About Bob

Your Host 'Bob' has worked a decade overseas assisting people in nations ravaged by wars to rebuild their lives and nation. During the time overseas 'Bob' was called the 'movie man' not because he knew much about movies but because Bob would share a movie with everyone: Sharing a move led to sharing popcorn and sometimes teaching people of other nations how to make popcorn in a theater popcorn machine: Bob left many popcorn machines around the world and many friendly popcorn lovers. During those 10 years, Bob had little time to visit the wonderful home and retreat he wants to share with you. For Bob, relaxation was no longer than 21 days home at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - 'Music Cave of Refuge' and making Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua a special place of refuge to relax, reflect and share. Darlene our co-host would put back in order the projects Bob did not finish. Darlene lived during my long time overseas at my home in the downstairs living area: I am happy to say Darlene still lives in the downstairs unit of the home and can be your best guide to the islands or she can be invisible: Your Choice. Darlene managed a Hostel for more than 3 years that specialized in eco-tourism and hiking (a favorite stop for world travelers). Darlene has been an island resident for 26 years. Now that Darlene is retired it is wonderful to have her around as a friend and resource. I encourage you to consider the advantages of a home with such a great friend and resource: We hope you can relax as we do at Pila Ho'okani Pu'uhonua - with our Hawaii and World knowledge - We truly believe there is no finer place in Hawaii or the World.

Aloha and Mahalo from Darlene and Bob!

Bob purchased this house in 2004

Why Bob chose Pahoa

The area and home have some of the cleanest air in the World. Home location is approximately 1 mile from a weather point used as a baseline reference for World clean air data. There is sunshine almost every day usually when it rains during the day (not very common) the sun will always return. It is very common for late night and early morning showers allowing for a lush green environment during the very sunny days and it makes for very moderate temperatures never (almost never) temperatures exceeding the 80's. With the mild but steady winds, humidity is generally not an issue. The home offers Seclusion, Seclusion, Seclusion with beautiful surrounding areas. Just outside your doorstep are wonderful walking areas and scenic roads: When you return home the home environment and outstanding entertainment option offer almost a vacation in a vacation.

What makes this house unique

View the steam rising from the lava ocean entry and from the front lot view the lava flowing down the mountainside when surface lava is present. SECLUSION! CHANGING VISTA VIEWS! MORNING AND EVENING WALKS! Almost no one knows anyone lives here! Two isolated uncrowded beaches one a 5 minute walk and the other a 15 minute walk. Must be one of the best kept secrets and places on the globe.

2 Weeks Lost in the 60s!

  • 5 of 5

Loved, loved. loved the Refuge! It took days to explore just the house and it's character. I was wondering about the clocks.... then I recalled my visits to the Dali Museum near where I used to live... and the mystery solved itself! Did I say I loved this place? Caretaker was a gem. Full of local information and so much more. Never had to use the a/c because of the sea breezes and quick gentle rains. Frogs sang us to sleep accompanied by the ocean waves crashing on the lava flow. Kitchen couldn't want for a thing. If it wasn't there, you didn't need it. Evenings were spent watching my husband and his BFF sitting on chairs in front of the jukebox trying to see who's genre would trump that evening: hubby's rock or BFF's country and 50s! At least Elvis didn't cause a riff! Wouldn't change a thing, and can't wait to return. Oh, and the volcano pending eruption was just icing on the cake! Thanks, Bob.

Super clean with tonnes of things to do.

  • 5 of 5

This was an amazing property and Darlene was the most wonderful host you could ever have. When we got lost she was so supportive and helped us find our way and let us check in early since we had so many perishables. The boys love the big screen TV and all the popcorn they could eat. When we finally got our bearing straight it was easy to find everything. Just an all-around great rental property

Owner's Response: Wonderful guests: Though it was a short visit; with some suggestions from Darlene our guests were able to enjoy snorkeling, turtle watching and volcano hiking. Then when they were home, they had wonderful family time watching many movies on the big screen with endless bowls of theater popcorn. Even more amazing, on their trip to the Kona Airport they chose the southern route: Punalu'u, Southpoint, Green Sands Beach, Captain Cook and The Place of Refuge. What a great conclusion to a unique Hawaiian vacation. Special thanks to our guest for their communication on a video issue we were able to get it corrected so they could enjoy some great movie time. Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

I can't remember having a vacation rental where the owner and host(ess) were more diligent at insuring their guests had the best stay possible. Owner Bob & hostess Darlene are simply top notch. The house was well stocked with supplies and there was plenty of kitchen and dinner ware. Beach towels & chairs, snorkel gear, coolers, bicycles, binoculars, headlamps, etc. were in excellent shape and ready to use. And Darlene was a wealth of information regarding interesting sights and things to do ... always so helpful.

I also can't say enough about the eclectic decor and furnishings. Almost every day I'd come across something in the house that would make me smile. Where else are you going to stay that has a Rockola jukebox!

Owner's Response: Thanks for appreciating our responsiveness to your questions. Thank you for the follow-up message telling us how your wife found the bed so comfortable and also identifying a possible issue on one of the video systems. We do encourage such exchanges, questions and information so we can help. You mentioning all the wonderful/thoughtful items we have available lets me share the items are available because guest made recommendations and/or requests. Thank you for letting us know the memorabilia tickled your funny bone daily: Your noticing the little things just caused a smile. Yes the "Rockola Jukebox" - "The idea started with the "Rockola Jukebox"; thus "The Music Cave of Refuge" and what would a Music Cave be without instruments. Hope you get to stop by at a future time where you can practice some music! Mahalo Bob and Darlene

Funky and fun

  • 5 of 5

This was a fun place to stay! It has a very personalized touch and Darleen was a great host. We enjoyed all the things provided, bikes, boogie boards, snorkels, etc. The location is also great. There's not much to do in Pahoa, but we had a lot of fun walking around the lava fields and in Volcano National Park.

This is a very high tech house as well! There are projectors in every room, a large juke box and tons of light up clocks. Our only complaints were the loud ticking of clocks in the bedroom and no bright overhead lighting.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words and appreciation for the hard work of Darlene plus mentioning the many extras we provide for our guest entertainment. It is our goal to have the extras that allow our guest to experience many of the specials features of this area. Pahoa is an interesting town very early Hawaii; since our guest were on a short visit they probably missed learning about some of the great places to eat in Pahao and some of the flea markets both in and close to Pahoa; plus the nearby famous Uncle Robert's night market/community event - less than 1 mile from the home. Thanks for mentioning the ticking of the clocks, I have poor ears so I do not notice but I will be sure to ask Darlene if we can muffle the ticking. On the overhead lighting we have the largest wattage bulbs in out decorative fans lights. When I am home in September I will explore other options: Maybe there are now brighter LED lights for the fixtures. Thank You and Mahalo from Darlene and Bob.

Calming Spot

  • 5 of 5

I chose this place from the reviews and pictures, and it lived up to them all. Bob and Darlene were more than obliging in outfitting the bathroom so that I could come. Darlene was a welcoming and informative hostess who couldn't do enough for us. All the decor and equipment keep me discovering new things every day. Two of us rode bikes every day going to the lava viewing, the long ponds, Pahoa and more. We make ice cream three times, trying different flavors using the local fruit. The snorkeling equipment was great and the cooler was extra handy. I enjoyed waking up to see the lava fields and the ocean each morning through the French doors in my bedroom. One of my favorite things was sitting on the lanai trying to identify birds in the afternoon which was make easier by all the birding info available at the house. Books on plants, history and people of Hawaii were in abundance as well as novels for escape. I haven't mentioned the huge movie screens, the jukebox, and the popcorn maker.

We would have liked to stay forever. Alas! But we do have the memories forever. Thank you Bob and Darlene for sharing this bit of heaven with us.

Owner's Response: We thank you so much! Your kind patience and input helped us make this meeting possible. Like you, I will take a break usually during chores step out on the lanai and watch birds. It is always a pleasure to hear that you enjoyed exploring the books, fun nostalgia and used many of the accessories we include. It is wonderful to have the lava at your footsteps, bikes to explore and the extra of snorkel gear when you get to that special spot. Thank you for using the ice cream maker; wish I could have tasted you island fruits ice cream. Finally I enjoyed you could share movies with your family on the projection screens and we will share this special feeling and visit forever. Mahalo Bob and Darlene
