About Kitty Jones

We purchased Big Flat Ranch in 1986 and have been raising cattle and sheep here for over twenty years. We are experienced equestrians and can share information on where to go and what to do while you visit us. We fell in love with this valley years ago and hope that you will too.

My wife, our 9 month old and two dogs spent thanksgiving here and made a family memory that'll live on forever. It rained the entire trip but we were content sitting by the wood burning furnace and living our life without the need of cell phones and cable TV. I mean, we obviously watched football on Thanksgiving, but that was about it. Aside from the awesome cabin, the area around it is gorgeous. Not to mention that the nearby Redwoods Park is also the moon of Endor. But you don't have to be a Star Wars geek to appreciate this romote and stunning location. Even if you're not planning a trip like this, you should. It was so great to get away from the city and cannot think of a better place to spend a few nights.

Bill and Kitty were amazing hosts. Kitty made cookies that we immediately devoured and Bill checked in on us every day just to make sure we had enough power and to tell us a bit about the place.

What a great getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in mid August and really enjoyed our stay. It was a peaceful location and the home

was warm and cozy. They had a fan in one of the closets that helped us stay cool. The rooms

were perfect and I know my kids were grateful for some TV. We watched the Olympics on our down time.

We liked that they had a binder with information on some great locations to visit which we took advantage.

We really loved the watering hole near by. We were the only ones there so that made it even better. We went

and saw the Redwoods at the different parks and locations.

There was construction on the road leading to the cabin that did cause some long waits which my

husband wasn't a fan. However we thought it was worth it. I would definitely recommend staying here

to anyone. Bonus- Kitty wrote us a nice welcome card and provided cookies. Very hospitable. We also

saw a mother deer and her two fawns right outside our door. Just wonderful!

Delightful! Very clean and comfortable. Had everything we needed.

  • 4 of 5

Kitty was wonderful with all contact. Realized we were going to arrive a day later than originally planned and booked. Without asking, Kitty was kind enough to refund our missed nights stay. Cabin was nestled in a very quiet and remote area. If you want to truly step away from the everyday, this would be the location to book.

great place to disconnect

Our stay at the off-grid solar cabin was everything we expected. All the comforts necessary for a great stay. The cabin was well appointed. Screen rooms lovely spots to sit and enjoy the beauty around you. The river beaches offer a great respite from mid day heat. Highly recommend. Had no interaction with owners, but knew they were quite near if we needed anything.

The Paradise trail head is a short drive from the ranch, and the old Kelsey Trail head is just minutes away. Part of the Kelsey Trail is wheelchair accessible from the Big Flat Campground. A short drive downriver gets you to Jedediah Smith State Park where you will find 10,000 acres of primeval redwood groves and a diverse array of plants and wildlife.

The beaches and swimming holes near the cabin are great places to rest or play in the soothing waters of the Smith River.

A great coastal destination is Tolowa Dunes State Park which is the 'center of the universe' and ancestral land of the Tolowa Dee-ni'. They include the western lily, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, brown pelican, western snowy plover, Aleutian cackling goose, marbled murrelet, green sturgeon, tidewater goby, steel head and coastal cut throat trout, and Oregon silver spot and seaside hoary elfin butterflies. The rare silvery phacelia is found nowhere else in California. This place is truly magical!

Horse back riding in the recreation areas is absolutely spectacular. We don't offer boarding facilities at the cabin at this time but it is in the works for the near future. . There are several boarding facilities nearby if you bring your equine companions. There are also guided trail rides available in several locations. Here is an opportunity to cross horseback riding on the beach off your bucket list! Ask Kitty for details.
