Anything goes in Lake City – except stoplights
It’s a town with no stoplights, and it also happens to be the only town in Hinsdale County. Wildflowers add dazzling color to the San Juan mountain slopes—there are over 150 different species in the area alone. Waterfalls abound throughout Lake City, too, the most spectacular of which can be found in North Clear Creek Falls. Lake San Cristobal, the second largest lake in Colorado, is a great spot to watch for elk, moose, beavers, and other types of wildlife. You can also park at the marshy Red Mountain Gulch Day Use Area and take in the sunset—don’t be surprised if you spot a moose in the brush.

Fly into Telluride, CO (TEX-Telluride Regional), the closest airport, located 32.3 mi (52 km) from the city center. If you're unable to find a flight that fits your schedule, you might consider flying into Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which is 45.4 mi (73 km) away.
