About this property
The Townsman: Meriwether Room
Inspired by a sense of adventure and yet grounded with a modern, Southern elegance, the Meriwether Room, located on the second floor and is parking/alley facing, lets you know you've arrived at a highlight of your travels. (**Please note the Townsman is currently undergoing a "refresh" ready Feb 1st 2025. So there may be some furnishings, fixtures or other minor adjustments from the existing photos. New photos will be uploaded soon!**) This exceptionally styled room is situated in Townsman Hotel. It is unlike your typical hotel. That's why we call it the 'unhotel'. Poised just above or in the middle of Charlottesville's bustling and historical Downtown Mall or the walking mall packed with restaurants, bars, shops, and more. It is in between Mudhouse Coffee and Rockfish Brewing Company, with no staff and no front desk, which feels like a well-kept secret right in the center of all the action. Instead of charging you for things you'll never use, we've pared ourselves down to the essentials: an incredible location; four uniquely-designed rooms; and great prices. Once you book with us, a personal code will be provided for access and all you have to do is show up. No check-in. No hassles. Along with an exclusive access to a nearby business and social space, as we've partnered with the Common House, which is free for our guests.
Explore the greater Charlottesville area and discover some of the best places to dine, shop, relax, and do a variety of activities such as hiking, biking, shopping, enchanting night life, and navigating through historical sites such as Thomas Jefferson's home of Monticello and the well-known Rotunda, all right below your feet. Start your day with breakfast at The Nook, enjoy wine tastings at local vineyards, and dine at The Alley Light with options for post-dinner drinks or dancing. You may also grab coffee and a workout before relaxing at Halo Salt Spa, enjoy lunch at Citizen Burger Bar, take a self-guided brewery tour, and wrap up with dinner at the Dairy Market and a nightcap at Miller's.

Awesome location, easy booking, checkin and checkout. Room is nicely decorated with great amenities, particularly the Nespresso machine. Only issue was the comfort of the mattress.
Great place to stay and the location is amazing. Walk out your door and you are on the Mall for dining and shopping.Parking was close by and you have your own designated parking space. Would recommend The Townsman for anyone looking to stay in Charlottesville.

The Merriwether Room at The Townsman was a calming, updated retreat in a great location. It was convenient to be able to walk to the many restaurants and shops on and nearby the Downtown Mall as well as easily drive to other Charlottesville locations.
Reserved parking close to the room, with convenient place to unload vehicle. Room was clean and nicely appointed. Location is excellent, right on the downtown mall. Some other reviews mentioned noise from nightlife, but we did not experience any issues.
Property is in a convenient location at the pedestrian mall in Charlottesville. Great walkable location, room is spacious, clean, and a comfortable bed. Since it is located downtown it is loud in the evening outside the balcony.
Our anniversary weekend in Charlottesville was exceptional, due in no small part to our stay in the Meriwether Room at The Townsman. This “unhotel” concept delivers the perfect blend of independence and elegance, with seamless access to everything Charlottesville has to offer. The location couldn't be better, with local restaurants, wine bars, a historic movie theater, and so much more right outside the door! The room itself was beautifully decorated and spotless, with a comfortable king bed, private balcony, sitting area, and free WiFi. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a stylish stay with total autonomy and unbeatable access to Charlottesville’s best. We’ll definitely be back!
Our room (Meriwether) was a wonderful little nook. Very comfortable and quiet. It was clean as a new penny and everything was updated and in excellent repair. The little deck was nice, but open to the one right next door. May make some new friends if you're so inclined. The stairs to access the rooms are steep and make a turn that might be challenging for anyone with mobility or cardio-respiratory issues. The facility is not wheelchair accessible. Also note that parking is about 2 city blocks away and unsecured. We did not experience any issues, but being residents of a large city where auto break-ins and thefts are commonplace it was a bit unnerving. Lots of homeless hang out in the "downtown mall." Most are passive, but there are a few panhandlers and some obviously suffering from mental illness. If you don't wish to interact with them just pass on by and don't make eye contact.Since we were there early in the week (Monday and Tuesday) many of the shops and restaurants were closed or closed early. Just the nature of the area. Seems like it would be more lively on the weekend. Hopefully the restaurant personnel would be a bit more congenial if busier. Most seemed bothered by having customers come in. (especially at "The Iron" - not a good experience there)We would stay at the Townsman again, but pack lighter and park at a secured pay-to-park lot and Uber to get around. It would be worth the extra expense especially if you have a "nice" vehicle.
