2 Bedroom Monterey Home Sleeps 6 Comfortably
This beautiful gem has been lovingly cared for by our family for 13 years—and has served as a relaxing retreat all year round. Our goal: to make you feel like it's your home away from home. It's comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated in the French country style—and is the perfect spot to relax or use as a home base for all your Berkshire activities.
It is family-friendly with child gates for the stairs—and plenty of games, toys, books, and movies for your children. No kids? These things are tucked away so you don't need to use them if you don't want! (Also, we use no pesticides on our property—and use only natural cleaning products on our home...so you can feel healthy and safe in our home.)
There are 2 bedrooms upstairs: one master with a king-size bed and one smaller bedroom with a twin bed and pull-out twin bed. There is one downstairs bathroom. An open downstairs floor plan flows from the living room (with a wood-burning stove fired up by plenty of wood we have stored for you), to the kitchen to the dining room.
There's a super comfy pull-out sofa with a queen-size bed in the living room if you need extra space for your family or friends.
Off the dining room is the beautiful screened-in porch where you can sit for hours relaxing and enjoying the breeze and sounds of the Loom Brook from the back of the house. A connected deck allows for easy grilling with the gas grill.
In the summer, our house is just minutes from Lake Garfield, where there's a lake beach perfect for kids and adults alike! A lifeguard is present during the summer months—making it perfect for swimming out to the floating docks (it will bring back camp memories!). You can also canoe and kayak on this lake. We have sand toys, beach umbrellas, and chairs ready for your use. Love to hike? The Appalachian Trail crosses our road, which is perfect for walking any time of the year. We're also situated right near the Beartown State Forest with all its trails. Love to mountain bike? We have one bike available for your use; feel free to bring up your own bikes and ride along our dirt road — or on the nearby trails.
We're also close (about 20 minutes) to blueberry picking and apple picking.
We're 40 minutes from Tanglewood, 45 minutes from Jacob's Pillow, and just 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington with its restaurants, bars, Triplex cinema, and the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.
Fall brings the beautiful splendor of the fall foliage home here; it surrounds the house and everywhere you turn. Go for walks, take in kayaking or canoeing on Lake Garfield, or just take a visit to the nearby Taft Farms for their pumpkins, fresh cider and hot donuts, and corn mazes.
Our home is just 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, which is where our children have learned to ski from age 3. It's the perfect family resort and our home is close enough to put season's passes (or just one-day passes) to good use. You'll love coming home to the warmth of the wood stove and the comfort of our home. We also have snow shoes available for your use.
We are minutes from the town of Monterey, which is small but quaint. The Monterey General Store is gourmet; you can get delicious soups and sandwiches (as well as pies and treats) here, along with staples for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We are also just minutes from the Roadside Cafe, the perfect country diner for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. (There's also Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lee, and Lenox—as well as Pittsfield...which is 45 minutes away...for more delicious restaurants.)
We are about a 25-minute drive from the outlets in Lee, about 30 minutes to Stockbridge (with the quaint and historic Red Lion Inn) and Lenox with the Cranwell Resort & Spa (where you can play golf and have top-notch spa treatments), the Kripalu Yoga Center, and Tanglewood (as well as Canyon Ranch).
Pets are allowed by individual request.
Our goal: to have you fall in love with our home just as much as we love it. We want you to feel this is your Monterey home away from home!

About Valerie Latona
The owners, Valerie and David, bought this home as their city getaway almost 16 years ago. It's since been their home away from home for their family (including their three young children). They fell in love with the Berkshires because of the amazing hiking trails, beautiful lakes, culture, delicious food, and friendly people—all of which are easily accessible from their home.
Valerie Latona purchased this Chalet in 2001
Why Valerie Latona chose Tyringham
We have raised all three of our children in this second home away from home; they've learned to love the country and all the delights of the Berkshires here. While we still come up for them to play at the lake, go hiking, enjoy the fall foliage, and ski at Butternut, we find that we use it less than we ever did (thanks to kids sports and weekend activities), why we decided to share our home with others. Our goal: to give you a chance to love the Berkshires the way we do.
What makes this Chalet unique
While small, our home is extremely comfortable and cozy. You can sit on the couch with your feet up and feel at home. You can go out the front door and walk down the road to clear your mind. But what we love most of all is our screened-in porch, where we sit for hours reading, playing games, and eating our meals. A short or long stay in our home will refresh your batteries and invigorate you.

Home away from home!
My husband and I wanted a cozy little get away for the week and Valerie’s chalet was perfect! It was welcoming and very clean! We felt at home immediately! The furniture is as comfortable as it looks in the pictures. The kitchen was easy to use and had everything we could want. We loved everything about the house and we were sad to leave at the end of the week. Valerie was great! She responded with in min of any requests or questions we had. We will be recommending this chalet to our family and friends!
A beautiful cottage in a very peaceful setting
I was very fortunate to stay in Valerie‘s lovely cottage in the Berkshires this weekend. It was absolutely peaceful and serene. Such a beautiful cottage. The place was extremely clean and comfortable. And it had pretty much everything you would need. I especially loved hearing the stream outside the back screen porch. I highly recommend this cottage for people looking for a beautiful place to stay in the woods.
We are so happy you were able to enjoy the peace and serenity that attracted us to this home so many years ago. Please come back and stay with us again when the leaves are in full bloom!
Lovely owner, beautiful home - very clean, nicely decorated, all the comforts of home and nice extra gratituties.
I hesitate to write a glowing review of this property and the owner only for very selfish reasons. I really can't wait to go back. Clean and cozy in short. The owner went out of her way to make our short stay a great memory and having some fresh snow to wake up to was an added bonus.
Thank you, Steve! We're so happy you had such a great time and we look forward to having you back. We're also happy that Mother Nature cooperated with some fresh snow: there's nothing like waking up to snow, a warm fire in the wood stove, and some fresh, crisp country air. Let us know when you want to come back; you're always welcome!
Cozy chalet that has everything
Just spent MLK weekend here and loved it. The home is lovely. It is fully stocked for anything you need in the kitchen from baking to meat thermometer, to baby spoons! Our thirteen year-olds got a big kick out of playing old VHS tapes - "what is this Mom?!" It was a cold weekend but the wood burning stove was easy to use and kept the house toasty. We had a truly lovely weekend and would recommend this home to everyone. We hope to return!
Great place to cozy up and explore the Berkshires, wonderful home and host
We arrived late and cold over the holidays but immediately felt welcome and at home in this classic cottage. The house is open and warm and for a family of four it’s perfect. The wood stove kept us cozy, even in sub zero temperatures. Our girls had a great time making up their beds on the second floor and loved the decorations in the room. We took a walk out back through the woods and snow down to the creek that had frozen solid in different places. We will definitely make it back to either see the thawed creek when it's warm or when it's snowy and cold again because this is the perfect cottage for a quiet evening, stay inside and bundle up with hot cocoa! Bonus is Valerie’s terrific too—she had everything in order for us, shared a long list of what to do and where to eat and helped make our first Berkshires getaway a success!
We’re thrilled that you had such a wonderful time! Please do come back in the summer, when the stream is gushing, the lake is open for kayaking and swimming, and there are plenty of warm summer breezes to make lounging on the screened-in porch a must! Fall—with its gorgeous foliage, hiking, warm cinnamon doughnuts and hot cider and pumpkin picking—is also a beautiful time. We look forward to having you back!
Screened porch, beautiful hikes nearby, surrounded by state forest and acres of conservation land. We are a mile to the lovely Lake Garfield with sandy beach and delightful swimming. We are 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington, and 40 minutes from Tanglewood and Kripalu Yoga Center.
