About Dorothy Dean
I've lived in New Mexico for 35 years, loving it the entire time.
Dorothy Dean purchased this House in 1994
Why Dorothy Dean chose Cañada de los Alamos
Close to town but has the old world feeling of the Santa Fe I first met in 1979. Quiet, fresh mountain air; I walk up my road and I am in the Santa Fe National Forest. Beautiful views of the mountains the entire drive out.
What makes this House unique
The lights of the city are occluded which makes twice as many stars visible in the night sky. I love watching meteor showers from my hot tub! It is exquisitely quiet and peaceful and only 15 to 20 minutes to the plaza all along a graceful mountain road without traffic lights and only a few stop signs, no traffic!

Little piece of Santa Fe heaven
Had a great stay, I felt like everything needed was provided. Dorothy was very responsive before and during our stay. We enjoyed Santa Fe and Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta during our visit and hope to return someday!
My personal Zen space for awhile
My wife and I really enjoyed staying at this place on our vacation to Colorado and New Mexico. It was a great retreat each day after visiting places in the area. We liked sitting out on the back patio in the late afternoon just relaxing or using the hot tub. I even sat in the hot tub by myself one night just looking at the stars and pondering our trip so far. We used the fire pit a couple times too. It was so peaceful out there!
The house was a little quirky compared to many of the other homes I've enjoyed through VRBO, but very interesting with all the various art pieces throughout. Lots of character! The bedroom upstairs is sort of a retreat by itself with all the room and its own bathroom. We quickly got used to not having cable tv and a good internet connection. Its good to get away from that for awhile. There is a stereo to listen to but only one speaker worked on it. We grilled out a couple times and cooked all our breakfasts at the house. The kitchen was well stocked but we did miss not having a microwave oven.
Dorothy, the owner stopped by on our first night for a bit. It was nice meeting and talking to her. She always made sure that she was available by phone or text if we needed anything.
Now that we are home in the big city, we think back to being at this special place and wishing we could be out on the back patio in the peace and quiet.
Hold onto that vacation peace!
Very beautiful and quiet
Everything was great! The property is very well landscaped and the layout is wonderful. The house is very nice and accommodating. All the comforts of a home. Thank you for letting us stay at your property.
You’re always welcome to come back! I’m glad you enjoyed your stay.
Exactly what we were hoping to find
My wife and I had the most relaxing wonderful time staying at this house. We wanted something out of the city in the mountain area where we could relax and enjoy the great scenery. We were so pleased and thankful we found this house. Dorothy was very accommodating and available for anything we needed. We will rent again next visit. Jeff & Ellen
Thanks Jeff! I look forward to your return!
The spirit of Santa Fe reveals itself at this lovely property.
We spent our days hiking in the mountains surrounding Santa Fe. In the evening we cooked dinner in the well equipped kitchen and enjoyed dining outside on the patio. The hot tub was wonderful at the end of the day. The night sky was unforgettable. Don’t come here if you are looking for the seamless experience provided by a corporate hospitality company. This place has wonderful personality and demands that you slow down, take a breath and remember what is important.
I didn’t want to leave and I want to go back!
We had a wonderful time at this home; short drive into Santa Fe and a place where you couldn’t wait to get back to! The home is totally private and quiet, fully equipped and enchanting like New Mexico is supposed to be! Mornings on the patio with hummingbirds and many others coming in to the feeders and water fountain was just plain blessed! Night sky with stars that cover every corner of the universe speaks peace like only Santa Fe can! This place is like the home that home should be. We used the kitchen, we grilled on the deck, we loved it all!
Suggestions? CELL phone reception bad at the house but I connected fine with the calls I needed to make.
The sound system could be upgraded: I just wanted to plug in my phone and hear my music but couldnt. Bring your own speaker or listen to the cds available there( a lot of them).
The tv system was hard to figure out with a bunch of different remotes laying around...
Not of that detracted from this wonderful clean house and the Santa Fe experience however!
Very hard to leave, and go back to Ohio!
Don’t stay in some hotel in Santa Fe; you won’t regret renting this house!
I do hope you'll return someday. I'm sorry you didn't ask about the stereo and tv, you can just plug your device into the aux cord that is laying on top of the receiver and the two remotes that control the tv and roku are right next to the tv. Can't and don't want to do anything about the cell phone reception. Most of my guests enjoy the reality of not being available 24/7. The internet is slow, but it is the fastest speed available there. It is a real sanctuary where one can get away from the world of electronic devices and relax. I do hope you'll return some day. I was dismayed to receive my first less than 5 star rating. I hope anyone reading this review will be a good match for a quiet retreat in the mountains near Santa Fe. ps, there is a landline at the house. Best wishes!
