Great Family Thanksgiving Weekend
Our family of 18 had a great time over the Thanksgiving weekend at Heidi's retreat. We ate, played cards and board games. We walked to the tennis courts and basketball courts. All 18 of us were easily able to find a bed to sleep in right in the house so we did not use the additional space in the basement ( my gang didn't like the basement smell). We brought up all the supplies needed for cooking our big Thanksgiving feast. However, I think we could have gotten the job done with the things supplied in Heidi's kitchen. We found the cabin pretty clean - but not dutch clean - but we took care of that quickly. Sounds like we are pretty fussy - we probably are. Would we use Heidi's cabin again - sure! We loved the area - beautiful. Note: the trips to the dump were special because they played" Handel's Messiah" over the loudspeakers - pretty classy!!
A beautiful spacious place.
Heidi's Mountain Retreat was a beautiful relaxing place to stay. We enjoyed the spacious cabin. It would be a good place to come back to with our kids and grandkids. The kitchen was well stocked with all kinds of cookware, we were not missing a thing. The rooms were so nice and cute. The big porch on the back of the house were a nice place to hang out.
Big and beautiful cabin! Plenty of rooms for large group
Heidi's Retreat is a beautiful place to stay for large families and very well decorated. Huge master bathrooms and very well lit which I like. The private rooms downstairs are a plus. Lots of parking space in the front. We're thankful we didn't have a "bear in mind" experience. The general store is walking distance as well as the club. Heidi is readily available for any questions. Thanks, Heidi!
Large House perfect for big groups
I came here with my non-profit board of directors for our annual summer trip.
This place was big, and definitely had enough people for 20.
The bunk beds are not the most stable, so we were uncomfortable having a grown adult sleep in the top bunks but we had enough space and beds to sleep everyone regardless.
Lots of room both in the backyard and in the living room, plenty for us to work in groups as well as meet up all together.
The fridge is probably due for an upgrade and the AC, while it kept the bedroom areas relatively cool, did not keep the living room very cool.
Overall, we would probably come back although we might arrange for a cooler season
Thanks for the review. So many people don't bother leaving one. One thing though is wrong here; we don't have AC in the house. It's just a fan blowing room temperature air thru the central heating system. That's why we leave a portable AC unit in the great room for the hot summer days. It has worked well for groups who need to stay and work inside during a heatwave. I don't think it gets much use. The outdoor air is cool at night year round and that's why it may feel like AC was on.
In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with the fridge (it's very typical side by side model) and no need for upgrading.
Bear in Mind
Overall, this was an enjoyable stay with the exception of one significant issue. The house was large and well maintained. We had more than enough space for 8 adults and 5 children under the age of 8. There were lots of toys for for the children and games for the adults. The kitchen was well stocked with appliances, cooking utensils including pots and pans, cups, glasses, flatware, and plates. It was warm in the house despite the fans and air-conditioner in the living room. But access to the pool helped make the temperatures less of an issue. We did have one major concern. We left a closed tupperware container that held dry dog food in the front foyer that attracted a BEAR! It came up the porch and into the foyer and carried off the container. This occured around 8 pm one night. We heard from other guests that many homes had been "visited" by this bear. It was unnerving to say the least. When we arrived at Heidi's Retreat, we left the doors and windows open at the suggestion of the owner. After that night, we kept everything closed which undoubtedly added to the warmth in the house. We feel that we should have been made aware of the bear situation before we rented the property. We learned that there are deterrents to bear visits which we would have utilized if we had been informed.
I'm sure it was very unnerving to see a bear in the mudroom snatching a container. I have never encountered a bear anywhere in Pine Mountain, but do hear others have. Unfortunately, I wasn't informed by the property association either about the increased bear situation; and not being local, I didn't think it was anything more than usual. We always warned our quests about leaving stuff in cars and outside. I now send everyone a special bear warning with detailed info how to keep the house safe so bears are not attracted to it. At least in the winter they hibernate and no one has to worry then.
Plenty of space for large group
We had a college summer retreat here and all of our students loved the house. There was plenty of beds to sleep on for our group of 20 and even more floor space if we had an even larger group. During our stay, we did endure a heat wave, but it was tolerable with the windows open, fans and plenty of drinking water.
Heidi was very friendly and quick at providing information about the house and answering any questions we had regarding our stay.
I enjoyed having Maison's university group at our house. They were sweet kids.
We have a portable AC unit for the great room to be used on the hottest days. A prior group, a tech company, who had a week-long training to it's employees said it worked very well so they could stay inside and conduct the training. We were able to upgrade the internet so such high-speed that such training was successful for that reason also. Internet used to be a problem here but the company upgraded their cables just recently and provide much better service.
Snow play, sledding and cross country skiing in winter. If snow level is too high for us at 5000'; there is Mt. Pinos with a nordic ski center 15 minute drive away at 8000' often has snow till April. It's also a haven for astronomers.
