Frequently Asked Questions:

1) IS THE CALENDAR UP TO DATE? DO YOU HAVE AVAILABILITY FOR OUR DATES?

*YES, the calendar is always up to date! If it says that it hasn't been updated for a few days, that just means that we haven't made changes to it recently. There is not another calendar anywhere. If it says we are booked, we are booked! If it says we have an opening, we'd love to have you stay with us!

2) DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN FIREWOOD?

*YES, you should bring your own firewood. There is a woodshed that *may have* wood in it. If there is some left, you are welcome to use it. However, we are having an ongoing issue with theft of the wood by both guests and an undetermined third party so when it's gone it will not be replaced. ONLY the fireplace and fire pit are approved for fires. The wood stove is non-functional and may not be used.

3) ARE TOWELS AND BEDDING PROVIDED?

*YES, both towels and bedding are provided.

4) CAN WE HAVE A PARTY AT THE CABIN? CAN WE SMOKE?

*NO, under no circumstances will smoking or house parties be allowed. Large family reunions need to be discussed in advance.

5) DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN COFFEE AND FILTERS?

*YES, you need to bring your own coffee and filters. There is a Mr. Coffee brand coffee pot if you would like to use it.

6) IS THERE ENOUGH PARKING FOR MY VEHICLE AND TRAILER?

*YES, there is plenty of parking. The driveway goes in a huge circle so trailers do not need to backed in and turned. There is room for at least 10 trucks with trailers, but of course there will never be that many, as parties are not allowed!

7) DO YOU HAVE A GRILL? IS IT OPEN IN THE WINTER?

*YES, there is a charcoal grill available but depending on the depth of snow it may be hard to access in the winter. There is also a gas grill on the back deck with a spare propane tank in the front closet(usually). The spare propane has 'disappeared' several times, so if you definitely want to grill it is safest to bring charcoal.

8) DO I NEED TO BRING TOILET PAPER?

*There is an initial supply of toilet paper and paper towels provided. If your party needs a large amount, please bring additional paper products with you.

9) IS THERE A STOVE AT THE CABIN FOR COOKING?

*There is both a gas stove with an oven as well as a microwave. There is not a dishwasher and guests are asked wash any dishes that are used.

10) DO YOU HAVE INTERNET ACCESS?

*NO, we do not have internet access and cell access is limited at the cabin depending on your carrier. (Owner Nikki has AT&T and she has little/no coverage at the cabin. Owner Mark has Verizon and his coverage is better but not great.)

11) WHAT ABOUT WILDLIFE?

*YES, there is plenty of beautiful wildlife in our area. There was a bear sighting at the cabin in 2014 due to guests leaving trash outside instead of in the bear-proof receptacle (not allowed!). Whitetail deer and wild turkey are the most common visitors. This is a cabin set on 80 acres of otherwise undisturbed pure Michigan wilderness so this of course an abundance of wildlife including but not limited to whitetail deer, rabbit, fox, coyote, otter, mink, turkey, grouse, etc. Always observe from a distance and exercise common safety sense. In addition, it is normal in northern Michigan when the weather starts to become cold that wildlife will start seeking out warm areas to winter. On occasion particularly in the fall, we will have a field mouse or two that tries to make his winter home in the cabin. Again, this is not a reflection on the cleanliness of the cabin but a normal annual occurrence in the northwoods. We do have repellent stations in place but one still may be seen on rare occasion. Black flies and mosquitos are other common pests in the northwoods and you may see some in the windows, in particular if the doors have been left open without the screen.

Of course if you have other questions you are always welcome to contact us.

About Nikole Adamson

The cabin is owned by brother and sister team, Mark and Nikki Adamson. This cabin was their childhood home and it was built from the ground up by their parents, Karl and Carolyn (shown in photo). It took every weekend over the course of four years to complete. Karl was a native of Watersmeet and wanted to bring his family back to the simpler, more honest life offered in rural Michigan. The only thing in the home that our parents did not build is the fireplace and rocks laid by the front door. Dad always said he 'didn't want to practice in the middle of the living room'. Both Karl and Carolyn have passed on now but their memory lives on in this beautiful cabin and location.

About the owners:

Owner Nikki Adamson resides in Dallas, GA. If you call with a question or for help with a reservation, you will most likely talk with her. She has been married to husband Cory Schaubs for 10 years and she is a general dentist. Nikki and Cory enjoy camping and the outdoors, target shooting, archery, and travel. They spend a week vacation every summer up north improving the cabin. Nikki and Cory have two fur-children, a three-legged German Shepherd named Sophia, and a mixed breed rescue cat named Chloe.

Owner Mark now lives in Lake Villa, IL. He handles more of the repairs and cabin maintenance. Mark is an electrical lineman and has been married to his wife, Lynn, for 10 years. They have one wonderful son, Reid. Mark and his family also enjoy camping, the outdoors and Reid's sporting events. Their dogs, Levi and Ellie, complete the family.

After the early passing of our parents, we were not ready to sell the place that we still call home. After much thought and discussion, we decided to make Simpler Times Cabin a place that others can come enjoy too. You'll quickly see why so many people come to visit our area and why we wanted to share it with you.

Nikole Adamson purchased this cabin in 1982

Why Nikole Adamson chose Upper Peninsula

Look closely at the cabin and you will see the love, sweat and tears that were spent building this home. The logs are hand-peeled red pine timber, and the chinking was placed inch-by-inch with little nails by our mother. The cabinets are handmade with tongue and groove lumber, and the open ceilings offer and open yet cozy feel. The water is from a spring-fed well and so incredibly pure. The air is clean, the seclusion is spectacular and the scenery speaks for itself.

What makes this cabin unique

This property is an authentic log cabin and was actually built as a three-bedroom home. For this reason, it is much more spacious and well-appointed than many other rental cabins.

Beautiful, private setting...awesome cabin

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the privacy along the river and the setting tucked away from the road. The cabin was spacious with the highest quality furnishings. Everything we needed. We will be back.

Almost perfect getaway!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I were traveling across the UP, and this was our base camp for 3 days. The cabin is beautiful, clean, and modern yet rustic. The setting is amazing with the Ontonagon River in the back yard and 80 private acres. The appliances are all up to date, the grills in the back are perfect, the bedrooms are nicely sized and the bathroom is better than most Northwoods cabins. This would be a 5 star review if it wasn't for two things: the flies, and random, unannounced visitors. I have dealt with these UP flies before, so I knew what to expect, the wife on the other hand was a little freaked out. Once we fly-bombed the house in the first few hours, they were fine the rest of our stay. The only other negative was the abnormal amount of visitors ( both via 4 wheeler, and truck). I understand the cabin is on the atv trail but there's absolutely no reason for people to come driving down into the driveway and then leaving. The owners mentioned they've had a problem with people stealing firewood, I wonder if that's what some of these people were expecting to do until they saw us. Regardless, we will definitely be returning, hopefully with the dogs next time!

Fantastic cabin in the middle a National Forest!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place! It's quiet with nature right outside the door. The owner is exceptionallly nice and very responsive. The cabin is clean and very, very well stocked. Every comfort of home is present. It's spacious but cozy. We have rented many cabins- we can honestly say this one is the best. We appreciate that the owner is so thoughtful about making guests feel welcome! Thank you!

Amazing!!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cabin and will be back! Our trip was amazing and my boys had so much fun in the river! We had tons of fun hiking and checking out all the lakes around the area. We even caught some trout and they were delicious. Having the book provided with all the area attractions and parks was very helpful. Very clean and peaceful place to stay for a perfect getaway. I recommend brining lots of bug spray but so beautiful in the location!

First Impression: AMAZINGLY SURPRISED!

  • 4 of 5

This log cabin in the woods was more than what the pictures show on the website. It's decorated with all the mandatory whimsical UP touches. Very spacious for the humans and for the dogs, they had plenty of run around room and places to investigate. For us, personally, it was a bit of a drive everyday into Iron River to visit family, but we knew that going in. Had a situation during our stay which couldn't be remedied, but we did have a prompt reply/action from the owner. Hoped to see some wildlife, but no luck other than a chipmunk! Would recommend highly, thumbs up, stamped seal of approval, and most of all, thank you to the owners!

Property is beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

The only improvement I could offer advice to, having experienced a terrible storm and power outage shortly after arriving, is emergency contact and power company phone number near the location of the phone. An outdoor hose would have been helpful for a couple different things too. Luckily we had flashlights with us but maybe not everyone would so possibly some sort of battery lantern or flashlights available would be nice. The cabin is fully stocked with very nice dishes and enough pots and pans, etc. the cabin is clean and again very beautiful.

Simpler Times Cabin is located on 80 secluded acres in beautiful Watersmeet, MI. There are an abundance of activities in the area, or ample opportunities to just sit and relax.

The Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River crosses the back yard for immediate access to fishing or canoeing, and the snowmobile trail crosses the driveway - no need to go anywhere to access the trail!

In the area, the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Chippewa offers a beautiful casino complex with gambling, bingo, golf, and restaurant. Bond Falls, always a favorite, is close by as well. We have information in the cabin for those interested in the nearby Paulding Mystery Light, Sylvania Wilderness Area, canoe and boat rentals, cross country skiing, Watersmeet Trout Hatchery and Ottawa National Forest Visitor Center.

Within an hours drive you can see Old Victoria Mining Community, Caledonia Mine, Lake of the Clouds, Little Girl's Point, multiple downhill ski hills, ski jumping and many scenic drives. This is a great central base to see the western U.P.!
