Lovely stone home with private garden
Casa La Vicinia is situated in one of the oldest private castles of northern Italy. The owners have lovingly restored three beautiful stone homes supplying them with all comforts.
Casa La Vicinìa has its own private garden, guaranteeing the privacy of the guests, who also have access to the gardens of the castle.
On the ground floor there is a dining/living area with a bed-sofa, armchair, several chairs, carpet, desk, small tables, cupboard, sat-tv, wooden table and chairs, drawer.
There is also a fully equipped kitchen.
From the dining/living area you have access on a lovely arched portico and on the garden for al fresco resting and eating. There are a wooden table and chairs, a round table with chairs, a BBQ and sun beds.
Please note that although there are 2 rooms on the first floor, due to bureaucratic reasons, only one may at present be used as a double bedroom, with its own bathroom with shower, sink and WC.
For the moment the other room may only be used as a storage room, with its own bathroom with sink, bidet, shower and WC.
For said bureaucratic reasons, the house may be rented by 4 people, but only 2 people have a full bedroom with bathroom, whilst the other 2 people will be accommodated on the ground floor behind a separé but may use the storage room and its bathroom with shower, sink, bidet and WC.
All efforts have been made to offer a wonderful stay.
The castle complex is formed by the main building, surrounded by a series of beautiful stone buildings once used as guards’ houses, administrative and judicial centre, stables, artisan workshop, granaries, archives, rice mill and tower.
On one side the main building is connected by an arch to the church of St. Nikolaus, formerly castle’s chapel which was donated to the village (catholic masses on Sundays) and on the other side there is the ancient tower.
The setting is really beautiful and the whole is surrounded by lovely gardens, crossed by spring-water streams and rivers.
Strassoldo is a precious gem of a lovely and still unknown region which is not overrun by tourists. In fact, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, has many important historical sites, a lovely nature with many different wonderful landscapes ranging from high mountains, through rolling hills and green plains to rock or sand beaches.
The castle is situated in a very central position from where it is easy to reach all these attractions.
Only to mention a few, #Venice is reachable in 1 hour's drive, the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia (the second biggest colony of Rome) in 10 minutes, the golden beach of Grado in 20 minutes, the beautiful town of Udine in 30 minutes, the marvellous Adriatic Gulf with the town/port of Trieste in 38 minutes, Slovenia in 35 minutes and Austria in 60 minutes.
The guests can relax, make very nice walks in the Friulan countryside, go biking through cute little rural villages, go swimming in the nearby Adriatic Sea and make nice day excursions to many interesting regional sites and towns.
The region also offers the possibility to taste excellent Friulan wines and food.

About Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo
Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo grew up between England, German, Austria and Italy and speaks fluent English, Italian, German and French. She lives between Wien (A) and Strassoldo (I) and manages her family estate, the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra, which belongs to the counts of Strassoldo since a thousand years. When she took over the task from her mother many years ago the castle was in a very bad condition and Gabriella put an enormous effort in restoring it, bringing it back to its ancient flair. In the last years she also restored three ancient stone houses, turning them into high quality holiday homes: La Vicinia (former administrative centre), Casa Rambaldo and Casa Artuico (former guards' houses).
Why Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo chose Strassoldo
The holiday homes at the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra offer the unique opportunity to breathe the flair of an ancient private castle and at the same time to visit a beautiful and still not well known area of Italy, ranging from high mountains, through rolling hills, green plains to rock and sand beaches.
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
La Vicinia and the other two holiday homes of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra are very well furnished and have every comfort. Each has its own private garden and access of the castle's main garden.

We simply call the place The Castle! It was everything we hoped for and more!
Strassoldo was our jumping off point for trips to Maniago, Triesta and Venezia. Gabrielle and Nidia have worked very hard for many years to turn this place into a N. Italy paradise. Easy to reach Cervignano to catch the train. Great to come back to in the evenings. Comfortable and very clean. A walk back in time. Several small restaurants within a few minute walk. And, a very convenient small supermarket with everything you could want to take back to the castle to cook an evening meal. We shared our time there with close friends for week and really didn’t want to leave. Highly recommended, especially to get away from a 24/7 life style. We’ll be back. Grazie! Grazie! PS...Thanks for the wonderful breads!
Loved our time!
What a beautiful and peaceful place! So enjoyed our time...the accommodations were great...really enjoyed the outdoor patio area and courtyards! Thanks for your wonderful hospitality!
Thank you so much for your nice review.
I'm happy you liked the atmosphere and the place. We loved having you as our guests and hope to have the pleasure to see you back:-)
Many warm regards from Strassoldo
A beautiful step back in time!!!
Our week in Strassoldo at La Vicinia was perfect! Beautiful gardens, cobblestone walkways, a river complete with water wheel, traditional foods in the quaint village restaurants, church bells, and a roomy two bedroom, two bathroom castle apartment all contributed to our desire to return as soon as possible. Our host, Gabriella, and her dear assistant, Nidia, made us feel like we were visiting family rather than Americans they had never met. The village is located within very close access to beach communities, historical villages with noted early Roman mosaics and ruins, wineries, Venice, the lagoons of the Adriatic, and other areas of interest. Yet, the village and the castle are an oasis of peacefulness and beauty.
Dearest Pat and Lynn,
I am so grateful and happy for the lovely review you left. It gives us energy to go on and improve ourselves.
It was lovely to have you as guests and to see that you enjoyed our place and this area that has so much to offer.
Sensitive people like you realize that there is a lot of hard renovation and maintenance work behind the curtains, although the place has an untouched flair.
Hoping to have the pleasure to have you back as our guests and friends we are sending many warm regards
Lella and Nidia
Wonderful location and bui a quiet corner of Italy
The accommodation was well within our expectations. Spacious bedrooms, nicely furnished, maintained and well equipped. The bathrooms were clean and adequate. And the bonus of all bonuses was our hosts. We simply could not ask for more, both Lella and Midia bent over backwards to make our stay a pleasant and memorable one. We had several wet days and how nice it was to be given a freshly baked pie as compensation for the bad weather. On other days were were given freshly baked bread, wine and chocolates. Despite the weather we were able to see the surrounding areas and particularly liked Grado, Palmanova. We managed to visit Udine in the pouring rain and catch up with a mosiac master. We highly recommend this property and everything it has to offer.
I am so happy you liked your stay in our home and that you found the location good nice and well situated for visiting so many interesting places.
For us it is important that our guest feel well and the comments are useful for eventual improvements.
We are really happy to hear that you would like to come back.
We wish you a lovely 2017!
Rundherum wohlgefühlt , freundlicher Empfang , Strassoldo insgesamt ein schönes Dorf!
La Vicinia is placed in the heart of the complex of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra (Upper castle of Strassoldo), one of the oldest castles of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the lovely most north-eastern region of Italy, bordering with Austria, Slovenia, the Adriatic sea and Veneto.
The small and quiet village of Strassoldo is in the spring-water area of the green Friulan lowlands, in a very central position, enabling guests to easily visit the area's main attractions, such as:
- Venice (1 hour's drive)
- The sun-island of Grado and its golden beach (20 minutes' drive).
Once the Austrian Empire's Summer resort, the place has an amazing historical center and here in addition to breathing the 'Mitteleuropean' flair of the past you can dive into the Adriatic sea and/or make a boat tours in the marvelous lagoon with its typical fishermen huts.
- The ancient Roman colony of Aquileia (15 minutes' drive), with its amazing basilica, lovely floor mosaics, excavations, port, criptas and museum
- The star-shaped fortress of Palmanova (5 minutes' drive), with its green hills and tunnels
- the ancient Longobard Duchy of Cividale del Friuli (20 minutes' drive) with its beautiful small temple, dome, Devil's bridge and museum. This little town is surrounded by lovely green hills crossed by the blue-green Natisone river where there are several nice restaurants to try.
The relaxing atmosphere of the place invites the guests to tank energy, enjoy the lovely gardens full of old trees and flowers, make nice walks in the flourishing countryside (partially on private grounds) and bike tours through the nearby cute little rural villages.
For shopping fans there's an interesting outlet with 90 brand shops only 5 minutes drive from the castle.
Last but not least, the region is famous for its good food combining Austrian and Slovenian flavors near to the borders and a variety of dishes from fragrant cheese and potato dishes to excellent fresh fish near to the coast.
Not to mention the wines, among which the white wines of the Collio area are Worldwide renown and the red wines are placing themselves in the highest ranks of the sector.
