About Dorothy Dean

I've lived in New Mexico for 35 years, loving it the entire time.

Dorothy Dean purchased this house in 1994

Why Dorothy Dean chose Cañada de los Alamos

Close to town but has the old world feeling of the Santa Fe I first met in 1979. Quiet, fresh mountain air; I walk up my road and I am in the Santa Fe National Forest. Beautiful views of the mountains the entire drive out.

What makes this house unique

The lights of the city are occluded which makes twice as many stars visible in the night sky. I love watching meteor showers from my hot tub! It is exquisitely quiet and peaceful and only 15 to 20 minutes to the plaza all along a graceful mountain road without traffic lights and only a few stop signs, no traffic!

Loved our stay! Wish we were back under the gorgeous midnight blue Santa Fe skies!

My Husband and I found the perfect get-away for our 1st year wedding anniversary. Staying at Dorothy's cabin retreat was just what we needed to relax and get away. The area in the back with hot tub is very relaxing at the end of a busy day of shopping. Fun experience. The only thing I would have liked is a full size mirror. Not a negative, just stating it would be nice to have had. Thank you Dorothy! Hope to come back soon. Jody and Steve Suverkrubbe

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to send a review, Jody! I very much appreciate it. I will look into the full length mirror idea. Maybe something that could be mounted onto the closet door. I hope you'll be back!! Dorothy

Dorothy is a very attentive host and the house is so comfortable and quiet, we felt at home immediately. The hot tub and the night sky are both relaxing and fascinating. Highly recommended - we are looking forward to another visit!

Beautiful, quiet, and relaxing but close to town

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful, relaxing place Tranquilo! is. We felt as though we were far away from civilization, but still only 15 minutes to the Plaza in Santa Fe. And as we lay back in the hot tub to stare at the beautiful stars, we felt even further away. The house is rustic but very comfortable, and the owner Dorothy was incredible to deal with. The house doesn't have air conditioning, but even in late July we didn't need it.

While all the restaurants and sights in Santa Fe are easy to find, and easy to see reviews on, if you like history one place you don't want to miss is El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum just south of Santa Fe.

Two more mustn't-miss museums are the Georgia O'Keefe Museum and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture. Take docent-guided tours of both, of possible.

Owner's Response: Thanks Jim! El Rancho de las Golendrinas is a living museum owned by the descendants of Lenora Curtin. It is a Danish model of teaching by experiencing. Very fun and the docents are really well trained! So glad you went there. A section of the Santa Fe botanical garden is on the frontage road that parallels the road to Golandrinas. Next time you come, take a walk through there on Saturday or Sunday morning. It is part of the same property. Docents are available there too. Hope you'll be back! Autumn is beautiful!

Perfect Santa Fe getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved our stay here! It’s truly a beautiful house in a stunning location. I actually saw the milky way from the upstairs bedroom window! The house was very clean, super comfortable and charming, had everything we needed to cook and do all our regular stuff, and is only a 15 minute or so drive down a very pretty road to everything Santa Fe has to offer. The hot tub was fabulous, and the location just lovely. A great place to enjoy all of the Santa Fe area – both the town and the amazing outdoors! We really couldn’t have asked for better. Our host was generous, kind, and helpful. Thank you Dorothy!

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Tranquilo. The area was quiet and only 15 minutes from Santa Fe. It was lovely to spend the day in Santa Fe and then return to the tranquility of this home in the evening. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. We especially loved the hot tub and the outdoor spaces. Dorothy was great to work with.

Lovely quiet secret out of Santa Fe

  • 5 of 5

A nice house with adobe walls in a quiet area just about 15 min from Santa Fe. Lovely garden with your own privat whirlpool and a Weber Gas Grill. We stayed 4 nights and loved the hiking opportunities in this area. We would like to come back.
