Beautiful soundfront home with 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths.
MOONTREE COTTAGE has one of the most beautiful views on the Outer Banks. There are only a few steps from the driveway to the main level, which contains the living room, dining room, kitchen, screened porch, deck and a master bedroom and bath. Two bedrooms on the upper level and a bedroom plus den on the lower level offer privacy for additional family members and/or friends. There are Restoration Hardware fixtures in the 3 1/2 baths, high-end appliances (and every utensil a cook might need) in the kitchen, Pine Cone Hill quilts and numerous other personal touches, including spa bath amenities for every guest.
Relax on the screened porch, soak in the hot tub or paddle in the sound from your private beach. Go crabbing or kayaking from the community dock next to the house.
The ocean is a short walk away (or you may drive and park at the neighborhood parking lot if you have a lot of gear to carry).
We generally offer a Sunday - Sunday schedule, as the Sunday traffic jams are not as bad as Saturday. We are open to other timing if available, especially in the fall, winter and spring. Shorter stays are available off-season as well.

About Polly Wessel
Polly and Dave currently divide their time between Duck, the New Hampshire Lakes Region and New Zealand. Dave is a former mayor of Duck and Polly helped to incorporate Duck as a town in 2002.
Polly Wessel purchased this House in 1999
Why Polly Wessel chose Duck
When we looked for a home on the Outer Banks, we knew we would be awake for the sunsets, so a sound view was our top priority. We love Duck for so many reasons - we especially love the walking-jogging-biking trail and the town park.
What makes this House unique
Nestled in the trees in a lovely quiet neighborhood, we feel that Moontree Cottage offers the feel of both beach and woods. Even on the hottest summer day, the trees provide shade. As this is our home for part of each year, we have updated it using high quality items, such as Restoration Hardware in the bathrooms, KitchenAid appliances, Pine Cone Hill Linens, etc. You should be able to find everything you need in the kitchen - including a KitchenAid Stand Mixer!

This Place is Magical
We've been visitors to the Outer Banks for years, but we'd never come in the offseason and we'd never stayed Soundside before. Due to some changes in family dynamics, we decided that Thanksgiving was the perfect opportunity for a change in scenery and perhaps a new tradition.
After a long ride from MD, the warm welcome from the Wessels (a cold bottle of wine, some fresh pumpkin cake and a sweet goody bag) was most appreciated.
The layout was perfect - us old folks stayed on the main floor, the teenager went upstairs and the young family with toddler had their own space down below. Everyone was comfortable and had plenty of privacy and personal space when needed. The bathrooms are recently updated. Beds are comfortable with plenty of extra blankets and pillows at hand. The kitchen was very well appointed, even for cooking a full Thanksgiving feast. Common areas are bright, cozy and very comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean.
We arrived late at night so we didn't get to appreciate the best thing about Moontree until the next morning -- WOW that view. The house is elevated above the Sound and nestled in the trees. The light is just beautiful, the water views mesmerizing.
We enjoyed the dock on the Sound, as well as the sandy beach below. Walk to the ocean beach took about 10-15 minutes. Close walk/drive to all the amenities in Duck. The hot tub was also awesome.
In all, it was a beautiful week. The owners were very thorough, thoughtful and communicative and even reached out to us after we left to let us know that my bonehead husband left his wedding ring behind. (They're mailing it to us. He is forgiven. Thank you Wessels.)
Can't wait to come back!!!!!
Thanks so much - we are glad you had a good visit. Come back any time!
Cozy, Nice views, Nice Layout, Peaceful, Great Water Access
We were a group of five that stayed for 3 nights for the OBX marathon in November of 2017.
We really liked the property and the location. Very peaceful setting on the water, could walk out on the pier at night and felt like you had the coast to yourself. Nice deck space (some uncovered for when you want sun, and some covered for when you want shade). Outdoor hot tub, grill, and beach chairs rounded out the cottage's knack for soaking up the outdoors.
Inside was great, the cooks in the group raved about the well supplied kitchen and cookware. TVs and cable in everyone room, comfortable common area, but the three floors of living space also gave each group their own space when they wanted it. Nice big dining table with candle center pieces for family meals.
Also, I have probably rented 2 dozen properties for family trips over the past 10 years, and Polly was the most standout property manager to work with. Very detail oriented and had answered all of our question before we could ask them. Also left a welcome bag with goodies, and was very flexible about check-in/check-out times (although I imagine this varies in the busier summer months).
Great time, everyone loved it, and would recommend to group sizes 8 or under looking for a peaceful week in the OBX. Also, Duck is a nice part of the OBX as its away from the main causeway (we did trips up to light house at Curituck and down to Bodie light house)
Thanks so much for staying- we are glad the whole family had a great weekend!
Outstanding vacation- perfect home!
My family very much enjoyed our stay at Moontree Cottage. The home is beautiful, the location was convenient with excellent views and access to the sound, and we had the perfect amount of space for visitors throughout the week. The owners of the property our great to work with, very responsive and accommodating. I highly recommend staying at Moontree Cottage!
Best Vacation Ever!
*The 9 day rental period was wonderful...got to just watch the traffic on changeover day...and not have to be in it.
*Our family of 7 ranged from 14 months to 67 years...and all thoroughly enjoyed Moontree and Duck.
*The Moontree layout worked so well. Baby and parents had the upstairs adjoining bedrooms, the other young couple had the privacy of the first floor suite and the Grandparents had the main floor bedroom close to all the action.
*As others noted, the furnishings, kitchen equipment, a/c and appliances worked well and made for a comfortable stay.
*The setting is awesome! Just looking out from the screened in porch was a highlight for toddler, grandpa and everyone in between. Our family members each got to indulge in some of their favorite activities: kayaking, cycling, surfing, fine dining, strolling around town and stores.
*Thanks for the toddler/baby equipment--crib, high chair, beach toys and child size chairs (a big hit).
*We brought kayaks from home and left them on the beach by the dock. It was a great way to explore the shoreline and get waterfront view of the houses...a favorite pastime of ours.
A wonderful, memorable vacation
Thanks Michael! I am so glad you and your family had a good time.
We needed a get away
Our whole experience from initial inquiry to the day we had to pack up and leave was top notch. Having lived on the Northern Banks, we know how peaceful sounside is and our experience was no exception. The beautiful old growth trees sheltered so many beautiful birds. Comfortable couches, great kitchen, wonderful breezes in all the rooms and a great dock with cupola to watch the sunsets. This was the most "homelike" place we have ever rented. Duck is the place to stay for convenience and Moontree Cottage was perfect.
Best Family Vacation Location This Side of the Moon!
I have so many good things to say about Moontree Cottage, I don't know where to begin…
*Location: Secluded, quiet, retreat-like but within walking distance of the Sound, the Ocean and the center of Duck, including many restaurants and shops!
*View: Breathtaking (and I really mean breath-taking) view of sunsets over the Outer Banks Sound. The views in the morning and throughout the day are also very BEAUTIFUL.
*Layout of the house: Separate, private spaces and a beautiful, vaulted grand living room dining room area that overlooks the Sound. This allows privacy for different groups of guests in the same house. The lower level bedroom with a view of the sound is especially wonderful! All the bedrooms were wonderful, the beds very comfortable.
*Outdoor shower & Hot tub & gas grill: What a treat the beautiful outdoor shower is! (I am trying to figure out how to build one behind my house.) The hot tub was so relaxing and invigorating at the same time - with a view of the Sound too boot! The grill helped us to cook the best tuna I have ever had. Tuna has never tasted so good!
*Pier/Dock: The Duck town pier abuts Moontree Cottage. in a minute you can be out on the sound - day or night. What a treat! A great place to launch a kayak, paddle board, etc.!
*Very well equipped, functional and beautiful kitchen!
*Airconditioning system - kept the house beautifully cool!
***Overall: A most memorable experience. We stayed in the Fall, but I would imagine that the secluded nature of Moontree Cottage would be especially wonderful in the summer when Duck is brimming with folks. Moontree Cottage exceeded our expectations. Go for it!
Thanks so much! It sounds as though you enjoyed the same things we love about the cottage. Hope you will consider returning!
