a destination by itself! We walked everywhere, we wanted for nothing, and had ample space as a family of five. I feel confident asserting that this is your best option in Galway, no contest. We will be recommending it to all our friends traveling to Ireland.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Nile Lodge is not just renting a place to stay, it is a sharing of Maire's property, pride and hospitality. From personally greeting us to the groceries awaiting us to booking a dinner reservation for us in spite of our late arrival, Maire exceeded all of our expectations and even hopes. The home is lovely (like staying in a museum), and Maire's tips for things to do helped us enjoy ourselves even more.

Our group of six adults enjoyed the Lodge beyond our dreams. Thank you, Maire, for making us feel a part of your family for our stay.

A Beautiful historical and charming house in the middle of Galway city. We were greeted with smiles and homemade granola from the owner. Great location, walking distance to the city and beach.

Beautiful, spacious house, excellent location, and wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of 6 loved our stay at the Nile Lodge. This was a lovely house, in a great location from which you could walk (15-20 minutes) to town center and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, and we enjoyed a fire in the fireplace of the family sitting room on one particularly rainy June evening. It was also a great base to explore locations in the surrounding area like Connemara - easy access to roads leading out of Galway. Maire was a wonderful host; she had stocked our fridge with breakfast provisions, and made the best granola for us to enjoy. Very warm and friendly, she had great recommendations on the area. This was our favorite place to stay during our Ireland trip. I highly recommend this house. Thank you, Maire, for making us feel so welcome and for making our stay special.

A very beautiful, comfortable, and interesting house in an excellent location.

  • 5 of 5

Renting this house turned out to be one of the best decisions of our vacation. Maire was a very warm, friendly and knowledgeable host. Our family of six had a wonderful time exploring the Galway area using this as our home base. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a special experience. Hopefully, we'll return some day. Thank you, Maire!

The ideal location in Galway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and myself along with our son's family spent a week at Nile Lodge visiting our granddaughter who is spending a semester abroad studying at Galway University. We've stayed in many VRBO and Home Away properties over the years and we all agreed Nile Lodge was one of our best choices. This historic house is like stepping back 100 years in time yet maintaining a full level of current amenities. This property has been lovingly and expertly restored to it's original grandeur. The private garden, enclosed terrace and conservatory captures the essences of a time gone by. The property is located in the perfect spot in Galway. 15 minutes or less walking distance to the center of town or a great walk along the Salthill Promenade. So many great pubs and restaurants nearby that you'd need a month to experience all of them. Food markets, seafood shops and wine stores are all in convent walking distance. We all decided the best part of Nile Lodge and our stay in Galway was the owner Maire. She is totally delightful and charming. She was so helpful and welcoming that when we left we all said we have a new friend in Ireland. Thanks Maire, we're looking forward to our next visit.
