About Dan Roton
While visiting Kauai in 1999 to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we said, 'Wouldn't it be great if someday, when we retire, we could live half of the time in Hawaii, and the other half on the coast of California?' That set the plan into motion. After 20+ visits to the 4 largest islands, it became obvious that Kauai was our favorite. When I retired, after teaching high school business for 32 years, we started to move forward with the plan. Having already purchase a weekend home on the coast of our home state, we searched for, and purchased the right property on Kauai. When my wife retired, after a long and fulfilling career as a community college academic counselor, we accomplished our dream! We want to share the beauty of our Poipu Retreat with you. We live here half-time, and we hope to allow people a glimpse of Paradise from Kauai during the other half of the year. Dan and Marlese Roton

Why Dan Roton chose Poipu
My wife loves the ocean! She can sit and watch the sea and listen to the waves for hours. The sound of the surf lulls us both to sleep at night. We've stayed at 5-star, large resorts that had all the amenities right on site. They are good in their own way, but they were too busy, noisy, and chaotic for us--especially now that we are living here half-time. Who wants to listen to the distant strains of a lounge singer, or piped music all day, every day? We love the sounds of our grandkids' laughter, but the giggles and screams of a few dozen other kids splashing in a humongous pool complex can wear on you after a few days. We chose The Makahuena because it's a small, quiet, friendly complex, with a good mix of permanent residents, part-timers, long-term renters, and vacationing families and couples. There are always interesting people to meet from all over the world. Or we can take a dip in the pool or spa, both of which are rarely crowded. We love to watch the sunset together. At this spot, on the southernmost point on Kauai, we get the bonus of watching sunrises, too. We always look forward to watching the magnificent displays of spinner dolphins and breaching whales in the winter at Makahuena Point.
What makes this Condo unique
We have stayed in some condos that were air conditioned--and they needed it! The tropical sun can heat up a place in a hurry! But who wants to stay in an air conditioned place in Paradise--masking the sounds of the surf, the fragrance of the flowers, and the cooing of the doves? The first time we visited our condo with the real estate agent, we stayed for six hours, late into the afternoon. With only the trade winds for cooling, we were totally comfortable. Since we purchased, we've completed several half-year stays with the same impression. This IS the coolest condo in the complex. We chose this particular condo at The Makahuena because it was cool, private, tastefully decorated, and had a minimum of stairs to reach the front door. (Because of the topography of the property, there are a total of 15 stair steps between the parking lot and the front door.) This unit was also just a few steps from Makahuena Point. The walk-in closet is large enough to hold all the toys we, or our guests, will need to enjoy the island. Many of the toys were already here when we purchased, and we've added even more. Where else can you stay that supplies all the things you might need for enjoying the beach, the tennis court, the pool, and the golf course? Who else provides four sets of golf clubs and a couple of hundred golf balls? Since we purchased in the fall of 2013, we've enjoyed making this condo our own. We've remodeled both baths and the kitchen, and we've made quite a few decorating changes that we're sure you'll appreciate. Because we're so close to the crashing waves, the frames of the sliding glass doors have become weathered. We've just replaced the largest sliding glass doors (14 ft. x 8 ft.) in the living room, and we'll be replacing the others in the living room and the master bedroom in the next couple of year. We look forward to sharing the Poipu Retreat with you.
