Just a short walk from the bustle of SOCO’s (South Congress's) cool bars, unique restaurants, and one-of-a-kind shops, a vintage 1920s cottage-- your retreat in Central Austin-- awaits you.
Welcome to Purple Sage House, your home away from home in the heart of Central South Austin. Quiet yet minutes from everything that makes Austin unique, Purple Sage House is a perfect place to experience the city or just relax.
Located on a tree-lined street in one of Austin's most coveted neighborhoods, Purple Sage House feels world’s away from the buzz, but it’s only a short walk from SOCO (South Congress Avenue)’s quirky cool, Zilker Park, SoLa (South Lamar), Lady Bird Lake, Auditorium Shores, the Austin Convention Center, Downtown music venues, Barton Springs Pool, and all that makes Austin a traveler’s delight.
Nearby you’ll find amazing clubs that testify to why Austin has been called the “Live Music Capital of the World.” You'll also encounter eclectic dining from 4-star restaurants to unique food trailers serving up eats so delicious even the New York Times and Cooking Channel's 'Eat Street' have taken note. If you feel like cooking, Whole Foods International Headquarters and local supermarkets and specialty food stores are just minutes away.
Originally built in the 1920s in the Tudor style, Purple Sage House was remodeled by the owners with an architect’s guidance and precise attention to detail. You’ll find original oak floors and subway tile back-splashes in the kitchen and baths, oil rubbed bronze and nickel light fixtures, and an amazing kitchen with six-burner Thermidor Chef's range ready for your own culinary creations.
The house boasts a light and airy color scheme, and a subtle attention to vintage detail. There is a King sized bed in the 'Master' bedroom, a Queen in another sunny bedroom, and a twin trundle bed unit in the third, 'flex' bedroom / sitting room.
Each bedroom boasts high-quality linens for your comfort, and the home is furnished with high-quality pieces throughout; a comfortable L-shaped sectional from Restoration Hardware, leather armchair for reading, Stickley and other Mission-style furniture.
Both bathrooms (2 full) have been remodeled for modern convenience but with an attention to vintage style. White subway tile and classic fixtures including pedestal sinks throughout. Both bathrooms have shower / tub combinations and linen storage. Towels are included, including beach / swimming towels for swimmers.
Purple Sage House has a large pet-friendly fenced backyard, Texas native landscaping in the front (including the Purple Autumn Sage for which it takes its name), and a spacious 'Texas' patio in the rear yard furnished with deck furnishings and grill. What a perfect spot for enjoying a glass of wine or meal alfresco under the stars!
Or you may find yourself sitting in the bright blue porch swing hanging from the Live Oak tree in the front yard watching neighbors in this friendly neighborhood walk their dogs or bike to work. It's the owners' favorite place to watch the world go by!
Feel like staying active on your vacation or trip to Austin? Whatever your sport, Austin is likely to be a great place to be active. Are you a swimmer? Within walking distance is a spring-fed Austin city pool, Big Stacy Pool. Famous Barton Springs and Deep Eddy Pool are but a short drive away.
Runner or walker? Lady Bird / Town Lake trail is nearby for a jog or walk with loop distances from 3 miles to 10+ miles, and is home to Austin's famous Congress Avenue bat colony. Cyclists will find Austin home to a large and friendly community of cyclists and many miles of designated bike lanes.
Whether you’re booking for a weeklong work project, visiting family at University of Texas or St. Edwards' University, or looking for a more low-key weekend of relaxation, Purple Sage House is your centrally located second home in Austin.
As the saying goes, 'I wasn't born in Austin, but I got here as soon as I can!' I grew up in Arizona and went to university in California but after living in Austin almost nine years, I cannot imagine calling any other place home. My fiancee is a born-and-bred Texas from the Austin area and we both call South Austin / 78704 home.
Sarah Schoenfelder purchased this cottage in 2004
Ever since I first visited Austin in 1999, I was hooked. It took me a couple years to move here permanently, but I've never looked back. Austin is and will always be my hometown.
I first stayed at a vacation rental when I came to visit! Since that time I have enjoyed numerous VRBO experiences in various parts of the country, from West Texas and Kauai to Rome and Nantucket.
I spent a lot of time working on Purple Sage House after I bought it and remodeled it. It has been a soothing retreat for me over the years, and I hope you find it to be your home away from home while you visit Austin. I look forward to meeting you and hopefully you'll fall in love with Austin just like I did!
Purple Sage House has a perfect location to enjoy Austin's unique culture, live music, and culture. It's close to everything-- from downtown's buzz to the universities and major employers-- yet it feels like it's a world away, because it's located in a very tranquil vintage neighborhood. It's a great spot to escape and relax after a busy day of exploring Austin.
My wife, son (19), and daughter (13) and I just spent a week at this lovely house. We were in Austin for our daughter to compete in a Taekwondo tournament and decided to make a vacation of it. Excellent decision.
The house has character, color, comfort, a great kitchen, and front-of-house seating (porch chairs and swing). It is exactly as described. Just a two minute drive off the highway and a ten minute walk from a vibrant street, South Congress (i.e coffee, ice cream and margaritas), the house sits in an unbelievably quiet neighborhood filled with plush plants and trees and nice houses. We enjoyed spending time at the house between our many activities.
Highlights for us included the LBJ library, a tour of the Capital, the ten mile bike loop around the river, swimming in the Barton Springs "pool", a quick road-trip to San Antonio and for barbecue in Lockhart, innovative sushi at Uchiko, plenty of Tex-Mex and, more, barbecue.
Everything seemed close. We were back-and-forth to the Convention Center (5 minutes), Whole Foods (ten minutes), the bike rental place on Barton Springs et al and it all felt easy. And, it was thoroughly pleasant. Beyond the great food, musical presence, and the river, the people we met along the way were notably friendly.
While we had no problems, Sarah was very responsive to our emails and, as we mentioned, accurately described the house and it all it has to offer. We had a great time and highly recommend staying here.
This house has the most ideal location in Austin (trust me, I know the city well). It is near enough that you can walk to Congress Avenue (10 minutes) or First Street (20 minutes) to some of the best restaurants in the U.S. (all very informal, because it’s Austin). Yet it’s far enough from Congress that you don’t have any tourists or noise. Travis Heights Boulevard is a wide, leafy street. Sitting with a book, your tablet, or your laptop on the long divan couch, with its corner view of local residents walking by with their dogs and baby carriages, is a fine spot to hang out. You feel very connected here. There are great walks in several directions, including the new boardwalk that goes for miles along Lady Bird Lake, which you can access a few blocks from the house.
My daughters came for several days, and they were very comfortable sharing the beautiful front bedroom and loved having their own bathroom (there is a full second bathroom). The master bedroom is heaven to sleep in. The large back room has another bed and is good for whatever else you want to use it for. The large TV in the living room is great; my daughters and I watched a different movie every night.
This house not only has character, it is amazingly functional. It is a great place for a longer-term stay of a few weeks (I stayed a month). The kitchen is a large gourmet kitchen with everything you can possibly need. The huge dining table can accommodate eight or more people. I used the dining table to spread my work out-- it was the most pleasant work site I’ve ever had (also with a great view of the street, by the way). The house has a fast internet / wireless, ATT U-verse TV, a land line (important because cell reception in Travis Heights is shaky), and even a color printer. I was fully functional working here for a month and had to bring nothing but my laptop.
But the best thing about the house is the classy landlord Sarah and her team. They are very responsive and accommodating and will attend to whatever your needs are right away. They took care of all my problems, large or small. With any VRBO property, you’ll find this factor to be as important as the house itself.
I had the privilege of being, I believe, one of the first travelers to stay at Purple Sage House, for a one-month period, at the very beginning of 2014. I have rented houses and apartments all over the world and, as I told the owners, Sarah and Bill, this was by far the best overall accommodation. The VRBO description speaks to the beauty and charm of the house, so I'll only add that it's entirely true. The location is fantastic, in a wonderful residential neighborhood. It's a pleasant 12-minute walk to all the restaurants and shops of South Congress (favorites were Snackbar, Jo's Coffee, Amy's Ice Cream, Hopdoddy's for fantastic burgers, Sunday brunch at Vespaio), where you can also catch a bus to other destinations, if you are without a car (though I'd recommend having one in Austin). Just a couple blocks away is a small greenbelt, nice for jogging and walking, and a little further in another direction you have access to the amazing hike and bike trail that runs for, I think, 14 miles, around Lady Bird Lake. The house itself is light-filled and comfortable. The kitchen has EVERYTHING you could possibly ask for, which was especially important to me as I was staying for a longer period and I like to cook. I'm very noise sensitive, so it was a big relief to discover how quiet the house is. The appliances--stove, washer/dryer, refrigerator--are all top-notch. The TV is huge and has a million channels, if you watch. The place is clean. The front has a tree-swing for sitting. I could go on. Suffice to say, this will be my go-to place when I'm in Austin from now on.
Purple Sage House is located in a tranquil Central Austin historic neighborhood, yet it's just a short walk from the action on SOCO / South Congress, including live music venues, amazing restaurants, boutiques, and much more.
It's also located within a short drive or quick bike ride of downtown Austin (or long walk for the more ambitious guests), including music venues, the Austin Convention Center, etc. At the end of Travis Heights Boulevard guests may access the Lady Bird Lake trail for walking, running, and cycling.
