Chattooga Lake retreat & nature-lovers paradise

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,100 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Your outdoor opportunities are endless from your comfy and cozy 2 bedroom 1 bath cottage on the upcountry's most quiet and secluded lake. Relax to the sounds of frogs and whippoorwills at night, explore and fish the lake with the included Jon boat, swim or float or hike around the lake or to the many nearby waterfalls or on the extensive Foothills trail system.

The property has a large level lot with great lake access for wading, fishing, or just sitting around enjoying the scenery. There is a fire pit and gentle off-shore breezes are almost a certainty in the evenings to make having a small fire while listening to the surrounding nature one of the highlights of your trip.

While the home has plenty of room for larger groups, we prefer to limit guests to 4 total to maintain and respect the peacefulness of the lake and surroundings. This property is not intended for those who wish to party or have many guests visiting but rather for small families or couples who wish to spend some quality time together and reconnect with each other and nature. While the cabin is all about relaxing and unplugging, we regrettably offer satellite TV and wireless internet access because for some it is a necessity but avoiding these modern-day trappings is highly recommended to maximize your experience. Cell phones will not work around the lake or in the immediate area.

The lake and property are located in the northern-most tip of South Carolina in the 'town' of Mountain Rest just a couple miles from the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River, one of only seven US rivers to have this designation and made famous in the movie 'Deliverance'. What makes this area so unique is the fact that it is mostly undiscovered, devoid of traffic or stress, and known only to locals yet offers more outdoor activities and unspoiled nature than any of the more famous nearby vacation destinations. The cabin and lake alone would be enough to keep many occupied and satisfied but within 15 minute drive from the lake are enough trails, waterfalls and river access points to keep one busy for an entire summer; within less than hour are the quaint towns of Cashiers and Highlands NC and Clayton Georgia. Within 2 hours are Asheville NC, Pisgah and Smoky mountain National parks.

perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the lake house for a week with our 2 young boys (age 5 and 3) and had an amazing time without ever even leaving the property! (Except a mid-week trip to Ingles in Walhalla, which was a great grocery store.) Everything was absolutely perfect and exactly what we wanted/needed. The backyard was fantastic. We really appreciated having a large, flat backyard which gave the boys a lot of room to run around and play and made it easy to walk down to the lake. We loved using the hammocks and hanging out on the dock dock and watching the ducks and the fish. We took the kayaks out a few times and it was pretty easy to kayak around the whole perimeter of the lake in about an hour or so. And it was so beautiful and peaceful! There were a few other families there, but we largely felt like we had the place to ourselves! The house was so comfortable and had everything we needed. Plenty of sheets and towels and games! We also loved the screened in porch and the swing. We can't say enough good things about this place. We felt transported and time seemed to stand still and it was so relaxing! We highly recommend this place and hope to come back again and again!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a nice review. We've had so many guests write great reviews and this one in particular captures the uniqueness of our property and its location. It is truly rewarding to have to have such nice guests merge perfectly into and appreciate its simplicity, modesty and ideal setting. Thanks again for staying.

Relaxing, quiet, simple, wonderful. Exactly what we wanted.

My husband, 13yo son and I spent four nights here where life slowed down in a way we rarely experience. We were out in Mike's Jon boat and especially enjoyed his kayaks out on this private, lovely lake. My son fished endlessly-- Mike responded quickly to my email asking for fishing secrets. It read like a foreign language to me but my son speaks "fishing" and he loved the inside information. There was firewood available for a fire, the house was clean and had everything we needed.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The are not enough adjectives to describe the beauty of the area surrounding the cabin. In the middle of Sumter National Forest, each turn in the road brings another magnificent view of nature at its best. The cabin provides everything needed for whatever kind of vacation you are looking for. The kitchen has everything a cook needs for preparing a hardy meal after a day of exploring the area. Nearby Highlands has plenty of shopping; clothing, art, furniture etc. and many fine restaurants. This trip was just what the doctor ordered.

Perfect Lake Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We just had the best lake vacation here! The house was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed inside and out. The property was like a park and the ability to walk out the back door and have such great lake access was a dream. The water was clean and warm and perfect for swimming, floating and kayaking. During our stay there were no other people on the water-it was like we had out own private lake, and I loved that we didn't have to contend with motorboats. It was just peaceful and beautiful. On the one day that it was cloudy we hiked Yellow Branch Falls and enjoyed that immensely. The homeowner, Mike, was a dream to work with and he was extremely patient with my questions. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay. On the down side, it is a bit of a drive to get to a grocery store and we did have a close encounter with a rude neighbor but these were very small issues in an otherwise fabulous experience. I am already hoping to go back next year!
