Duck Soundfront Cottage, fabulous sunsets, mobility-friendly, Friday turnover

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Space 2,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Beautiful soundfront home with 4 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths.

MOONTREE COTTAGE has one of the most beautiful views on the Outer Banks. While not completely ADA-compliant, the house works well for people with mobility concerns. There are only a few steps from the driveway to the main level, which contains the living room, dining room, kitchen, screened porch, deck and a master bedroom and bath. Two bedrooms on the upper level and a bedroom plus den on the lower level offer privacy for additional family members and/or friends.

This charming cottage is beautifully decorated and features a designer kitchen, Pine Cone Hill linens and spa bath products. Relax on the screened porch, or paddle in the sound from your private beach. Go crabbing or kayaking from the community dock next to the house.

The ocean is a short walk away (or you may drive and park at the neighborhood parking lot if you have a lot of gear to carry).

We generally offer a Friday - Friday schedule, as most people enjoy beating the painful weekend OBX traffic. We are open to other timing if available, especially in the fall, winter and spring. Shorter stays are available off-season as well.

About Polly Wessel

Polly and Dave currently divide their time between Duck, the New Hampshire Lakes Region and New Zealand. Dave is a former mayor of Duck and Polly helped to incorporate Duck as a town in 2002.

Polly Wessel purchased this house in 1999

Why Polly Wessel chose Duck

When we looked for a home on the Outer Banks, we knew we would be awake for the sunsets, so a sound view was our top priority. We love Duck for so many reasons - we especially love the walking-jogging-biking trail and the town park.

What makes this house unique

Nestled in the trees in a lovely quiet neighborhood, we feel that Moontree Cottage offers the feel of both beach and woods. Even on the hottest summer day, the trees provide shade. As this is our home for part of each year, we have updated it using high quality items, such as Restoration Hardware in the bathrooms, KitchenAid appliances, Pine Cone Hill Linens, etc. You should be able to find everything you need in the kitchen - including a KitchenAid Stand Mixer!

Outstanding vacation- perfect home!

  • 5 of 5

My family very much enjoyed our stay at Moontree Cottage. The home is beautiful, the location was convenient with excellent views and access to the sound, and we had the perfect amount of space for visitors throughout the week. The owners of the property our great to work with, very responsive and accommodating. I highly recommend staying at Moontree Cottage!

Best Vacation Ever!

  • 5 of 5

*The 9 day rental period was to just watch the traffic on changeover day...and not have to be in it.

*Our family of 7 ranged from 14 months to 67 years...and all thoroughly enjoyed Moontree and Duck.

*The Moontree layout worked so well. Baby and parents had the upstairs adjoining bedrooms, the other young couple had the privacy of the first floor suite and the Grandparents had the main floor bedroom close to all the action.

*As others noted, the furnishings, kitchen equipment, a/c and appliances worked well and made for a comfortable stay.

*The setting is awesome! Just looking out from the screened in porch was a highlight for toddler, grandpa and everyone in between. Our family members each got to indulge in some of their favorite activities: kayaking, cycling, surfing, fine dining, strolling around town and stores.

*Thanks for the toddler/baby equipment--crib, high chair, beach toys and child size chairs (a big hit).

*We brought kayaks from home and left them on the beach by the dock. It was a great way to explore the shoreline and get waterfront view of the houses...a favorite pastime of ours.

A wonderful, memorable vacation

We needed a get away

  • 5 of 5

Our whole experience from initial inquiry to the day we had to pack up and leave was top notch. Having lived on the Northern Banks, we know how peaceful sounside is and our experience was no exception. The beautiful old growth trees sheltered so many beautiful birds. Comfortable couches, great kitchen, wonderful breezes in all the rooms and a great dock with cupola to watch the sunsets. This was the most "homelike" place we have ever rented. Duck is the place to stay for convenience and Moontree Cottage was perfect.

Best Family Vacation Location This Side of the Moon!

  • 5 of 5

I have so many good things to say about Moontree Cottage, I don't know where to begin…

*Location: Secluded, quiet, retreat-like but within walking distance of the Sound, the Ocean and the center of Duck, including many restaurants and shops!

*View: Breathtaking (and I really mean breath-taking) view of sunsets over the Outer Banks Sound. The views in the morning and throughout the day are also very BEAUTIFUL.

*Layout of the house: Separate, private spaces and a beautiful, vaulted grand living room dining room area that overlooks the Sound. This allows privacy for different groups of guests in the same house. The lower level bedroom with a view of the sound is especially wonderful! All the bedrooms were wonderful, the beds very comfortable.

*Outdoor shower & Hot tub & gas grill: What a treat the beautiful outdoor shower is! (I am trying to figure out how to build one behind my house.) The hot tub was so relaxing and invigorating at the same time - with a view of the Sound too boot! The grill helped us to cook the best tuna I have ever had. Tuna has never tasted so good!

*Pier/Dock: The Duck town pier abuts Moontree Cottage. in a minute you can be out on the sound - day or night. What a treat! A great place to launch a kayak, paddle board, etc.!

*Very well equipped, functional and beautiful kitchen!

*Airconditioning system - kept the house beautifully cool!

***Overall: A most memorable experience. We stayed in the Fall, but I would imagine that the secluded nature of Moontree Cottage would be especially wonderful in the summer when Duck is brimming with folks. Moontree Cottage exceeded our expectations. Go for it!

Moontree Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's first trip to the OBX region and it was really an enjoyable experience staying at MoonTree. The sunsets from the decks are beautiful. The Cottage is well equipped and maintained, and the kitchen has everything you'll need for breakfast through lunch and dinner. The beach is across Duck road but there's a parking area that you have access to and the walk is very short. Everyone in the Tuckahoe community could not have been nicer. If you walk into Duck it's less than a mile and my wife and I made that our walk of the day. A lot to see in the town of Duck so the location of the cottage was great for that. All in all, we were really pleased.

Easter Break

  • 5 of 5

My family and another family enjoyed our Easter break at Moontree Cottage. The house was spacious and comfortable and well prepared for our arrival. Great location to many shops, activities and the town of Duck. Hot tub was not working at first but was repaired by mid week. Great response by the repair company. The had even left a not on the door prior to our arrival informing us of the repair plans. The pier and water access were great for kayaking. We we able to paddle up to the town of Duck from the house, use the public pier in town to tie up and tour and paddle back home. All very easy and convenient.

Owners provided excellent information about the house prior to arrival and also offered great information about shops and activities in the area.

Duck is such a quiet and peaceful town and still very close to all that Kitty Hawk and Nags Head have to offer is just a short drive away.
