Serra de Sintra:: Tourist information: Known in ancient times as Mons Lunae (the Hills of the Moon), because of its strong traditions of astral cults, still clearly visible in the region's countless monuments and archaeological remains, the Serra de Sintra is a granite outcrop roughly 10 km long, rising abruptly between a vast plain to the north and the estuary of the River Tagus to the south. It is a mountain range that twists and turns, projecting into the Atlantic Ocean to form Cabo da Roca - the headland that marks the westernmost point of' continental Europe. The Serra de Sintra today contains a fabulous collection of monuments from a whole host of different epochs, ranging from prehistoric times to the present day. Thanks to its unique microclimate, Sintra has some of the most beautiful parks in Portugal, planted in keeping with a certain romantic taste, as well as a dense and verdant natural vegetation, affording the region an air of great majesty amidst the splash of different greens.

About Dagmar Hedrich
I am German and live in since more than 16 years Portugal with my family. I absolutely love Sintra, and when in 2005 an opportunity arose to buy and a house there, we renovated it for our own use during weekends, and for family visits. In 2009, we decided to rent it out to holiday makers.
Dagmar Hedrich purchased this Apartment in 2005
Why Dagmar Hedrich chose Santa Maria e São Miguel
Sintra is an excellent place to be in short distance to sandy beaches and breathtaking cliffs - and at the same time within easy reach from Lisbon.
What makes this Apartment unique
Our house is one of the 'chalets' which were built around the turn of the century, when the railway line from Lisbon as built. The small town, which had hitherto been reserved to the Portuguese royal family and nobility as summer residence, then became popular among wealthy Portuguese. Besides the large country estates, smaller 'Chalets' for bourgeoisie and the artists were built. Our Villa was designed and built for José Ricardo, an actor and theatre director, who lived here until 1925. When we converted the house into a modern apartment, we tried tho maintain special atmosphere which we had felt at our very first visit.

A great house
We spent 4 days here with family. The house is very clean, updated and spacious. Great location close to market and restaurants.
Hosts were very helpful and always available to answer questions.
My son specially loved the library of DVD selections.
Perfect holiday home.
We are traveling with our daughter and her family. The house was superbly well equipped for both adults and children, and all had their private areas. Our host was welcoming and helpful. The location is quiet yet close to the sites. We can enthusiastically recommend this home for anyone.
Beautiful Appartment / Great Hosts
Just had a great experience recently in Sintra staying in this lovely apartment. The hosts were great! Very accommodating even with our small child and quick to respond if there were any issues. Location was also perfect. Some technical difficulties that I am sure the hosts will fix and overall the place was a bit dusty for those with allergies but overall very minor issues. We would definitely return.
Dagmar's home in Sintra is as magical as Sintra itself. The home is equipped with just about anything you could need to make your stay feel just like home. It's bright, the bedrooms are large, and the kitchen is fabulous (and wonderfully stocked). While we didn't eat in, it would have been a lot of fun to cook there. Location is a very short distance to the local market and close enough to Sintra's historic center without being directly on top of it (Iwhich was perfect for us). A big plus is the fact that Dagmar is incredibly responsive, so any questions are answered quickly. We couldn't have found a better location, house, and host for our stay in Sintra. THANK YOU, DAGMAR!!
Dear Lisa, you and your family have been fantastic guests - I am glad you enjoyed the stay and it was very nice to have you. I can recommend you 100% to other hosts - Thank you!

The cultural landscape of Sintra, which developed in the 19th century into the centre of European romantic architecture, is listed as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1995. Besides the fairytale castle 'Palacio da Pena', which is one of the main romantic ensembles in Europe and was built by King Fernando II (Ferdinand von Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha), the National Palace and the Moorish castle are worth a visit. There are several gardens and parks with the lush vegetation that is so typical for Sintra - and unique in the World. Due to its location, Sintra allows you to combine culturally stimulating holidays with peaceful village life, beach holidays, golf, surf or hiking. Other Activities: Photographic excursions guided by professional photographer Golf: Sintra is proud to have some of the best golf courses in Portugal. Set against amazing landscapes, there are several courses in easy reach: Estoril (18 & 9 hole courses), Quinta da Beloura (18 holes), Penha Longa (18 / 9); Quinta de Marinha (18 holes). Due to Sintra's mild micro-climate, golf can be played all year round. From the website goingforgolf.com: 'The Lisbon Golf Coast has no fewer than 19 full courses laid out to the south of the city across the River Tagus (Costa Azul), to the west (Estoril Coast) and to the north-west (Silver Coast). The vast majority of layouts are within a 45-minute radius of Lisbon airport and overlook, or are close to, the wonderful coastline this area boasts.'
