About Dorothy Dean

I've lived in New Mexico for 35 years, loving it the entire time.

Dorothy Dean purchased this house in 1994

Why Dorothy Dean chose Cañada de los Alamos

Close to town but has the old world feeling of the Santa Fe I first met in 1979. Quiet, fresh mountain air; I walk up my road and I am in the Santa Fe National Forest. Beautiful views of the mountains the entire drive out.

What makes this house unique

The lights of the city are occluded which makes twice as many stars visible in the night sky. I love watching meteor showers from my hot tub! It is exquisitely quiet and peaceful and only 15 to 20 minutes to the plaza all along a graceful mountain road without traffic lights and only a few stop signs, no traffic!

Beautiful home to get away

  • 5 of 5

This home is very comfortable, and we immediately felt at ease. The view from the back patio, and the windows in the bedroom were amazing. The hot tub was hot and easily accessible. We brought our own food, and everything else we needed was already there.

Beautiful home. Well supplied. Fantastic hot tub. Beautiful, mostly private property.

The house is lovely. The sofa bed was the most comfortable and easiest to use of any other we've encountered. Bedding was ample, soft, and warm. Kitchen was well supplied with several coffee-making options, and the available pantry was diverse and well supplied with spices, seasonings, and basics. The owner supplied 5 gallons of bottled water in the kitchen. The owner was also very quick to respond to inquiries while we were in the home and was helpful, friendly, and informative. She also set up and decorated a Christmas tree for us! Every morning we loved watching the birds as they enjoyed the bird feeders and water structure. Our kids had a wonderful time playing and exploring around the house. The hot tub is great too, tucked down in an area surrounded by trees but with a clear view of the millions of stars you can see at night. We saw at least half a dozen shooting stars. I'd love to see the place in the spring or summer when all the plants are green and vibrant.

Well kept property with beautiful landscaping. Very quite and perfect for a couple or family.

My wife and I stayed here over a long weekend for our 23rd anniversary, and it was nothing but perfect! We absolutely loved the location and setup of the property. Outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, but still close enough if you need to run to the store or want to head down to the square. Dorthy is very nice and easy to deal with and has done a great job decorating and stocking this home with everything you need. It is so quite and peaceful, a perfect place for a little bird watching and soaking in the hot tub. I definitely will recommend this place to others, and will be back again soon!

Loved our stay! Wish we were back under the gorgeous midnight blue Santa Fe skies!

My Husband and I found the perfect get-away for our 1st year wedding anniversary. Staying at Dorothy's cabin retreat was just what we needed to relax and get away. The area in the back with hot tub is very relaxing at the end of a busy day of shopping. Fun experience. The only thing I would have liked is a full size mirror. Not a negative, just stating it would be nice to have had. Thank you Dorothy! Hope to come back soon. Jody and Steve Suverkrubbe

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to send a review, Jody! I very much appreciate it. I will look into the full length mirror idea. Maybe something that could be mounted onto the closet door. I hope you'll be back!! Dorothy

Beautiful, quiet, and relaxing but close to town

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful, relaxing place Tranquilo! is. We felt as though we were far away from civilization, but still only 15 minutes to the Plaza in Santa Fe. And as we lay back in the hot tub to stare at the beautiful stars, we felt even further away. The house is rustic but very comfortable, and the owner Dorothy was incredible to deal with. The house doesn't have air conditioning, but even in late July we didn't need it.

While all the restaurants and sights in Santa Fe are easy to find, and easy to see reviews on, if you like history one place you don't want to miss is El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum just south of Santa Fe.

Two more mustn't-miss museums are the Georgia O'Keefe Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. Take docent-guided tours of both, of possible.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jim! El Rancho de las Golendrinas is a living museum owned by the descendants of Lenora Curtin. It is a Danish model of teaching by experiencing. Very fun and the docents are really well trained! So glad you went there. A section of the Santa Fe botanical garden is on the frontage road that parallels the road to Golandrinas. Next time you come, take a walk through there on Saturday or Sunday morning. It is part of the same property. Docents are available there too. Hope you'll be back! Autumn is beautiful!
