Why Maria Tukeva chose Pigeon Cay
I had been visiting Cat Island for over 15 years, when I found the opportunity to purchase a house with the most extraordinary view and location I had ever seen. Cat Island is a magical place, with incredible colors and textures. There is a peacefulness not found in many places today. There is also a rich culture, heritage and history to be explored. It is an ideal place for those who seek to explore off the beaten path.
What makes this House unique
The name "Carried Away," reflects the feeling I got when I first saw the view from the living room. The striking blues and greens of the sea change as the sun moves across the horizon. The house was renovated to maximize its location and views, by local craftsmen with local materials and traditions in mind. Cat Island stone, native woods, and tropical hardwood for the deck, create a setting that complements rather than disrupts the environment. The living area is open with lots of light, windows, and cross breezes. The deck facing the sea gives a feeling of being on the prow of a boat, with the sea just steps away. Both bedrooms have their own private door onto the deck. Once you take a shower in the outdoor shower, you will never want to shower indoors again. Pigeon Cay beach is ideal for long walks on the beach, however you will rarely run into any one else on the beach. Fabulous snorkeling can be found a short bike ride or swim down the coast. Cat Islanders are friendly and proud of their island, with its unique history. There are small general stores and groceries where you can find most necessities, and there are local restaurants to experience local cuisine. You are truly going back in time to a more simple existence.

Perfect Location - Peaceful and Quiet
This was our second stay at Maria's Carried Away and would stay again. The house is well cared for and well appointed, especially the kitchen. Debbie is so fun to talk with as she knows everyone on the island and is a great resource. If you are looking for party central this isn't the place for you. Do your research re no-see ums/sand fleas for prevention and after bite care. If you are a mosquito magnet you will likely be a no-seeum/sand flea magnet. Annoying but not so to ruin the holiday. There is a great hike out the front door and to the left to Alligator Bay. - about 6k. Beautiful views of the sea. If you are up for a more challenging hike ask Debbie how to get to Winding Bay. As you clear the bush you walk onto a white sand beach and there are no humans in sight.
Lovely house with views of the ocean from 4 rooms (at least).
A great home in a beautiful setting with everything you need to relax.
We love Carried Away. It's in a private setting with everything you need to enjoy a relaxing time right on the beach. The decks, screened porch, and direct beach access provide everything you need to read, dine, snorkel and fish. We enjoy walking the beach and bike riding around the island. The house is well outfitted for cooking and beach going. There are a number of local restaurants where it's easy to meet and mix with locals and other island visitors in relaxing settings with great local seafood cooked up fresh.
The views from the house are breathtaking.
I loved the many places to watch the natural beauty of each day unfold.
Carried Away was a lovely house to stay in - clean, well equipped with a large bright kitchen. Firm, comfortable beds.
Spacious verandah with nice shade & extra large loungers which were very much appreciated!
The outdoor shower was well thought out.
We enjoyed eating breakfast & dinner in the screened in porch which gave protection from the no-seeums.
Great location on a small beach with good swimming & very quiet.
The view from the house was stunning - turquoise sea & perfect sunsets.
Incredible night skies.
Debby was a delight, it was lovely to chat with her about the island.
Danny King was most helpful arranging our car rental & with giving us directions to a spectacular beach on the Atlantic side of the island.
Looking forward to returning to Cat Island & Carried Away!
K & B'
My 90 year old mother, my sister, and I just spent the most wonderful week on Cat Island, staying in Maria's property. It was perfect. Her home is located on the most beautiful beach, with lovely native plants landscaping the property. The house is clean, beautifully maintained, and has comfortable furniture and amazing views of the ocean. We found every possible kitchen utensil, and as we cooked most of our own meals, used most of them! Maria's place is perfect for relaxing, regrouping, and recharging..... we aren't much for the night life, so we would wander out in the daytime, seeking a fish/shrimp/conch/ lobster lunch from one of the cafe's open this week. Most of the time we read, talked, walked the beach, used the double kayak, and just reconnected as family. We had a wonderful surprise one afternoon when we stumbled into a private birthday party at Da Smoke Pot, and the folks insisted we stay and join in.... thus was our introduction to Rake and Scrape music!! and everyone was so gracious to my mother, all calling her "Mom"... it was precious! I truly hope to return to this lovely place. Kudos to Danny King and his sister Debbie for their generous assistance and lovely advice. We always felt that we were in the best hands. Thank you Maria!
Cat Island is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear water, and peaceful, uncrowded environment. On most days, you will be the only one on the beach you choose. There are multiple ways to enjoy the beautiful outdoor environment, including swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, biking, hiking and beach combing.
History buffs will want to visit the Hermitage, a monastery built by Father Jerome, an architect and priest who chose to live their as a hermit for 18 years. There are four other churches built by him throughout the island.
Local culture includes Rake n Scrape music, a musical form that was created in the Bahamas, and is performed in several small restaurants on the island.
With some searching, you can buy fresh fish or conch from local fisherman, or you can contract with a local fisherman to take you deep sea or bone fishing.
Some local culinary delights include conch salad, cracked conch, conch fritters, jerk chicken, dirty rice and guava duff. Fresh papaya and mango are available from local farmers and gardeners.
Driving on the island is a delight - no traffic, no stop lights, and beautiful views on all sides.
