About Daniel

Living in Switzerland, I fell in love this this marvelous place some years ago. The attraction of Manzanillo and its surrounding nature was so strong, that I decided to buy a lot there - in a refuge. That's just unique! 2005 the construction of Casa Fuentes was finished. Since then I'm staying there as much time in a year as possible. However, for many months a year this wonderful house stands free. So I decided to share the experience of living there with other people who like to live close to nature – while having all the amenities we are used to have at home too.

Daniel purchased this villa in 2005

Why Daniel chose Limon

Casa Fuentes is well equipped (full fledged kitchen, washing machine, drier), well kept and safe.

Great wildlife surrounds the dark villa

  • 4 of 5

The house is clean, comfortable and secure. The wildlife on the property was amazing (sloths, howler monkeys that wake you at 5am every day, toucans, hummingbirds, hawk, frogs, lizards) but in the caribe you will get these everywhere. Washer/dryer are a nice plus, but do NOT wash anything WHITE in the washer or it will turn orange due to the water.

Mario the caretaker meets you (Spanish only) to give a tour and keys. Housekeeper (Spanish only) checked up on us, as did the caretaker's son (English speaking) a few times so we felt like if something went wrong with the property, it would be taken care of.

The photos were taken before bars were added. There are bars all around the deck/dining/living area now, with a couple of sliding gates. Feels a bit like a pretty prison when you are there for a bit (family members got sick so we spent a bunch of time at the house), and it is very dark. Also, you can walk to the beach in 10 minutes *through private property*, but I advise you to go to the resort's reception the first time and tell them that you are staying at the Casa de las Fuentes and would like to walk to the beach via their property during your stay. This should be explained in a manual or email, but is not.

It is close to the road so if you sleep upstairs you hear traffic (not sure about downstairs) but it's not a super busy road. Needs a new & larger netting on the bed upstairs, which is wide open to the outdoors via loft to the open dining/living area. To open/close up the house and get/stash things in the safe (don't drop anything just outside the safe as it is covered in mouse poop) there are 6 keys, which seems excessive. For a short stay, this place is absolutely fine. Two weeks felt too long.

I am not sure why the upstairs is not split into a closed off bedroom and a sitting room (or even space for a couple more beds), but that's what I would suggest. Kitchen is adequate. Not a comfortable lounging seat in the house. No wifi, although you can access the web on a slow connection on a small Windows laptop provided.

Carlos in the cabina on the property is a nice enough guy.

Morning coffee with the monkeys, AWESOME

  • 4 of 5

Big, beautiful home with huge deck. It's close to beach and towns. Favourite time of the day...mornings... I LOVED waking up with the monkeys. Drinking my coffee on the deck and just listening to the wildlife.

Only thing I would change would be the upstairs. I would move bed to corner, put up screen then make a living space with tv, etc. Really no where to go on those rainy days.

Very large beautiful home

  • 4 of 5

This home was one of the more attractive properties we stayed at. The house is enormous. The bottom floor is completely open to the outside with metal, sliding gates for walls, and shades for privacy. There is some patio furniture here that you can relax on and watch for wildlife and listen to the sounds of the surrounding jungle. The kitchen, one of the bedrooms/bath, is also on this ground floor but can be closed up and locked up seperately from the open space I just described. All the rooms have large wooden windows that can be opened to the outside. The upstairs is an expansive loft with another bed/bath. The house can be locked up like a fortress (locks on all doors and windows) but can also be very airy when everything is open.

The house is mostly unused space and although it is beautiful hardwood and design, it was way too expansive for just the two of us. It would be more ideal for a family or group. There was no wi-fi access at the property other than a computer that was provided with a wi-fi stick that was basically only capable of internet surfing. We did not try to use it. The listing also said there was a dryer available but we never saw one. The house was very clean and well stocked with everything you could need, including a safe. There is a caretaker that met us there initially to give us keys and show us how all the locks worked. He does not speak any English but hand gestures seemed to work for all of us just fine. His name is Mario and lives off site but was available by cell phone if needed. The house is a short walk from the tiny town of Manzanillo and a beautiful bike ride or 10 minute cab ride from Puerto Viejo. There are no cabs in Manzanillo so if you need one, you need to hire one from Puerto Viejo. Most businesses in either town are happy to call a cab for you.

Although our stay was wonderful, our biggest issue was that there was another local, Carlos, that lives on the property in a very small house. He seemed very nice but whenever we went out on the upper balcony to enjoy the view, he was usually there watching us so we felt like our privacy was somewhat limited. Overall, I would recommend this property for the size if you need space, and the incredible security of the house when locked. The house is off the main road so although you can hear the ocassional car go by, you cant see the road and the jungle sounds drown most noise out anyway. We saw 2 sloths and toucans on the property.

Luxury camping

  • 5 of 5

It's hard to explain the casa if you've never seen anything similar but I always loved to go camping and this can be described as a luxury version of it. It's a big (2 decent bed and bathrooms), well maintained but open house. It's situated in a part of jungle so you'll be part of it all and jungle will sing you to sleep. It's a magical experience enjoying nature from so close while being in a well protected environment. Also the owner and housekeeper are very friendly and are their to guarantee you'll be having an excellent time. Recommended.

Beautiful Jungle Home

  • 5 of 5

Wow, What an incredible experience. We loved our relaxing vacation at this large home surrounded by gardens and 100 year old trees. Minutes from the beach and inside the wildlife refuge. We looked so forward to waking up each morning to the sounds of howler monkeys and beautiful birds.

The owner installed a large metal gate around the home, this is a great feature that allows the house to remain open but very secure.

The owner Daniel was a pleasure to deal with and Mario (the building manager) was awesome.

Looking forward to staying again

Thanks,

Kevin and Jennifer

Une maison très agréable.

  • 5 of 5

Cette maison est très grande et vraiment bien conçue. Elle dispose d'un grand jardin. Les plages sont à quelques minutes mais il est préférable d'avoir une voiture pour se déplacer.
