Flat, wheelchair-accommodating path to the best family beach in town. Boogie board, bodysurf, skimboard, volleyball, beachball, soccer, sunbathe, you name it. The beach is exceptional in this town in that it is never covered by the high tide. No cliffs nor slippery rocks, you can always feel the warm, soft sand beneath your toes.

Once you set foot on this property you’ll never want to leave. Located at the end of a quiet street in the heart of a great beach town, it is perfect for a family reunion or a couples' romantic getaway. Over 1000 square feet of new decks provide a private area for sunbathing and a grand space for entertainment and relaxation. Hear birds singing in the trees overhead and the sound of crashing waves.

And the surf! This is the best destination summer surf spot in California! It has it all, point, reef and beach breaks from beginner to intermediate to advanced. You can walk to a dozen top notch spots like 26th Ave. (famous for aerials), Pleasure Point (long, ruler edge rights), Second Point & O’Neil’s (great for beginners), Sewers (primo tubes, advanced), 38th Ave. (perhaps the best summer wave in town), the Hook (another classic point) and Privates (another great beginner point wave). The property manager can offer you some tips and insight based on his 40 years in the water. Come back home and take a hot outdoor shower to wash off the sand before popping into the hot tub.

About Mark Thomas

I have lived in Santa Cruz since 1974 and love the town and all it has to offer. I know the ins and outs and all of the nooks and crannies where good things are hidden. Besides my work as a real estate agent, I have worked as a teacher for 33 years, and a nature and adventure guide during those summers.

Mark Thomas purchased this house in 2012

Why Mark Thomas chose Santa Cruz

This place is something special. The location can't be beat. The house is comfortable, clean and well equipped. It has a great, light, bright, warm feel to it. The views are great. The privacy is wonderful yet there's plenty lots of room to spread out on an double sized lot.

What makes this house unique

No other beach property in Santa Cruz is quite like this one. You have an unobstructed view of the beach, park and lagoon from the huge front deck and yard. You have all the benefits of being at the beach with a lot less traffic and noise.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We were lucky to see the skimboard competition right out front. We loved it all & would come back in a hearbeat.

PS Would prefer unscented laundry detergent.

Beautiful, spacious home just a short walk to the beach.

  • 4 of 5

The location of this home is wonderful! It is located just across the street from a wonderful beach, with a large, gated parking area that was perfect for kids to ride bikes without worrying about traffic. (Note: be aware there are lots of transients all around Moran Lake) There is a great view of the ocean from the hot tub and a hot outdoor shower! It has a large living room, dining room and master bedroom/bath. The kitchen is rather small and has only basic amenities, but there is a back patio with BBQ, although we didn't use it. There were beach toys, boogie boards, and lots of both beach and bath towels. The patio furniture and beach chairs were an added bonus, but everything outdoors was pretty funky and wasn't well cared for. While the house itself was amazing, it wasn't well stocked. We stayed 4 nights and ran out of papertowels & TP; and there was no dish detergent so we had to go buy some to run the dishwasher. Don't expect bath soaps/shampoo or any kitchen condiments or coffee. There are minimal cups and glasses. For the price we paid, I expected a few more perks/amenities. The most annoying thing was that the hot tub was serviced during our stay and no one warned us they were coming. We came back from the beach expecting to jump in the tub and were told it had just been cleaned and couldn't be used for the remainder of the day. The housekeeping person also showed up at 8AM on the day of our departure with no warning. There was zero communication from the elusive property manager. However, I'd stay here again. All in all, this is a fantastic, convenient location and a beautiful home.

This house was perfect for our group and we all had a wonderful time. The location by the beach is great. The home is comfortable and had everything we needed. The hot tub, easy parking, bbg, and outdoor decks all add to the beach house vibe. We all want to come back next year!

Big thanks from, Lynn, Tex, Carly, Teddy, Jasmine, Jack, Taylor, Jared, Ryan, and Nate!

Great end of summer family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six adults, including my 82-year-old mother, enjoyed a Labor Day week vacation at Heron House. The ocean view was terrific and we could work on one of several jigsaw puzzles on the deck with the sound of waves crashing against the shore in the background. Kitchen was well equipped for preparing all our meals, with plenty of plates and utensils to last more than one meal for all of us. We used the grill a lot, and Mark was quick to refill the tanks we when ran out of fuel. TV and internet service were as promised, and plenty of parking for our two vehicles as well as several guests who joined us for an afternoon. The girls really enjoyed the hot tub. The beach is within walking distance, but the first part of the path is not terribly wheelchair friendly unless you have an all-terrain tires (we managed to roll Mother down with two of us helping lift her chair through the rough spots); there is no wheelchair access to the beach itself although Mother was content to sit up top and watch the younger family members play in the surf. Once inside, the house is wheelchair friendly, but you need to either negotiate a steep (but smooth and paved) path up the side of the house and up and over two stairs on the back patio; or be prepared to lift the chair up the six or so steps up to the front door. The front deck has another two steps up. We have no complaints and were able to get Mother in and out without much problem, but be advised there are some obstacles to work around. Two of the bedrooms have full size (king or queen) beds; the third has two doubledecker bunk beds. The open living and dining area was plenty spacious for all of us to enjoy a shared TV program or spread out and do our own thing. If we were to plan another beach vacation, we would definitely come again.

Exactly what we needed

  • 5 of 5

We had two families and a total of 5 kids, ages 2-11. It was perfect for what we needed! We loved using the large driveway to let the kids play and ride bikes. The bunk bed room worked great. We enjoyed exploring Santa Cruz. It was a wonderful time!

Perfect Location for Families with Small Children

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed her with our 2.5 year old for 10 days. We wanted a 1 story house (IMHO, a 1 story is more toddler friendly) where we could bike to both Capitola and Santa Cruz, where we could literally walk out of the house onto a beach, and where we had an ocean view. This was PERFECT. The house is ~ a 10 minute bike ride to Capitola and ~ a 15 minute bike ride to Santa Cruz. There is a small local grocery store in a strip mall that is ~ a 10 minute bike ride away. The beach is literally outside of the doorstep, you can see/hear the waves from the house, and we saw dolphins/seals throughout our stay. As for the house, it is well stocked with everything one needs, including extra towels and bed linens. The outdoor shower provides *hot* water to rinse off before sitting in the hot tub or coming back into the house, and we loved to sit in the hot tub or front porch during the sunset. The owner, Mark, was extremely friendly and helpful before our arrival, and we had fresh flowers from the garden in each room of the house when we arrived. The only two minor complaints I have are (1) the dishwasher was somewhat old and didn't clean the dishes well and (2) there were no beach toys in the garage (previous reviewers commented that there were beach toys in the garage) but again, these were minor. We will definitely recommend this house and come back.

Owner's Response: Thanks Janice, so glad you had a a nice stay. Thank you for the feedback about the dishwasher (We will attend to it) & the toys, which somehow "got legs" from previous renters. (We will replace them) Once again, Thank You.

Fantastic location in front of the best family beach in the heart of Santa Cruz. The beach out front provides endless fun body surfing, surfing, boogie boarding, skim boarding, volleyball, etc. It is also a wonderful romantic place to stroll the evening sunset.

Nearby are the Boardwalk, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, as well as lots of shops and plenty of things to do.
