NESTLED IN THE BEAUTIFUL SAN JUAN RANGE OF THE ROCKIES' WESTERN SLOPE, the Vandiver Cabin is a guaranteed spot for enjoying Colorado's best kept secret. Lake City is a small, riverside historic community that has escaped commercialization. Although this cabin has the comforts of three bedrooms, two baths, the internet, and a 42' LCD with satellite & DVD/VHS player, you'll be taken back in time to the days of the gold rush, wagon trails, and the historic Packer massacre.
This QUAINT SINGLE-STORY CEDAR CABIN lies in the Ball Flats less than one mile from the town center and only one block from the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. The cabin was built in the 1960's by Ed & Syllrene Vandiver after discovering the best fly-fishing in Colorado. The VANDIVER CABIN received MAJOR RENOVATIONS IN 2012, including new appliances, dishwasher, granite countertops, updated bathroom, new furniture & linens, and added porch amenities including outdoor seating, picnic table with umbrella, and a new gas grill. IN JUNE OF 2015, THE MASTER BATHROOM WAS FULLY REMODELED, including new tub with tile with safety bar, porcelain pedestal sink, custom V joint woodwork, rustic faux wood porcelain tile, and new linens.
There are THREE BEDROOMS each with a queen-sized bed. The first two bedrooms share a bath with a tub/shower off of the family room. The third, larger bedroom includes twin shaved pine bunk beds in addition to the queen and also has a private bath with shower. The kitchen, which has served many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners around the antique maple table, is amply supplied with cooking tools including a crockpot, pancacke griddle, blender, waffle maker, blender, mixer, food processor, and pots & pans of every shape and size. The cabin has an open floorplan with the kitchen connecting to the family room which is heated by an old fashioned Franklin wood-burning stove. Great for a chilly evening! The large front porch with outdoor seating encourages viewing of the moutain scenering while eating meals under the spruce and aspen trees. Washer and dryer are included in the cabin, connected to the back bedroom.
The TOWN OF LAKE CITY takes pride in having well-maintained walking & biking trails along the river. This cabin is just two blocks from the access point to this riverfront trail. These paths travel along the river and make for a fun morning walk with the birds and deer or an easy trip to the park, baseball field, local restaurants, churches, and local shops. There's even a hidden skateboard park! The cabin is conveniently close to the Lake City bakery which draws a crowd by 7 AM for their famous fruit pockets & cinnamon rolls (don't miss this!). The well-stocked country grocer store is just across the river.
There are 8-10 locally-owned restaurants with menus ranging from pizza with calzones & hand-breaded fried chicken to fine French dining. A dozen local shops make for a fun afternoon of discovering local artists and craftsmen, painters, & sporting goods. The personal feeling as you explore the town is like no other. The Cabin Fever Players (the local community theeater), Lake City Chorus, and old-fashined ice cream parlor make for enjoyable entertainment.
Some of Colorado's best HIKING AND JEEP/ATV TRAILS are found at Lake City's near-9,000 foot elevation. Explore waterfalls, cross rivers over log bridges, picnic while overlooking Lake San Cristobal, and climb area fourteeners with breathtaking views of wildflowers, marmots, grazing moose, and long-horn sheep. Locak jeep rentals can provide your 4-wheel access to the Alpine Loop via the infamous Cinnamon & Engineer's passes. This drive is along steep & austere mountainside paths and suitable for eager explorers or avid photographers, especailly in July & August when the wildflowers are blooming. These sights offer a new burst of color in September & October when the aspen leaves change to fall hues. The Alpine Loop provides access to Silverton, Colorado, which is known for its steam engine train ride to Durango. The Alpine Loop can be traveled in one day and is a do-not-miss, 'bucket list' experience. Of course, fishing is one of Lake City's greatest draws. Explore the rivers and lakes on your own or enlist a local fishing guide for a safe-bet fish fry that same evening.
The VANDIVER CABIN is smoke-free and welcomes well-behaved pets and owners. This cabin is available from spring until late fall, usually May 1st until October 31st. Inquire for LONG-TERM RATES for stays of 8 days or longer, especially perfect for watching the aspens change in September and October. THE FALL COLOR IS BREATHTAKING.
Owned and operated by MOUNTAIN MEMORIES, LTD, described by many as having Lake City's finest rentals with the special touches usually seen in the country's nicest B & B's. See our sister riverfront properties at VRBO #302010 and VRBO #959925! We'd love to have you.

My grandparents built the Vandiver Cabin in 1966, and we have been enjoying Lake City for summer vacations, spring break, and holiday gatherings ever since. Bedroom 3 (the back suite), referred to as the 'grandkids room,' was added on to the original cabin years later. The legacy has been shared down through the generations and continues to be the vacation-of-choice for our children!
Joslyn purchased this House in 2012
Why Joslyn chose Lake City
Mountainside beauty, 1 block from the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, access to pristine riverside walking paths leading to the town center with restaurants/shopping/churches, fantastic fly fishing just minutes away, amazing hiking (Cataract Gulch and Alpine Gulch are our family favorites). Wireless internet added in 2013.

Comfort & convenience in Lake City
We had a great stay for 9 nights at the Red Cabin. It's in a great location; easy stroll to the grocery store and Lake City Bakery, close enough to walk & bike everywhere in town, yet tucked away with some privacy. Direct access to hiking trails above town and you can hear the river running nearby. Nothing like the sound of the river - and owls - at night!
Lovely mature trees on the property. Deck has a nice view as does the kitchen window! - nice when you're washing dishes. We really enjoyed the expansive yard with lots of parking space and use of the garage; great for bikes & gear.
The wood stove drafts beautifully, so nice on a chilly morning or rainy night. This cabin is very well stocked w/ any type of kitchen utensil, dish or appliance you could need. Bravo on the sink disposal & the awesome pull-out faucet w/ sprayer - most cabins don't have. It was a pleasure cooking meals here, with plenty of counter space for prep.
The showers in both bathrooms were terrific, no end to the hot water and plenty of towels provided. We used the washer & dryer, and everything worked great. These things are important in the Colorado high country after long days of hiking, biking, fishing, etc.
Personally, I don't feel "Ralph Lauren" except for the front bathroom and adjacent bedroom, which are very nice. The middle bedroom is fine but pretty tight on space. The neon red carpet in that back bedroom suite is enough to make your hair stand on end. But it was so comfortable, and everything is so functional, that any quirks in the decor quickly fade away.
I would suggest removing the big red chest in the living room; there is too much furniture in there, and it would be awfully nice to have access to the front door right from the sofa. I would also exchange the LED bulbs for either yellower ones or incandescents; the greenish light from many of the fixtures is unpleasant. This is a little thing but none of us wanted to turn on the LED lights!
The furniture is very comfortable and the TV works easily - important in my book. Wifi worked great for all except my old iPhone 5, which wouldn't take the long # of characters in the password! - but that's on me, I'm a dinosaur.
This cabin is pricey compared to many that we've rented over 30 years, but it's worth it. Lots of value in all the comfort, convenience, and location. My husband & son really enjoyed it too. We'll be back!
We love this cabin- this was our 3rd stay.
This year, the patio furniture was in the garage and the paper products weren't stocked in the storage cabinet, so we went to LV to get tp and paper towels, but we bought Kleenex. There is also a leak in the fridge, so water would accumulate on a couple of shelves and in the drawers. Other than that, our stay was great! Plenty of parking, beautiful views, great kitchen, and great location. We're sad the price is going up~ Thanks for the memories!
We've enjoyed having your family stay with us for the past three summers! The property manager (and repairman) is available 24/7 to take care of you. Don't be afraid to call them, even if you need them to move the patio furniture for you. We supply a generous amount of toilet paper, paper towels, and tissue; however, renters may need to pick up a few items from time to time when their personal preferences exceed the supply provided. Fortunately, the leak you referred to was just the condensation from your groceries. I'm glad you find this cabin to be comfortable, well-stocked, and deserving of your repeat rentals. We appreciate your business! MM
So stickin' cute!!
House was so impressively equipped with everything we needed. Perfect size and very comfortable.
Only wish we had the furniture outside as the pictures indicated (locked in garage).
Loved The cabin. Everyone we met were nice & helpful.
The cabin was close to everything in town.
Beautiful as always
It was so good to see the cabin come into view after driving for nine hours. Once inside it was nice to sit down and relax in the comfortable living room. Everything was so nice and just like last year it didn't take long for us to settle in.
The cabin is so well stocked and livable. We had a great time and the new law change about OHV's made it so easy to get started on the trails.
We had a great time, thank you Joslyn for lending us your beautiful cabin.
The property was wonderful for our group of 6. It was very clean and supplies - dishes, bedding, etc. above and beyond. Even extras like spices, paper products (could have used a couple more rolls of toilet tissue) foil, plastic wrap were in included. The grill was a nice addition as were the chairs and front porch seating. Access to town, walking trails, etc. was great. Location was also very quiet.
