2 Private houses with distinctive floor plans which sleeps between 1-18 guests

Big Island Vacation Houses are a lush, tropical oasis located in beautiful North Kohala and offer an immersive Hawaiian experience removed from the tourist traps and bustle of other locales. In fact, it may have you believing you're a local.

A large variety of lush flora envelopes and divides the property, including hibiscus, birds of paradise, orchids, ferns, palms, an awesome banyan tree and fruit trees offering the freshest mangoes, papayas, bananas, and avocados that are yours for the picking. Savor oceanic, pastoral or jungle views as tropical birds sing, geckos chatter, the island breezes caress the trees, and the resonance of the tide rhythmically whispering in the distance.

This private Eden reveals four private houses spread out over 2 acres and presents a variety of accommodations, as each house offers it's own distinctive floor plan. The entire property sleeps 12-14, or if you have a smaller party you can rent just one or more of our rentals that individually sleep between 2-6. Please view our other rental listings at VRBO/215142 (The Banyan House), VRBO/152916 (The Mango House), VRBO/215410 (The Bamboo Suite), and VRBO/452049 (The Bungalow). A few minutes past Kapaau is the colorful town of Hawi, known as North Kohala’s biggest little town. It is home to a weekly farmer’s market that we think is one of the best on the island. Be sure to sample local varieties of popular fruits, like apple bananas, strawberry papaya and in season, super sweet white pineapple! Hawi is also the bicycle turnaround for the annual Ironman World Championship held every October and has a great selection of unique shops and tasty restaurants. The world famous Bamboo Restaurant is consistently voted one of the best restaurants on the island with a great lineup of live music featuring award winning Hawaiian musicians. There are also wonderful alternative healing practices located here, with massage therapists , acupuncture specialists, naturopaths, herbalists, and a variety of yoga styles represented.

North Kohala is perfectly located to take advantage of many fun activities including scenic coastal rides on horseback or ATVs, the Kohala Zipline, Kayaking the Kohala Ditch and hiking trails galore. Head up the mountain road to Waimea and experience one of the best scenic drives in the US, with incredible views of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and its observatories and a birds eye view of South Kohala with all its resorts and white sand beaches. The beaches in Kohala are the best on the island, including world famous Hapuna beach (Conde Nast rated it one of the top 10 beaches in the world), scenic Mauna Kea Beach, child friendly Spencer Beach Park and local favorite Beach 69.

Head down the coast towards South Kohala and you’ll discover many historical sites and parks along the coastline to enjoy. Lapakahi State Park is the site of an ancient fishing village and a great spot for whale watching. The harbor town of Kawaihae is home to a variety of tour companies offering scuba, snorkeling and whale watching tours. There’s also a nice selection of shops and galleries along with great dinning and music at the Blue Dolphin Restaurant or popular Café Pesto.

Beautifully built homes in a lush and welcoming environment.

  • 5 of 5

These properties are a rare find. Craftsmanship is evident in all the homes, especially in the incredible woodwork.

-very clean

-well equipped

-quiet and private

-close to spectacular views

-reasonably priced

-spacious with great common areas

-huge lanais

-fantastic open air showers

-the best kitchens I've seen in a rental property

-the (very friendly) host lives on the east coast of the States so communication can be slow. It would be easier to deal directly with the excellent staff on the island

-it can be hot during the day and there were some holes in the screens which made bug - free ventilation tricky. Staff are already working on fixing this however, so don't let it stop you

-the bungalow unit is comfortable and private, but not quite at the same standard as the other units, and you have to go outside to use the adjacent bathroom building . That said, we still loved our stay there

If you are looking for a quiet family escape or something similar, this is the place.

Jungle Solitude

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was amazing! My family of 18 including nieces and nephews ranging from 6 months to 18 were accommodated quite easily. I didn't hear one complaint from anybody the entire stay. The property is a good click away from any of the sandy beaches but the location and solitude more than made up for that. It was super quiet and easy to find. The beds were very comfortable. Ample sheets and towels. The snorkeling gear and boogie boards were a hit. I would highly recommend this place for anybody looking for a large group stay on the Big Island. In fact, I'd love to go back.

Phillip Family

Great location-great accommodation's. Weather was very hot which made inside uncomfortable , I know you can't control the weather but maybe some AC in units would help. Our TV never did work even after requesting help on cable. Dryer was making awful noise. Overall, our family did enjoy out time but because of the weather it wasn't very comfortable inside. lots of cold showers trying to stay cool.

Owner's Response: Hi Phillip Family, I'm sorry your stay wasn't what you expected. We struggle to maintain or satellite TV and Internet in the jungle due to its remote location. We have had some trouble and are looking into the possibility of smart TVs and eliminating cable, or switching systems. Regarding the weather and the fans, having lived there all year round we have generally found the fans more than sufficient in the summer as usually the temperature drops to a comfortable level at night. That said, I understand it was an exceptionally hot week and we apologize the fans weren't able to cool the units down better. The dryer was repaired after your stay as well. We appreciate the feedback and information you gave on your stay. We always try to make our guests' visits as comfortable as possible, so if there is ever anything you need please don't hesitate to contact us during your stay so we can better try to remedy any issues. We hope to see you back at our property in the future!

Amazing property, Unforgettable experience!

  • 5 of 5

Our family was fortunate enough to stay at the Banyan House for a week in August 2014. Mark was such a gracious host, and was more than accommodating. Although he was not on the island at the time of our visit, we felt his presence everywhere. There’s a lot of love and care that has gone into this special place, and you can feel it the more time you spend here, and you are able to really sink into island life and connect back to yourself. We had heard about the property for many years, but were completely blown away by actually being there, and experiencing the tranquility and peace that this land has to offer.

We had the unique experience of arriving the day before the big hurricane hit, and Mark went above and beyond to provide a safe haven for us. Mark checked up on us during the storm, and his brother Mike, the caretaker and home builder, came over with food for us, candles and a generator to make sure we were safe and well cared for. What was potentially a scary situation became a beautiful memory, and one in which we will never forget.

Once the hurricane had passed (the house was solid--we were in no danger!), we experienced a truly relaxing time, here at this gorgeous home, with plenty of space, lush gardens filled with tropical treasures, and the kind of peace that is hard to find in the world. We were in our own paradise--and it was such a gift to us to be able to experience island life with our daughters, away from the tourists and crowds. The gorgeous beaches were an enjoyable drive away, and so were the waterfall hike and little local town, filled with vegan food, delicious sushi, and yummy ice cream and coffee.

Whenever we've gone to Hawaii in the past, we've stayed on Maui at a condo on the beach. When we come in the future, we will be staying on the big island, up in the Highlands at the Banyan House. We absolutely loved being tucked away and living like locals! This property is perfectly set up for a group stay, and on the other hand, how private it can be if there are others staying in the separate living spaces. It offers the best of both worlds.

Thank you Mark and Mike for a truly beautiful experience. We hope to visit your gorgeous piece of paradise again soon!

With much gratitude, Susan, Bo, Anna and Olivia

The perfect setting for a walk with God.

  • 5 of 5

We did indeed have a retreat! It was calm and beautiful - just what you need for a weekend exploration with God and your walk with Him. We prayed, sang and ate. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay here. The resident nightingale was the topper to the weekend. We are all locals, all live nearby or on other islands so this hidden away house was a surprise and a blessing. Thanks again.

The ONLY Way to Experience Hawaii !!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family could not be more impressed with this retreat! We wanted to get away, relax and experience Hawaii like the locals. The houses sit in a rainforest like atmosphere and have the closeness and sometimes very needed private space so the whole extended family or friends enjoy the retreat.

We spend most of our time on the back porches that overlook a spectacular banyan tree and water views. The inside contains everything you need to make it home away from home including: grills, hair dryers, beach chairs, and working wifi!

If you want to explore village life you are just down the street from two famous villages in North Kohala. There is a local beach within walking distance and of course easy access to the public beaches located on Hwy 19. Hwy 230 is around the corner to take you to the breathtaking waterfalls of Waipio.

We have all ages staying together and there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We will definitely be back to this retreat and I know you will treasure your time here as well.

A big thanks to the housekeeping service and maintainence staff....impeccable.

The Big Island's North Kohala district is the discriminating travelers' best-kept secret. Experience 'Old Hawaii' in the charming historic towns of Hawi and Kapaau, with artists' shops, galleries, and delightful cafes. Historic sites - the famous statue of King Kamehameha, state parks, tropical gardens, Pololu Valley - with its majestic views, black sand beach, and scenic hiking trails. Or kick back, and enjoy some of the island's best beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but the sea turtle sightings occur year-round.
