About the property

Sleep 4 in two bedrooms - 1 double and bunk beds

2 bedroom, secluded wooden lodge that sleeps 4/5 with stunning views to all sides and the use of a shared pool and barbecue. The lodge has heating & air-conditioning.

Surrounded by cork forest, vineyard and beautiful hills you can wake to the sound of birds, you are only a short drive to shops and local amenities and within 2hrs of Lisbon or Spain 1 hour drive.

The Cork Lodge is ideally suited to writers, nature lovers, bird watchers, star gazers, romantics and those seeking tranquility and simplicity with modern conveniences fitted, and yet within walking distance of main farm house or pool . Feel free to roam the farm tracks or ask for a guided farm tour in our truck.

There are a myriad of activities to enjoy on the farm. For the walkers or mountain bikers there are kilometers of footpaths around the 540 hectare farm for you to explore and for those wishing to venture further afield, the nearby peaks offer unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside. Serra d’Ossa lies at 500 metres above sea level and boasting one of the driest climates in Europe. The absence of light pollution makes this an astronomers’ paradise.

Bird watchers can enjoy seeking out over 70 species of birds in the unique habitat provided by the cork forest, several of our past guests are members of the RSPB and have made lists of the birds they have seen / heard. Here is a list of a few: White Stork, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Hoopoe, Red-Rumped Swallow, Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Bee Eater. Visitors to the local damn include black winged stilts and the occasional avocet. Very occasionally, bustards can be seen in the lower plains.

Within a one-hour drive from the farm, you can also explore nearby towns including Evora (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Estremoz famed for its Saturday morning market, Vila Viçosa with its two royal palaces, Reguengos and even neighbouring Spain.

Vineyards : While predominantly a hilly cork forest , a vineyard has recently been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nactional and Syrah quality grapes. Most of the grapes are sold; however a selection of the best quality grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the Het Tientje name. This wine has been awarded silver medals in Wine Masters Challenge (Portugal), Mundus Vini (Germany), and Challenge Du Vin (France). Next year a white wine will also be produced from viognier grapes.

The Cabin is well is small but very comfortable and had all you need.

If you stay here you must do the Cork Tour. It's a two hours Jeep with a guide who will give you the full insight into the cork World.

We were recommended to come and stay at Herdade da Maroteira by some friends, who had really enjoyed there stay. All we can say is that we wish we had a few more days or weeks.

Very cool location

  • 5 of 5

Unfortunately we were only there for one night and arrived late. As we saw in the morning, though, the property is very cool. Cork trees everywhere and 3 friendly dogs came to hang out. The little house was everything we needed for our one night for 2 adults, a toddler and a baby (who just slept in bed with us). Had I been a better planner I should have lined up a tour of the cork forest and farm. Our days just seemed to get away from us on this vacation!

A great get away from it all location

  • 4 of 5

We thought the location was delightful, very peaceful and it was great to have access to a swimming pool albeit 800m away from the lodge. The Lodge itself was very small, little work space in the kitchen and few cooking utensils, in need of an update however the location and outside space made up for this. Recommend the Cork Trekking as a great way to see the area and also the megalith tour with Mario in Evora. The Lodge is approx. 2kms off the highway along an unmade road. The staff are lovely and helpful and you must try the wines produced here.

Relaxing and Refreshing Holiday in Beautiful Surrounds

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks in March 2016 and were delighted with the farm and its inhabitants, both two-legged and four-legged. It's a beautiful property as described on the website. We loved being surrounded by the soft sounds of the goat bells and seeing the new born lambs. Our hosts, Phillip and Marguerite are friendly, approachable and available. We also met Maroteira's resident guide and enjoyed an excellent 5km walk in the cork woodlands with him. We found the cabin accommodation good, a little small for two weeks and fairly rustic but clean and all more or less as described. Excellent tourist information had been left in the cabin for us and this was most helpful. Best of all, some wines from the estate left in a basket for us to choose , should we wish. We tried two reds and a rose and like them all. The farm's friendly dogs added to our enjoyment; they were frequent visitors but not a nuisance. We found plenty to do within driving distance of the farm and even ventured twice into Spain, to Merida and Caceres. The nearest attraction, the Convento Sao Paulo, was a revelation and if not for its recommendation by our farm guide we would have missed it. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anybody - it's a lovely place for a holiday and we left feeling relaxed and refreshed, much more knowledgeable about cork farming and privileged to have had this experience.
