Why Shaz Mclean chose Mission Beach
I have wanted this cottage from first sight. It had such 'lovely bones' and I was fortunate enough to be able to demo and then nurture into the most adorable place. It is located next door to our other vacation rental VRBO # 379170. Please refer to this listing for reviews as to my work and business ethic.
What makes this Cottage unique
Restored beautiful old wooden floors add to the charm of the cottage.

Lovely little place, well situated on Mission Blvd.
Very cute home, extremely comfortable. A few steps from the Bay and the ocean. Close to everything. Lovely kitchen, sufficiently equipped for light cooking. If you like character, this is the one!
Ready to relax and enjoy!
Loved the experience! Location was awesome, really gave us a sense of beach community life. Cottage was cute and comfortable, as advertised. Lots of good restaurants to enjoy in the area. We took full advantage of the private deck for breakfasts and dinners. Very relaxing atmosphere! Enjoyed using the bikes to cruise on the boardwalk and inner harbour. Recommend this rental to anyone looking to kick back and relax!
Perfect location & perfect size
We (family of 5) were in San Diego for a wedding at the Catamaran the week between Christmas and New Years. We had plenty of space, the kitchen was very functional with plenty of room for groceries. The closets were well stocked with hangers and there was plenty of space for clothes/shoes. Being so close to the bay walk and the beach walk was ideal. Great coffee down the street and within walking distance of everything Pacific Beach had to offer. The cottage had plenty of towels, including beach towels, and the real bonus was the paddle boards and the bikes in the storage unit. We loved it!
Amazing cottage for friends or family!
Adorable cottage which has been stunningly remodeled and in a great location for the beach and bay. Perfect for a family or couples. Walking distance to many restaurants and stores and we enjoyed having bikes available. The private patio was the best because it kept our kids contained without worry. Shaz left a booklet of super helpful information too. We've already let some friends know about this place too! It was awesome!
Nice Cottage! Really enjoyed our stay!
Wonderfully updated. Enjoyed our stay!
I am not inclined to write reviews of any kind however this experience was very uncomfortable and disappointing. The description and pictures were misleading and we found the cottage to be unacceptable.
The cottage upon arrival was damp and cool to find no heat except a gas stove which we were unable to start. We found space heaters which helped temporarily but certainly not something we were anticipating to use. The house and “amenities” were tired. The coffee pot had a small amount of liquid in it which seemed like old coffee. The teapot was filled with dirty water which we emptied to refresh, but found the teapot interior was rusty and unusable.
The street traffic noise was very loud inside the cottage, it was unsettling and uncomfortable; making it difficult to relax, especially when large vehicle or trucks passed by the cottage would rumble. We could not sleep in the front bedroom with all the commotion and disturbance from the road. This was an impact on the quality of a relaxing vacation. The owner should have included this factor in the description. The picture of the outside grill was a new shinny grill but on property was a rusty dirty stainless steel one. The most concerning situation, which caused us to vacate the cottage after one night rather than the three we booked, was the bathroom. The sanitary condition of the shower/tub was absolutely disgusting. Decorative panels were used in place of a shower curtain. The panels which were not appropriate for usage, other than decorative, which sat in the bath tub where they got wet. The condition of the panels were dirty and moldy with mold build up in different sections of the panel. The shower/tub picture was not shown in the collection of pictures of the cottage which now we know why. In our opinion the bathroom was a health concern enough for us to vacate. I would not wish anyone to have to use such an inexcusable bathroom while on what they intend to be a relaxing vacation.
Parking was also misleading, on street parking to be expected, garage parking effectively unaccessible as you need to be able to climb over the seats to exit the vehicle once in the garage or leave the vehicle half way out therefore not being able to close garage door, leaving contents of garage at risk.
I am so sorry to hear that you had a disappointing stay at the cottage. I manage the property for Shaz and will do my best to respond to each point you made: First I want thank you for bringing to my attention that the tea pot and grill are in need of service. I will check on both of those items and replace if needed. Beyond that, your allegations are mainly unfounded. To start, the pictures in our VRBO listing are exactly what you get. If you read my other reviews, other guests say the exact opposite of what you did. Second - You arrived on a winter night. The cottage will be cold upon arrival. Once the gas stove is heated up (directions in the information booklet) and the two space heaters are in the bedrooms, it is very nice. All of the older and many of the newer cottages in the beach do not have central heating. Third - The coffee machine is new. I personally replaced it last month. Fourth, the street noise is not that bad. The cottage is located on Mission Blvd, but there are very few trucks and large vehicles that pass through. Fifth, The garage. Shaz clearly notes that the garage is for a smaller vehicle. It is an older cottage that was remodeled, so it keeps the original dimensions, which are smaller than what most people are used to. Again, this is the same situation at most cottages in the Mission Beach area. There is also free street parking nearby that you can use if your vehicle is too large. Also, we know that the garage door is a bit of a pain, so we are having it replaced this week. Lastly, the bathroom. There is a picture of the bathroom on the listing and it looks exactly as pictured. I will suggest to the owner to maybe get different shower curtains, but they were definitely not moldy as you suggest. There is 100% no health concern or risk in the bathroom. That is just silly.
