About the property

Unique 3 bedroom, 2 bath comfortable cabin surrounded by 3 mtn. ranges

Shakespeare had his 'play within a play' technique and we have our 'cabin within a cabin' architecture! Former owners built a house around and above an old hunting cabin affording us an intriguing and unique interior. The warmth of the log walls, the stone fireplaces, and inspired decor create a warm and welcome atmosphere that our guests have loved! Recycled wood has been used to trim doors and windows, be the planks for our floors and serve as our handmade custom doors. This attention to detail give Bowmore a style that will take your breath away. 'Wow!' 'This is amazing' are common phrases heard when guests enter our doors. During your stay, cook up a delicious meal in our fully stocked log kitchen while the wood stove crackles away in the open kitchen/ family room area. The custom built kitchen cabinets and tile floor will make you want to cook! (Or, bring your take out food and load up the extra frig located in the laundry room for your overflow items.) You may even feel inspired to grill on our deluxe propane bbq sitting just outside the back door on the spacious deck looking out to a forest of fir trees and pond. Enjoy your meal in the formal dining room with two sets of french doors and 3 beautiful windows looking out on Montana's heartland. The harvest style table with leaves can accommodate larger numbers. If the weather is right, take your meal on the back deck furniture under the cover of the retractable awning. Or, for a cozier meal, sit at the table in the breakfast room, looking to the forest and pond. With the flip of a switch a gas fireplace warms the comfortable living room. In the mood for a movie? Want to catch that special game? Enjoy our media room supplied with satellite TV reception and surround sound. Surround sound makes the experience realistic and vibrant. Feel free to borrow videos and DVDs from our media room library. The media room can also double as another bedroom for the couch converts to a queen size hide-a-bed. The double doors and heavy curtains and window shades provide more than adequate privacy. Before you depart from the media room, take a look in the antique amoire at all the games and puzzles placed for your enjoyment. A lovely bathroom with a shower graces the main floor. Head up the massive custom built staircase to 3 bedrooms and one bathroom. Before you do, don't miss the little apartment under the stairs made especially for the little people, complete with a cozy bed, table and lamp, a few toys and books! Upstairs there is one bedroom with a king bed, another with a queen, and the third bedroom housing a queen and a double bed. The decor and comfort of the premium bedding will delight you! Enjoy the large closets, dressers, alarm clocks, extra blankets and pillows, fans, luggage racks, and classy bed coverings. We get rave reviews about the comfort of our mattresses! Take a hot bath in the upstairs claw foot tub and soak in the amazing views of the Crazy Mountains through the picture window. All bedrooms and bathroom have double hung windows and wooden slat shades that darken rooms and give privacy. Bowmore cabin has three amazing porches. Each porch is fitted with outdoor furniture, be it rockers, tables and chairs, or recliners. Each porch affords a different view and mood. The front porch is covered, facing the Crazies, the back deck is considered the sun deck(with a great wind-sensor automatic awning that helps you dictate the amount of sun), and the side porch is especially good for either watching the glorious sunsets or tucking away from the occasional Montana wind that might blow through. We have a laundry room with washer, dryer and complimentary soap and fabric softener. Some guests prefer to use the breakfast room as an office, taking advantage of our wireless internet and the views of the pond and forest all at the same time. 'Comfortable' is an understatement when describing the Bowmore experience. We welcome you to your home away from home!

About Rob Kaufmann

Rob and Lyndsey have been happily married since 1975. Lyndsey met her Montana man while attending college in Seattle, Washington and both have been delighted to report they married the love of their life! Blessed is an understatement. Two amazing children, a daughter and a son, were born in 1976 and 1979. Now, two granddaughters have added to their joy. Rob has been in many different phases of construction during his job history. He recently sold his very successful garage door business, Kaufmann's Overhead Door. His hard work, character and integrity, along with awesome employees was a brilliant formula for growth. Rob has a gift for wood working and a great artistic eye. The Bowmore cabin has been an on-going project for the last several years and it has given Rob many hours of pleasure to sit with a glass of Bowmore Scotch and survey his accomplishments! It has been very beneficial to have a son that is a construction engineer that also appreciates a good glass of Scotch. Both their son, and Rob's brother, a former electrician, have given them the gift of their talents and their time. Lyndsey has a Master's degree in education, and recently retired from 13 years of teaching elementary school in Bozeman. She misses the magical moments that happened in her fourth and fifth grade classrooms and the relationships built with her students. Lyndsey adores weekly time with her granddaughters, and thinks family is the most amazing gift from God. She thinks that homemaking should be viewed as an art form and therefore has thoroughly enjoyed hunting down the treasures from local antique stores that you see hanging on the Bowmore walls. She loves color and design and is thrilled to decorate any space possible. They are the quintessential 'do-it-yourselfers' and seem to have made a great team in many ways. Rob and Lyndsey sincerely hope you will enjoy their loving labors and they extend to you a warm and hearty Montana welcome.

Why Rob Kaufmann chose Wilsall

Being a Montana man, Rob has always loved the Bozeman area and the Gallatin Valley. It has been home for decades. But, there was something in him that longed for the simplicity and peace of years past, a desire to turn the clock back, to revisit the real Montana. When Rob first viewed this property he realized it showed great potential; the logs walls from the original hunting cabin were definitely intriguing. But he was also impacted by the location. He saw it as the 'heartland' of Montana, set in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges that took your breath away. The air was clean. The stars were unfettered by city lights. The call of the crickets and coyotes carried clearly through the cool, night Rocky Mountain air. It was what he missed from when he was a kid camping out. The surrounding farm area with cattle dotting the fields and hay bales standing as a testimony of good, honest work made it feel like home, like roots. Without being overly dramatic, and being truly honest, there is an unspoken feeling, nearly indescribable, about farmland that captures the heartbeat of our nation. Without this, where would we be? And, Rob wanted a piece of this. He came home and surprised Lyndsey with his announcement, 'I bought a cabin today!' When Lyndsey made that first drive to the cabin and took in the spectacular views of the Crazy Mountains, she understood what had captured the heart of her man. Yep, this is real Montana. What the heck! You have to drive a little way, all the while witnessing some of the state's greatest views, but that's what we came for. Hope you can join us in our place of peace, brilliant stars, and the songs of the night that you just won't experience in the city limits. Breathe deep. It's the scent of life, of history, of real Montana.

What makes this cabin unique

Why did we choose this house? It called to us to unlock the potential it held within. We have described the location that so captivated our hearts, but the interior hung like a dangling participle, like an unfinished sentence. It clearly needed someone to rewrite its story. The Bowmore was originally birthed as a simple little log cabin, used for hunting weekends, for getting together with friends, for camping out, so to speak. In years that followed, it 'morphed' into a house built around the cabin, still longing for more attention. But, the bones were good. The location serene. We knew with the right touch those log walls would sing, the kitchen would nest family and conversations, and great meals. We envisioned the dead-end bedroom transformed into a cheery dining room where friends and family could linger over a cup of coffee. But we must say, besides the log walls, the covered porch called our names. With each season, we have sat on that porch and either watched a gentle snow fall or beheld the power of a mighty thunderstorm with torrents of rain diving off of the metal roof. We have had candle-lit dinners for two or for a pack of family. We have sipped wine, and tea, and scotch as we watch the bright day turn golden with long shadows and the mountains glowing pink. We knew it would be like this. Come look at our photograph album and see evidence of its transformation. Better yet, come live for a few days in the warmth of the log walls, feel the joy of a house redeemed by love. And, don't forget to sit under that covered porch, what ever time of year it may be, and enjoy what nature has planned for you each day. Cheers!

The BEST family vacation EVER for this family from South Carolina!!!

  • 5 of 5

It was a long way to go but worth the long distance! We spent one fabulous week in the Bowmore Cabin. The photos we previewed prior to booking our vacation were exactly what we saw when we opened the doors to this beautiful home. I have never had a more relaxed vacation in my life....just what we wanted! Everything that you could possibly need or want was available to us. Rob answered all my questions prior to our arrival. We were just blown away by this place. Our mornings started and ended on the back porch watching deer, hawks, bunnies and ducks on the pond. The view from the front porch was gorgeous and just at sunset you might even get a double rainbow or another beautiful panoramic view especially towards the crazie mountains.

Our children who are in their thirties loved this place. In fact, they have already asked us to return again next year! And you bet we will. Read the details in the description of this cabin, every single one is exactly what it says. We can't wait to return! I would recommend this property to any and all age groups. Yellowstone is near by for touring, Livingston is a wonderful town not too far away and right in your backyard is a small but charming town called Wilsail.

There is not one single thing that we would change or do differently on this trip. Everything we wanted or needed was there for us!

Wonderfully Quiet and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at our "cabin" for a long weekend and upon exploring the delightful home we wished we had time to extend our stay. It is obvious the cabin had been renovated with an incredible amount of love and compassion. You will truly feel like the property is your home, with everything you need to make the stay enjoyable. The scenery is fabulous, it is a little ways off the beaten path making it very private. The nearest town of Wilsall has a few wonderful restaurants and a grocery store. The quaint town of Livingston is only 30 minutes away and Bozeman less than an hour. It is perfect for a short or long getaway and we would definitely return! Thank you Lyndsey and Rob!

Special home with loads of character

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed a wonderful stay at Bowmore. Relaxing on the hammock, fishing in the pond, enjoying s'mores by the fire pit, rocking on the porch, playing in the kids' "clubhouse" underneath the stairs, preparing meals in the well-stocked kitchen, observing wildlife.... just a few of the incredible memories our family will forever cherish. Thank you, Rob and Lindsey!

Off the grid

  • 5 of 5

This was such a refreshing and relaxing vacation. The peace and quiet was just what we needed. The cabin was perfect. It was spacious and beautifully decorated. Rob and Lyndsey thought of everything and I mean everything. After staying here all other VRBO’s will be hard pressed to meet future comparisons and expectations. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Amazing Place, terrific owners.

  • 5 of 5

Spent 4 days here with some friends over 4th of July week. The house is immaculately maintained and equipped. The views from the 3 decks are awesome. And plenty of bird watching and wildlife viewing. Take time to go up into 'The Crazies'. Up by Ibex Cabin and Cottonwood creek. It's worth the trip. Just driving around the area we saw bald eagles, pronghorns, hawks, pheasant, muledeer and much more. I would recommend this place highly as someone who has been renting houses for some 20 years. This was at the top of the list. One last thing. If staying in summer, follow the tips by the owners for keeping cool. Works like a charm!

Gorgeous details/decor

  • 5 of 5

Rob (owner) sent email with the lock code and detailed directions several days in advance. He also let us know as soon as the cabin was ready incase we needed an early checkin. The cabin was easy to find, about 18 minute drive through gorgeous country from tiny town of Wilsall. This cabin is as gorgeous as everyone has written. I too marveled in the details. The owners have thought of everything from extra towels, hooks everywhere for towels, extra quilts, fleece blankets and pillows , to magazines in the bathrooms and roasting forks hanging from below the picnic table by the firepit. There are little signs and a binder of info about the cabin that answers all your questions. There is one shower downstairs (plenty of hot water and great water pressure) and the one tub upstairs, we didnt use the tub but it has great views! The view you see in the photo from the porch is off to the right, a short walk down a country road takes you to spectacular views. We took time to sit on each porch and view the beautiful surroundings from each angle. We roasted marshmellows each night over the open fire pit. The media room was perfect for my 15 year old son. He emerged for meals now and again.

The birds love this place. Lots of robins nests on the front porch. We soon came to an agreement with one bird that we would sit on the far end away from the nest if she didnt try to flap in our faces. 😉? We saw deer with babies and antelope nearby.

We ate dinner in Wilsall at the Vault restaurant. We loved this place. So friendly, and great local beef on the menu.

We drove the Beartooth highway and the top of the Yellowstone loop to Mammoth Falls. Long day but highly recommended. One day we took a float trip down the Yellowstone river out of Rubber Ducky rentals in Livingston. One day we drove to Bozeman for the day for shopping and eating. Each afternoon we were so happy to get back to this relaxing and wonderful cabin.

The Bowmore Cabin is nestled in at the base of the magnificent Crazy Mountains, situated on 10 acres in the heartland of Montana. From our valley, you can also view the glorious Bridger and Absorka Mountain Ranges. The rural surroundings makes for a quiet and peaceful location, sitting amongst farming property held by families for generations, just 8 miles outside of the tiny historic town of Wilsall, and 35 miles from the movie star haven of Livingston, Montana. We are also only a 50 minute scenic drive from charming Bozeman, Montana recently voted in the top ten cities in the US for the best downtown main street. The Bowmore is the perfect place to getaway and catch your breath, yet within distance of finding fun and good restaurants. Take a walk in paradise, hike in the woods, watch wildlife collecting at the pond, read a book, watch a movie, head to the ski hill. Don't forget to stretch out in our outdoor recliners to view the amazing star filled night sky. There are many advantages to not being too close to town. One of our guests said they had planned to 'go, go, go' but once they arrived in our cozy, well-stocked get-away, they happily decided to just snuggle in.
