About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms + 2 Lofts, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 11)

La Grivette is a stunning 300-year-old stone house, situated just outside the tiny village of Sainte Colombe, yet a few kilometres from the ancient fortress town of Duras. The property is secluded and private, with lovely views over plum orchards, vineyards, and farms.

It's the perfect base to enjoy the best of the French Aquitaine. Tour the world famous wines and chateaux of St. Emilion, Sauternes and Monbazillac. Plan day trips to the Atlantic coast beaches, the Dordogne, or Pyrenees. Nearby villages have daily open-air markets. International airports of Bordeaux and Bergerac are less than an hour's drive.

The property's meticulous restoration was completed in 2004. The home features 400 square meters of living space with 9 meter high beamed ceilings and breathtaking stone work.

Rooms include:

- Gourmet kitchen with granite and stainless steel

- Large dining room with solid oak farmhouse table

- Salon with 2 stone fireplaces and chandelier

- Great room with office space, private loft and wine cellar

- 3 spacious bedrooms and 2 private loft bedrooms

- 3 bathrooms with solid brass fittings, large showers and a bath

The gardens:

- New 8 meter in-ground pool with salt filtration system and security fencing

- 2 pergolas with outdoor seating and lovely views

- Old fashioned front porch overlooking courtyard

- Outdoor, vine-covered shower

- Plum orchards and other fruit trees

Additional Guest Services:

Rentals include weekly housekeeping. We can also provide daily housekeeping and maid services. Our caretaker - who lives away from the property - can arrange private wine tours, private catered meals, cooking classes, and other services.

About Kathleen Janick

I'm an American who studied abroad in France 25 years ago, commencing a lifelong love affair with the French countryside. I travel for business and spend most of my time between the US and Europe.

Kathleen Janick purchased this farmhouse in 1997

Why Kathleen Janick chose Aquitaine

I fell in love with La Grivette - at the time only an abandoned farm house - during a long weekend visiting friends who lived in the area. It was a real 'coup de coeur' from the minute I saw the front courtyard, overgrown with abandoned roses, until we opened the back window that perfectly frames the Roman church off in the village. That was it - I had to own it. Little did I imagine the 8 years it would take to renovate... but that makes for interesting stories and we had great vacations with family, friends and anyone else I could convince to come camp and work on the property.

What makes this farmhouse unique

La Grivette is unique because of its charm and its isolated location. So many of the old farms were built right along the road, or have neighboring houses right next to them. If you are looking for tranquility, beautiful views, lovely walks, and the best night's sleep you've ever had, then this is ideal place.

Our favourite place in France

  • 5 of 5

We have returned to La Grivette several times over the few years and can't recommend it highly enough. The building itself is beautifully renovated and the tranquility of the location is second to none. A truly wonderful place to stay.

The Best!

  • 5 of 5

La Grivette, was a fantastic French experience and an ideal place for a family holiday. The owners couldn't have done more to make our stay comfortable and accommodated our every need. We travelled as an extended family - grandparents through infant children, and the host family even supplied books and toys for the little ones!

The property is a beautifully restored farm house, with lots of space - there were 7 of us. There was no shortage of fresh linen or towels, the kitchen was well stocked and all the beds were comfortable! La Grivette is surrounded by fruit orchards and sits in a very tranquil location minutes from three small villages. The stone terraces that surround the house are filled with lavender and provide a perfect place for al fresco dining. The farm proved to be an ideal resting place between excursions to St. Emilion, Bordeaux, and many other French attractions.

Daily markets were within an easy drive or bike ride, and the night markets provided a fun (economical!) and interesting way to dine in the evening and explore a number of smaller villages within 10 - 20 minutes of La Grivette. There are a number of lovely restaurants in the area as well. We love to play tennis and took advantage of the local club almost every day. The towns people were friendly and helpful and the lattes, cheese, chocolates, baguettes and of course the wine from the local shops provided daily taste sensations.

La Grivette will make you fall in love with rural France and if we could, we go back in a heartbeat! It was an ideal spot to truly experience the "French way"!
