About the property

3Br (+Loft), 2ba, Easily Sleeps 9, Spacious, Quiet & Comfy

This house is in Glacier, WA, which is about as close as you can stay to Mt. Baker without a tent. You can hear the Nooksack River out the window, walk through the woods and pick mushrooms and then go for a hike out your back door. Or, go ski the deepest snowpack in North America - it's up to you!

We have a great kitchen, record player with plenty of retro vinyl, a guitar and banjo. This place is quiet and suited for relaxing in one of the many recliners.

Chair9 is an easy walk for those looking for some live music and to meet new friends. You can also get internet there for those that need to check in with the real world.

In the summer, Church Mountain is in your backyard. The alpine meadow up there will make you feel as if you're in the middle of the swiss alps. It's one of my favorite hikes in the Pacific Northwest. You'll see more wildlife in 2 hours than you will elsewhere all summer.

About Zak Menkel

The four of us had been coming up here for years as renters to enjoy the peace, fresh air and DEEP snow that Baker has to offer. We finally decided to make a little slice of it our own. Knowing what we appreciate in a Baker cabin, we tried to create a fun, functional, comfortable place for our guests to enjoy.

Zak Menkel purchased this house in 2011

Why Zak Menkel chose Northwest & Islands

Baker is truly the antidote to the mega-resort-craziness that seems to be the trend lately. We knew we wanted to be in the Snowline community (good people, great amenities, perfect location). Not to be cliche, but we all loved this place the second we walked int the door. It's got all the space and modern comforts you could want, but still holds onto its woodsy, cabin-y charm. Plus, how can you not want to doze in front of that amazing wood stove?

What makes this house unique

You can hear the Nooksack flowing as you fall asleep, and you'll wake up to a view of Church Mtn. It's quiet and well off the road, with hiking trails out the back door. Pool and tennis courts are 5 minutes away. Modern kitchen with pass-thru counter to the dining area, overstuffed couches and chairs by the fireplace, separate living room upstairs with TV/DVD.

Comfortable and homey with everything we need

  • 5 of 5

The owner was responsive and provided much useful information prior to our stay. My group arrived on a Friday right before sundown after some 2+ hours of driving and found the place easy to settle in with all the essentials we needed. The location was also close to most hiking spots we wanted to hit. Picture Lake, Artist Ridge were about 40 minutes away and Heliotrope Ridge, a fantastic scenic hike which the owner recommended, was about 30 minutes away. The house was pretty quiet at night and things like audio system, grill, firepit were all easy to use. There was definitely no cell signal but wifi was steady. Recommend bringing mosquito repellent when the weather is warmer! Overall it was a great cozy place we highly recommend!

Fantastic Location for Mountain Adventures

  • 4 of 5

This lovely cabin is located very near Mt. Baker, east of Glacier WA in the Snowline gated community. The community is a collection of unique mountain homes secluded in the tall pines along the Nooksack river. You know that you are close to nature when there's a Grizzly Bear safety instruction sign posted on the neighborhood street at the entrance of a hiking trail down to the river. This Mt. Baker cabin came fully-furnished with everything needed for a great mountain getaway, including some staples in the kitchen that the owner leaves for guests with a request that they be replenished, as needed. This is the owners' second home and you can really tell that he spends time there - from the extensive LP record collection you are free to use, to the well-stocked linen closet. While there is no cellular phone service, the owner provides DSL WIFI that is more than adequate for communicating with the outside world. There are a couple of fun restaurants nearby but the closest grocery store is about 10 miles away in Glacier. The cabin has several bedrooms (we did not try to count the number of beds) and can accommodate quite a large number of guests, including pets. We were there over the fourth of July holiday and took advantage of the Snowline community heated outdoor pool, tennis court, pickle ball court, athletic fields, and community center. This is a great family-vacation setting. The cabin does appear to be older and has suffered some age-related deterioration as a result of harsh weather conditions, but nothing that prevented us from enjoying this fantastic setting near Mt. Baker. The owner is responsive to e-mails and provides a great list of suggestions designed to increase the fun-factor of your stay.

Nice cozy cabin in a great little community tucked away in the mountains. Excellent location for year-round activities. Kudos to the owners on their awesome 60s/70s era record collection! ;-)

CREATIVE RETREAT

  • 5 of 5

We just finished our first trip (not our last) to the great cabin at Mt. Baker in Snowline. Working with the owners was great and we had everything we could have possibly needed and more. We took our family for a no-connectiveity (to the outside world) creative retreat and we could not have picked a better place. The cabin, while not huge, had a spot for everyone to tuck away and enjoy their quite space for creating. Plus it has a large round dining table that we could all comfortably (six--table has seven chairs) come together, share our creativity, play games and break bread. While the cabin is perfect for a quite creative retreat, the property of Snowline offers a quick trail to the Nooksack River, ample hiking, a pool, tennis courts, volley ball and a small fishing pond. Or take the dogs for a walk around the community and be and look at some of the other properties in the neighborhood. Although in a community, it is very private, and quite, without feeling like you are not able to enjoy yourself. In fact, that is the best thing about this space--you can just be. Not too fancy, and certainly not run down, it is simply a comfy home and we hope for our family, it will be a home away from home for many years to come.

Need a break...want to fall asleep to the sounds of the river, want to explore some of the most beautiful forest--stay here. Also an added bonus--Silver Lake is a short drive away that made a very hot Saturday, really fun.

Thanks for the hospitality and sharing your home Zak--we'll be back!
