About John Ventura
John & Kate here! We’re two professionals living in Philadelphia who love good food, traveling, and the Eastern Shore! We love going out and exploring new restaurants in every city we visit. We also enjoy sailing, cooking, and gardening. We try to explore new places and learn their culture and history while we do so.
John Ventura purchased this House in 2017
Why John Ventura chose Chestertown
Nature at its best! When we first purchased the property, we couldn’t believe the amount of bald eagles we saw. Perfect cozy house with great views. Land across from our dock is conserved, so you can’t beat the scenery. Oh, and all of the windows as well!
What makes this House unique
Views from the living room. Waking up to great views from the bedroom as well. Quiet waterfront with great kayaking.

Nice Getaway at a beautiful, tranquil home surrounded by nature
We had a great time at this cozy, super clean home. This is a lovely home - it's very comfortable and nicely decorated. The owners have it set up perfectly with all the things you would need including nearly every kitchen tool we could have wished for. Everything was top notch. The bed was comfortable and the WiFi great. The home has expansive windows looking out into the nature and with an awesome river view. The bird watching is totally entertaining and we enjoyed kayaking - thanks to the owners for allowing the use. I definitely recommend this home and hope to be back.
“So much scerenity”
Had a wonderful time in a superb location. This is a really cleverly designed house with lots outdoor living space and a beautiful view from every room. We took advantage of the kayaks and did lots of bird watching. Very well equipped. Would highly recommend.
Relaxing waterfront retreat
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this waterfront house near Chestertown. The owners, John & Kate, were super hosts, responded quickly to all our questions, and the house was very well stocked with anything we might need. We loved taking the kayaks out on the creek, saw many osprey and eagles overhead. We also explored the nearby towns of Rock Hall and the beach at Betterton and had dinner at several great seafood restaurants overlooking the bay. Would highly recommend staying here if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful getaway on the upper Eastern shore.
Lovely contemporary designed to maximize waterfront views
My tween and teen boys and I loved staying in this home. We rent homes both in the US and other countries, and really appreciated the clean lines, amazing windows and generosity of spirit of the owners. From the use of the kayaks to the best stocked kitchen I’ve ever had in a rental (good knives, etc.) this was a great retreat. Beds were comfy - but we spent most of our time on the living level, screen porch and dock. A special place we hope to return to again - highly recommend.
Lovely Zen-like home in serene setting perched on wooded hillside above the water
This home is very relaxing and functional, full of natural light and beautiful views. The interior is simply and very comfortably furnished, no clutter, very clean, everything organized and in its place. The kitchen is thoughtfully appointed with just about everything a well-versed cook might need; the pantry well stocked with staples and pleasant surprises. The owners generously invite you to help yourself. Bedrooms restful with water and forest views. Bathrooms clean, plenty of hot water, forest views.
The setting is ideal for nature enthusiasts. You can see it all from inside the house, outside on the deck, within the screened porch, down on the dock, or from one of three kayaks. We explored by kayak every day, spotting numerous bald eagles, ospreys, blue heron, egrets, terns, and cormorants on the hunt. There's a large privately owned mature oak and beech forest on the opposite shore where eagles perched between hunts. We watched flocks of redwing blackbirds fly into the tall rushes across the water from the house at dusk and take off again at dawn, occasionally paddling over in kayaks to see and hear the action up close. We were able to paddle to the head of Whorton Creek at the Chesapeake Bay (Osprey nests!) as well as upstream into shallower waters where we saw colorful stands of marsh hibiscus and pickerelweed. The owners have a natural "bay scape" property shaded with oak and sweet gum trees and planted with native perennials. Cardinal flowers in bloom lined the pathway to the dock.
We did some nice hikes at East Neck NWR just south of Rock Hall on an overcast and rainy Monday afternoon. We had the whole refuge pretty much to ourselves. Lovely bay views and plenty of wildlife. Went out to Lockbriar Farms for fresh peaches and blueberries in season and homemade ice cream. Best flavor is honey vanilla. Spent an afternoon at a sweet little public beach in Betterton swimming in the bay, enjoying the sun and breeze, and watching eagles fish. Went to Barbara's on the Bay for dinner on a Thursday evening (homeowners' recommendation, Betterton!). The place has a warm casual local vibe. Turns out Barbara is a top-notch former NYC chef. Best crab cakes EVER. Tender Ahi tuna steak full of flavor, duck breast married with blueberries and fluffy creamy polenta, warm peach and blueberry cobbler, fresh in season, YUM.
This was our first time to this area of Maryland. We stayed Sunday through Friday. Wonderfully uncrowded. Perfect.
Perfect modern get-away on the water for 2-4 people
Well designed and well kept home. Lovely interior design. Both bedrooms have great views of the river, as well as the living room and kitchen. Sat on the dock in the morning with coffee. Used the kayaks everyday. Easy communication with the owners and easy entry/exit. Basic things like flashlight, saran wrap, etc. are provided and easy to find. No issues whatsoever. Would stay again.
