Why The Owner chose Elliston

This property is located in arguably the most beautiful town in Eastern Newfoundland. Elliston /Sandy Cove/ Maberly together make up the quintessential remote Newfoundland Outport. Natural hiking and endless dramatic seascapes exist throughout the town.

What makes this house unique

The cottage occupies a complete point of land and shares the property with the Anchor House, providing endless rocky areas to explore. The house is strategically located on the upper loop of the Bonavista Peninsula making it a great base for launching road trips to Trinity and Bonavista. With most outport homes being small, at 1000 sq feet Norder Cove Cottage is one of the more roomy guest houses / rental properties in the area.

Great spot to watch the bay and adventure from

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with our two kids and my parents. The house was very well taken care of and was big enough for all of us. Space wise we would have been better off if the weather had been good enough to use the terrace, as this is a big space in itself.

The house was well equipped, but has no supplies on the food front at all (which was a small surprise being used to airbnb where there's usually some tea and a bottle of olive oil etc).. We were surprised that we weren't allowed to drink the water (first we'd heard about when we got there) and that during the time of our visit the oven was not working.

We enjoyed the decor of the house, which has been done to reflect how it used to be years ago, and from this and the museums locally, got a very good feel for what life used to be in this part of the world. The location of the house was great - not only with it's amazing views of the bay, and it's resident icebergs at the time we were staying- but for all that you can access from this location. We visited Trinity on our way up to the house, took trips to Bonavista, Spillars cove, and Newmans Cove (for the infamous Bonavista Social club restaurant) and walked from the cottage to see the puffin colony. We also thoroughly enjoyed walking from the cottage around the bay, walking to Coles Gulch, and even more local bays to play in, throwing rocks into the water and floating driftwood down the streams. There's a good convenience store and a restaurant and museum in town too.

Ken provided the information we needed to access the house, but it was minimal communication compared to what I am used to. No mention of the water and the oven issue for example ahead of time, or any information on what to do from the area.

Owner's Response: Becky... happy you enjoyed the house. Boil water order lifted October 2017. New purification system is operational. Stove top and oven work. We only provide basics - salt-pepper-sugar and water if there is a boil water notice. We previously provided some food but found it was being wasted so we discontinued the practice. We answer all questions within 24 hours, the majority immediately. The VRBO/Homeaway Hospitality Information System works great. Since it's implementation there has been very few questions. I'm not familiar with how the Air B&B system works or what they provide.

perfect Newfoundland experience

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed here two years in a row, taking visiting family from the West to the Blue Anchor House. Love the location, the set up (everything you need is included). Absolutely love no TV and internet, just a quiet family time together in a beautiful setting, in a great home. We will certainly be back next year (for a third straight year).

Owner's Response: Hi Duncan- thanks for your review. We do in fact have Internet!... glad you didn't discover it as the experience at The Anchor emanates from being disconnected. We have experimented with no Internet at our other remote outport properties and receive the same feedback... unfortunately people demand it and as a result they miss a big part of the experience... Once has to try it before really understanding... brings back memories of the days when we actually had to talk to people. Hope to see you again soon...

This home was the perfect get away from the city. There were icebergs in view and the sun shines on the ocean view deck all day long. We cuddled up on the deck with a bottle of red and took in the fresh salt air, the view, and the quiet. I recommend to non NL folk to come during tourist season when restaurants and attractions are open for the summer season!

The house itself is a real taste of Newfoundland. The decor inside and out makes you feel you are a world away, and in a lot of ways you are!

Owner's Response: Thanks Chantel... May is a good time to come to experience nature and icebergs. All the restaurants are open in Bonavista- it's mostly the manufactured government-run tourist sites that are closed. As a working town with a population of 4000, Bonavista's culture is still vibrant, the Garrick Theatre runs year round, and of course the famed Walkham's Gate Pub is open with great live east coast music...

Beautiful solitude and close to everything in the area

  • 5 of 5

The Anchor House in Elliston is a beautiful spot - quiet, cosy and colourful. The house was spacious for a family of five and the view from the deck was spectacular. Proximity to Bonavista and Trinity made it ideal. Lots of great hikes, places to eat, and scenic beauty. The root cellars and puffin colony in Elliston are must dos.

Loved that fact that was no tv in the house - thank you.

Owner's Response: Thanks Victoria! Greatly appreciate your review. We've debated the provision of a TV. The overwhelming response has been that it's absence has a positive effect on the overall Newfoundland experience. It's interesting to see that it takes a few days without TV to understand how great it is not to have one while on vacation... Ken Hope to see you again sometime soon! Ken

Highlight of our trip

  • 5 of 5

Loved peaceful mornings and evenings on the deck watching birds and whales, and the iceberg that settled near the cove. Bring your binoculars. What a beautiful cottage with spectacular views. Spacious, clean, quiet, tasteful. Felt like home. Nearby beach and puffin site made Ellison a fun place to explore. Nice to take a drive to Bonavista, too. Highly recommend Norder Cove Cottage. We have been home for over a week but our minds are still there soaking up the beauty.
