Put one mark down for the lighthouse and thriving tide pools at the Yaquina Head Natural Area. Here, you can meet protected critters such as sea anemones, goose barnacles, hermit crabs, starfish and sea slugs. The Oregon Coast Aquarium deserves a score as well. Its natural-habitat exhibits feature seabirds, seals, octopus, sea otters and wolf eels. Between these stops, walk down to the pounding surf and breathe in the fresh salt air of the historic Newport waterfront. Close up your file with a soak in the tub back at your resort-located just beyond the beach.

Named for a hollow rock formation shaped like a gigantic punch bowl, this state natural area is a popular whale-watching site. The park features picnic areas, beach access and a hiking trail. 8 mi.


Yaquina Head Lighthouse
Climb the stairs of Oregon's tallest lighthouse. Active since 1873, the lighthouse features 114 stairs and stands 93 feet in height. 1.3 mi.


Newport Historic Bayfront
Constructed in 1866, the Ocean House was Newport's first tourist destination resort. The Bayfront is also sought out by local residents and visitors alike for its fine restaurants, hotels, galleries and shops. 5 mi.
